YES

in fact 99% of the time I wish it was just fucking subtitles like the fucking NES super nintendo and genesis master system and they would shut the fuck up with the talking and not say a damn thing ever.

All the time, mostly because I'm always doing something else while I'm playing.

For games, yeah. I also adjust sound settings so that Music, Ambient, Sound Effects and U.I. are low; and max out the Dialogue.

For movies though, always OFF.

I never used to but somewhere over the last few years of this generation I've started to always turn them on.

Now one of the first things I do when I start playing a new game is to go into options and turn subtitles on without playing any of the game to see if I need them or not.

Nope. If they're on, I'm looking too much at the subtitles than at the actual picture and I think it takes away a lot from the experience which becomes way less immersive. And I think it's questionable when people are so impatient that they are not willing to listen to dialogue, especially when they're playing games "professionally" (for example, Jeff).

It's almost as bad as skipping cutscenes on the first playthrough of a game.

I do the opposite, music volume is too low in most games and I always turn it up. It often greatly enhances the atmosphere.
