Games that were hard to get into, but you eventually enjoyed
Borderlands.
I put it down and lent it to a friend after a few days.
I got it back and started getting some good loot and really got into it. Only to fall back out once I got JC2.
YES! Personally I loved that game right from the get go, I just want to see more people recognizing how great it was. Like you said, there are so many flaws, but the core combat of Too Human is just too damn awesome. I really hope they continue the plan to make the trilogy (any word?) and do not get talked into changing the controls.
The biggest problem was the fact you had infinite lives and could just push your way through without actually getting good or really trying. If they had some kind of limiter, or score or something that made people need to use all the controls and abilities properly it will be a vast improvement.
Also can't believe so many people listed Far Cry 2. I thought that game was underrated, very well done, one of the few open world shooters I actually enjoyed.
Mirror's Edge. Difficult controls and guys shooting at you made it hard to get into, plus I was busy putting shingles on the roof and going to school so I didn't get any time to practice the controls. I also had runner vision turned off because getting told where to go defeats the purpose of the game. It was only after I beat the game once that I started to like it. I'd look at the trophy list and say, "These are all achievable so I'm going to try and get them." The speed runs and time trials are what make that game fun. Based on the reviews I decided I'd wait till it was $30 or less, but after playing it I know that I'd buy the sequel on day one.
" Killer7 for sure. The most boring first level just kept turning me off "YES! I agree as well. Now it's simply one of the best games ever.
I should also add Mass Effect 1 to the list. What a rough game.
While dragon age would be close to putting on this list but i liked the game from the beginning but it does take some time to understand the game combat system which is fun. So i will list a premature one because i have not broken that wall just yet but i'm assuming i will like it which is demon's soul. The game is tough and i have not really had a chance to really sit down to understand everything the game offers to get my footing. I just have been making a character walking aorund lost kill a few dudes then die and spend the next ten mins trying to get my souls back.
So i stopped and now i have too many games to keep up with to give that game the time it need to be a fun time. So i jump to mass effect 2 now dragon age, with red dead and mod nation waiting for me when they come out. I also have a backlog of persona 4 and 3 as well as sakura wars
Star Ocean: The Last Hope.
That game is just so effing amazing!!!!
I don't know what it is... It just gives me so much to do. I hate when I finish a game and put it down and I can't think of what to do next... I was unsure whether to play it bacause it isn't very popular, but I'm glad I did because for me, that game has no end.
Assassin's creed 2. I didn't like it at all, then later on I tolerated it. Maybe it would be alot more fun during my second play through.
I gave up on STALKER within the first 10 minutes. Twice. I tried a third time and it became one of my favorite games.
Definitely all the heavy RPGs like Oblivion, Fallout 3, and especially FFXIII. They were just all so slow burns and when you got to the open world stuff, you almost were too overwhelmed and had to practically go through the slow burn again to pick up the pace in the open world. Also had a hard time to getting into most horror games like Fear and Condemned. I usually don't handle horror games well. But when I finally get into it and finish it I am almost always satisfied and glad I went through it.
Mass Effect 2
I never liked Sc-fi (and I still don't), but somehow I tried it out and it turned out great.
Yea Persona 3 was an off again on again deal for a year or so. Before that it was Grand Theft Auto 3.
Nowadays I don't bother, if a game doesn't click I move on. I've probably missed so many gems. :(
it's funny you should say that because half-life 2 is actually an extremely linear game. i'm pretty skeptical that you spent 2 hours at the beginning of city 17 because there is absolutely nothing to do or look at. this is to say nothing of the fact that you are literally directed by npc's to go in a specific direction for most of that opening sequence." Half-Life 2. I had gotten so used to the campaigns of Halo, Gears Of War, and Call Of Duty basically telling me where to go. So when I pop in to play this game it feels really weird to not have any direction at all. I think I spent a good 2 hours on the opening city alone because I got lost easily. Eventually, I got a hang of the linear open-world concept and I have been having hella fun. I haven't even beaten it yet and I still have Episode 1 and 2 left to beat. "
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
The beginning of that game was really hard. You get stuck with pistols and sawn off shotguns coupled with the crazy inaccuracy of the game's shooting. I had to raid a bandit's nest and got killed within a couple seconds. Then I learned to play carefully and appreciated the "realistic" shooting.
Monster Hunter (PS2)
I played offline for a while and couldn't believe how clunky the attacking was. Great swords were slow, sword and shield combos went of for too long attacking in one direction, bowguns were weak, lance movement was slow, and the missions were boring. I eventually mastered the great sword and decided to take my skills online and got hooked. Then I started getting better at other weapons too. Though I still will never use the hammer.
Odin Sphere
Wasn't sure how I felt about the side scrolling, circular maps, and the battle and exp system. But I kept playing and my hoarding mentality kicked in when there was more stuff to collect for exp, money, and combination. Everytime I took control of a character for the first time, I loathed their fighting style, but I learned to get used to all their combat styles.
Dragon Quest 8
Eh the story is generic, battle system is generic, stupid dragon ball charact- holy shit this world is huge, there's so much shit to explore and do!
Too Human.
The game is buggy as hell and is replete with balance issues. But fuck, man. I kind of love that game.
" Posting this before people reply with "Final Fantasy XIII." "I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII right from the beginning.
" Gothic 1. The controls are fucked up, really fucked up. The kind of "you can't even manage your inventory with your mouse"-fucked up, but Gothic is still good. "oh man true that, i played gothic 2 first and i just loved it, it s still one of my fav games of all time , controls were a lil hard to get used to, especially the combat, then i got the 1st one and oh boy the combat was even harder but when i got the hang of it it was just as fun as the 2nd one
Vagrant Story.
First few hours I didn't care for it but it eventually grew to become one of my favorites.
" @Video_Game_King said:It took me until the robot of death part to get me to like it 100%. Up until that, my joy for the game was tentative." Posting this before people reply with "Final Fantasy XIII." "I enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII right from the beginning. "
