If you don't believe me check the comments section of Brad's great review of Devil May Cry. You know your site is popular when people hate a review of a game they haven't even played.

Or very idiotic. One of those. (probably both?)

The more smart people there are that discover the site the more... angry and idiotic people there are who follow.

I'm worried about the growing popularity. I don't want the site to attract denizens of cesspools like /v/.

The hilarious thing about this mentality is acting like /v/ or any other message board is a hive mind entity. It's not. It's a forum comprised of many different people with a bajillion different opinions. Just like Giant Bomb.

It's not about being a hivemind. It's the ability of a small group of people being able to voice their ideas as if it's the majority and to stir shit up when it feels like it. Giant Bomb, as a forum and community, can do this - we just don't because the overarching mentality of this place is "we kinda don't give a shit." /v/, and 4chan to a larger extent, does pull this shit off on a regular basis.

[edit] Also, this site still isn't that popular, it just has an active userbase among it's regulars and casual visitors. TheVerge.com, a site bigger than Giant Bomb but still considered a small tech website compared to something like Engadget, can get a 2000+ comment section on an article about Android getting a small update on Samsung phones.

No. No no no no nooooooo. Someone linked to an actual thread in /v/ last night 'discussing' the review. It was filled with nothing but personal threats threats of graphic violence, and insults consisting of nothing but profanity and and a shit ton of slurs of every flavor, directed directly at Brad. It's honestly not even close.

Grab your torches and pitchforks and lets meet at the CBSi building in half an hour! Or lets wait until it gets dark to be even more dramatic.

The internet loves to go crazy when something is preemptively condemned, judged or deemed unworthy and then someone with access to a big platform goes against that opinion.

#19 Posted by Salbert (32 posts) - 4 months, 3 days ago

@Oldirtybearon: I'm not talking about a generic "hivemind" mentality, I'm talking about an internet lynch-mob mentality composed of gamers who feel the need to go on a holy crusade against reviewers they disagree with. Go on /v/ nowadays and you see people complaining about "casuals" unironically and getting seriously pissed off that someone disagrees with them. These are the lowest common denominator of gamers.

This whole thing depresses me deeply. I dont care if Brad was bought off, the people holding that opinion are acting just shameful. We can joke about the internet and how it's a hate machine, but it really is.

What does any of this accomplish? I'll tell you what: it gives a bunch of hateful, do-nothing people something to lash out at. Something to nonsensically demoralize until they feel they've elevated themselves to 'internet warrior of truth' status. All these people saying things like: "His lack of integrity must be questioned." Give me a fucking break. It's a videogame website, not the militaristic government of some impoverished nation. Get some perspective.

Knowing the way /v/ works that thread will have 404'd by now, but I'd be interested to see an archive or some screen caps of it. I just wanna see it out of morbid curiosity. I want to know just how fucked we are as a culture.

Uhh, what? Who the fuck thinks Brad was bought off? At this point, if any single member of the Giant Bomb community thinks that any review of any game is artificially inflated, they need to get their heads checked.

Do they remember how this fucking site got started in the first place?

I love GB and it's really the only forum I've ever gotten slightly involved in. That said, one of my big rules is to never post in a review's comment thread and only read them for a laugh, especially for games like DmC that have a big internet cult following. This strategy has worked well for me.

i don't think it woud have a big impact on the community. We have a universal process on dealing with trolls, spam, ect.

also the fact that most of us speak properly and mature, it usually rubs off on others (disclaimer: not an absolute statement)

That's funny. I just clicked on the comments link of the DMC review to see where things went, and it literally crashed my browser. It's most likely because I'm at work and they haven't upgraded their internet explorer version in 3 years, but it was still fitting. Things got ugly on there. Yeesh. Ok, now it just happened again! Something is fishy here. Wait....nope, our computers just suck.

It's like that one E3 podcast all over again when a bunch of kids around here first learned the phrase "corporate shill".

An unfortunate fact of life is that there just aren't any good communities of a substantial size on the internet. Too many meek individuals need a place where they get to be the tough guy and hurl insults over the least consequential things...like Brad enjoying the new Devil May Cry.

At least Giant Bomb has a small contingent of users that contribute interesting threads and discussions. But for the most part it is best to just ignore comments in general. Just like every other website.

#46 Edited by Draxyle (1266 posts) - 4 months, 3 days ago

I take solace in the fact that maybe less than 1% of the viewers of Giantbomb actually post comments (as indicated by that other article Patrick and others tweeted sometime last week). So really, the people like us who actually post are the crazy outliers.
