What are some games where you're like "OH FUCK I'M IN SPACE!"

Here are some that come to mind:

  1. Portal 2
  2. Final Fantasy 8
  3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  4. Gran Turismo 6
  5. Saints Row The Third

@zelyre: yup, that's why I wasn't surprise about going into space in FF8

Really? None of you have listed Final Fantasy VII? Or V?

I don't know about unexpectedly, but I expect at least more than half the Japanese games I play to go into space at some point.

Also, I think Soda Drinker Pro has a level in space, but that's just a guess.

Xenoblade Chronicles, which is the moment the game switches it's crazy output to eleven.

I was gonna say 007 Nightfire. That game was rad.

I'm a child of the PS1 Final Fantasy's, so V's space segment is lost on me. And I found 8's space segment more extensive and memorable than VII's which did not stick with me enough to remember it.

@akyho: All of the Phantasy Stars - the numbered series anyway - have some moment where you end up in space. The first one even has spaceports.

Also, III? What III? THERE IS NO PHANTASY STAR III!!!

You say that as though most games don't take place in space.

It's an old game, but No One Lives Forever had a space mission, and you wore an astronaut suit for the entire level. That game is a classic, and I'll always remember Cate Archer as a great female version of James Bond.

fuck yeah. The unexpected twist is still up there among my "oh shit we're in space" moments.

Beyond Good & Evil. That game really jumps the shark at the end.

Diablo 2's Arcane Sanctuary level.

Bayonetta, but, I guess if you wanna be real about it, that game gets so batshit crazy that going into space kinda seems like the logical conclusion...

You say that as though most games don't take place in space.

Most games don't make you think your on a medieval world, then find out there is advanced tech that leads onto you going up to a console and going "What this isnt a world but a generational ship!? in space? in the algol system!"

The threads about unexpectedly being in space...I think thats the definition of the moment in Phantasy star 3.

PS1 has space ports so you are not unexpectedly in space when you do. PS4 you get told to go into space and end up in space, so it is expected.

PS2 has you run around a place go on a warp pad, then run around a new place...the realise your in space and start the search to for a shuttle a bugger off. If I recall right. And the HQ you have been going to turns out to to half a spaceship so thats another surprise.

While PS3 I documented above.

Final Fantasy IV is probably the most out of the blue. In Star Ocean 2 the way it handles space is unexpected, lets say.

Medieval worlds are still technically in space.

@video_game_king: Why are you being so awkward? Why are you picking on me. Why do you feel the need to be a childish asshole this moment?

#37 Edited by Video_Game_King (36272 posts) -

@akyho:

I'm naturally awkward. (And it isn't helping that you're implying that I'm intentionally being an asshole, or that I'm picking on you specifically.)

It also helps that I've been operating on non-sleep for a while.

The Bouncer

Mega Man X7 (and X4 come to think of it.. although not really, since it's foreshadowed a full stage in advance)

Ace Combat 3 and 5

in Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge (or just Red Alert 2) there is a mission where you are on the moon

F-Zero GX (if that counts)

Sonic 2

Mario Kart 64

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

#42 Posted by SexyToad (2722 posts) -

Doesn't sonic adventures 2 take you to space randomly? Or has it really been that long since I've played it.

There's nothing unexpected about going into space in FF8. There's like 4 hours of setup for it.
