How popular/known/ubiquitous is Giant Bomb outside of this site proper?  I know the big 3 are IGN, Gamespot, and Kotaku.  Is this site discussed among those forums or anything?  I just want to know how people who haven't been following these people forever view this site...quirky?  Just a site with weird video content?  A totally weird community?

Talk to me!  I need to know this!!

Not really, but I'm just curious about the innermost workings of the female psyche...

*edit*
Alright, yea, I know there are other gaming websites out there...Gametrailers, Destructoid, 1up, and Joystiq being a few of the big names I've left out.

  • Gametrailers - it's got some pretty sick video content if you're looking for perspectives from other game press, but their host can get a bit annoying . . . I really love their retrospecitves though.  History Channel quality. Try to make it a point to check your favorite series out if you've got some time.
  • Destructoid - I know there's been some love from the staff on Destructoid, but I could never really keep on going back to the site...Maybe just a little bit too much personality?
  • 1up - Don't really know much about this place.  They've got the occasional nifty feature, and I hear their podcasts are poppin, and they've got a decent community - can't say too much besides that.
  • Joystiq - My personal gaming blog of choice.  Yea, their news may not be up to the minute fresh, but they actually put some thought and effort behind their posts.  Madprops Joystiq.
  • Gamespot, IGN - I don't really visit these sites at all.  They're just too corporate for me, covering every single game, 6 page reviews, stiff articles, etc.  Although its fun to watch some vid reviews from the old crew at GS.
  • Kotaku - These guys...Yes, they'll put out 4 articles an hour, and one of those will be a rumor, or not really pertaining to games really.  They're cool to visit if you know how to filter your news properly.

This would be better posted on a site other than giantbomb.com, wouldn't you think?  Anyways, I know Giant Bomb is popular over at NeoGAF and it's been referred to a few times by other podcasts such as Rebel FM, Weekend Confirmed and a couple of the old 1UP podcasts.

Did that site just get hacked? I typed it into Google (never heard of it before, wanted to find out what it was) and the following description says:

Hacked By SpySoLdier
[Link redacted by me because it's probably something nasty]. Hacked By SpySoLdier SpySoLdier Says : KaLbini Krmak istemem ama Yiter :). P@RS : Crackerzcrew ToprakLarna ...

Not too sure about the first part, this is the first forum i've gotten active on in a while, as for the second question about the female psyche, that one's easy.

The only forums I frequent other than these are NeoGAF, Cheap Ass Gamer and GameFaqs. It's mad popular on NeoGAF and gets referenced plenty of times on GameFaqs and CAG.

Whenever a new official game topic pops up on CAG the quicklook for that respective game is posted within the first 10 posts 95 percent of the time.

On GAF the QuickLook thread is up to 138 pages and they also have a "The Giant Bomb thread of not a podcast, Quick Look or Endurance Run - Emails?"

Obviously I've been here for a while but I have a story to tell about the popularity of Giant Bomb.

I was going to the store today and I overheard a large group of people talking about building something for Giant Bomb.  They needed a lot of supplies, so we'll probably see it on a future mailbag, right?  Not sure what use they have for all that fertilizer though.  Anyways these guys kept mentioning the 'Giant Bomb site' and how they thought it was blowing people away.  I think they started talking about Grand Theft Auto 4 as I was leaving because they were talking about guns and killing people, but you get the point.  Everyone is talking about Giant Bomb!

Sorta. When this site first launched, I was just on my way out of GamePro, and I used to mention this place all the time. I even (accidentally) inspired some guy to spam the hell out of the gamePro boards, and escape to this site. He messaged me saying "Hey bro I spammed GamePro last night and left for this place since you were talking about it"
I was a little baffled.

@ZanzibarBreeze: It got hacked a while ago, but our admins fixed it. The front page still displays that though, and they don't know how to get rid of it.

That's the only way to actually access the forums, as far as I know.

I heard about giantbomb a while back. I joined up because someone on Kotaku said the place had a really strong community and stuff... I think the site is certainly recognised among the staple gaming sites and blogs.

Kotaku spells retard in my book, but that might just be me...

By now I think GB has gotten pretty high up there. With the interns writing more articles and generally just pumping more content out there, plus the extra nonsense, I say GB qualifies as one of the bigger sites out there. At the very lest a lot bigger than Kotaku! We must not forget that not everyone who visit GB necessarily is a member, haven't signed up, ya know.

From as much as podcasts can get you, sites seem to admire GB for a variety of reasons. The wiki, quick looks, and the Bombcast get quite a bit of praise. I personally would say GB was actually well planned and thought about which led to it's ultimate success.

For the guy who wrote about "What's Kotaku?"

One of it's staff wrote this. To which I implore you, read more of his articles, and you will question why he's even on a gaming site.

The Bombcast and the site in generla are mentioned quite a bit on user comments for the Gamespot podcast (probably because that's where the Bombcast guys started podcasting). I don't spend a lot of time on the forums, though.

From someone who never heard of Jeff Gertsman or knew about any inside baseball with the goings on at Gamestop or wherever alot of these guys came from:

I heard about this site because a podcast I was listening to (Drunken Gamers) mentioned them for some reason. I checked out their podcast and really enjoyed. I actually didn't bother looking at the website for a few months cause I wasn't in love with the podcast.

To be honest, unless you are hardcore into the gaming industry, GiantBomb is NOT well known. I have alot of friends who are more hardcore gamers than I am and only know about the big sites like 1Up and Gamespot. I think people have a scewed view of how popular/famous GiantBomb is. I actually knew who Will Smith (Tested) was way before anyone from GiantBomb but that could be because I watch alot of TWiT and Revision3 shows.

I love GiantBomb and am VERY happy to have found them but to be honest, they aren't that big once you get to the non-hardcore video game crowds. GiantBomb very much has Industry fame but if you just care about videos games and NOT how they are made, who makes them, etc, no one knows who they are.

At least that's what i've found, could be different in other areas.

@IrishCoffee: Sounds about accurate.

From my own personal testing... more people know of Jeff Gerstmann than they do of Giantbomb... just based on people I've asked.
Of course, every time I end up asking somebody about Giant Bomb and they're completely stumped, as soon as I mention Jeff Gerstmann, they now know of Giant Bomb, and probobly end up visiting the site, which lowers my stats a little bit.

yahoo is a major portal, and a lot of people rarely leave it if its their home page.
