This is like the sixth time I've written this, and am using the old post editor as of now.

Japanese RPG's tend to have exaggerated scenes that should have been toned down quite a bit. Take Lost Odyssey, for instance. This scene goes really silly at the six minute mark. I had to really fight my emotions not to cry, but my eyes still got watery.

!!! SPOILER !!! - The spoiler button won't work at all on the old post editor and was destroying my post in the new one, as was the code button.

Now that I think about it... Not really, no. I think I even enjoy depressing game worlds.

Demon's Souls is pretty much the epitome of bleak.

The wasteland in Fallout 3

@Ghost_Cat: After reading that, Fallout 3 will feel like post apocalyptic written by babies. That book is so good I wish more games would take cues from it

The whole Silent Hill 2.

I played once through this game, but I just can bring myself to do it again. I guess the game succeeded.

Yeah, the game was pretty depressing, but also strangely beautiful.

I love SH2! I remember playing through 5 times to get all the endings.

@afrofools: Sure that moment was really sad, almost made me cry, on the other hand those short stories that you find around the world did make me cry, but the thing that breaks that for me, as it does with most RPG's is that they have revival spells/potions, just use that for fuck's sake. I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking this

On topic no, If a game world is depressing then I want to play it even more because that means it's well made like the worlds of Fallout, Rapture, or Gears of War to a lesser extent and some others

Seeing how many answers are related to Fallout 3, I can't help but think that games still are poor. Fallout 3? It was full of humor, and the world was not-all-that-serious. It wasn't depressing at all.

I remember playing Planescape Torment, main character was a pretty sad bro.

Spend a day or two reading The Road, and Fallout 3 will feel like Disney World.
