Is Limbo a platformer? If so, I really enjoyed that game.

Kirby Super Star through emulation. It's the best platformer ever.

Limbo and Shovel Knight are fantastic as well.

Prince of Persia 2008 is a really good 3D platformer.

It's not primarely a platformer, but the Metroid Prime games (at least with the first one, haven't played the full trilogy yet) has some of the most accurate and fun jumping in a game.

I was really impressed by Mutant Mudds on the 3DS, not sure how it is on other platforms since it is pretty much on everything but the mechanic of jumping into the fore/background was a solid use of the 3D on the system.

Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures is legitimately one of the best action-platformers I've played in the past couple of years. Super tight gameplay, excellent level design, awesome music and art, and if you've ever enjoyed AVGN you'll get some chuckles. It's challenging and a whole lot of fun.

I hear good things about Freedom Planet if you're looking for a Sonic alternative. Gunman Clive 1 and 2 are both really cheap games at around an hour long, but they're fun and memorable. And Spelunky is one of the best games ever made.

You can always go grey market and play a backup copy of Super Mario World (AKA "the greatest platformer of all time") on your PC. You can find copies of the SNES cartidge on Ebay for $8-$15 USD, but everyone already owns a copy, right?

Which ones are you gonna check out? There are loads of good choices in this thread. Some of them I haven't tried myself. I'm having fun platforming again (Grow Home is the first platformer I've played in a while) so I'm going to try Braid and fez next.

Ah, thanks for the clarification! I do believe I'll check it out anyway as it happens that I love puzzle games as well. I'm from the old school where we didn't have solutions on the internet and most games were punishingly tough (late 40's up in here), so I'm fine with the game being really difficult.

Rochard is pretty great.

Non-2d I just played through deadcore and it was great. There's a quicklook on the site and I highly recommend picking it up. Most overlooked game of last year. It's more about the puzzles than the platforming, but it still has some fast challenging platforming.

Edit: Also, Thomas was alone is cool. Again a lot of puzzle aspects, but still a platform.

They Bleed Pixels is one of my personal favorite. Plays like a cross between Supermeat Boy with the a hint of combat like Dustforce, though I like it more than both games. Its not that great to look at and the combat can be fiddly but, its got some of the best level progression in any 2D platformer. Its starts off kinda easy and then it just gets harder and harder with out letting up. Its really challenging and the combat adds a cool extra layer with cool dashes, juggles, and special moves. The levels are long but it has a smart checkpoint system where you can basically checkpoint anywhere without enemies or traps. I think its hugely underrated.

1001 Spikes is also really good. Its kind of a platforming puzzle. The actual platforming is pretty easy with dedicated short and high jump buttons. The trick is figuring out to navigate these ridiculous trap filled levels. It feels like the developers are playing with you in a really difficult and fun way without getting into I Wanna Be They Guy territory. It also looks and sounds great!

Some great lists up there, I'll try not to repeat any suggestions:

- Dust: An Elysian Tale

- Electronic Super Joy

- La-Mulana

- Mark of the Ninja

- Starbound (has platforming elements but more of a sidescrolling Minecraft)

- The Swapper (if you like puzzle games & platformers this is for you)

- Thomas Was Alone

- Tiny Barbarian DX

If you haven't played Rayman Origins it's just as fun. I feel like anyone who liked one would like the other too. Check it out if you haven't already.

Origins is really good, but I strongly prefer Legends. It was more accessible, since the last world of Origins was far too tough, and the chest levels were just cringe inducing. Legends has its share of hard levels, but nothing that locked your progress as much...

Besides, Legends already includes the best levels of Origins and the music levels, which are just genius.

Can always count on my buddy Slag here to point you in the right direction. I've highlighted my own number 1 recommendation! :)

What I like most about Guacamelee as a platformer:

  • Combat moves are also jumping moves, which is just a super interesting way of movement! Think about how the "Third Jump" works in Super Smash Brothers and you have an idea. This is Guaca's smartest design element IMO.
  • Wall Jumping. I think jumping off of walls is one of the most satisfying things we can do in video games. I became addicted to this feature in Super Mario 64, but it's all over the place in games, especially metroidvanias.
  • High Precision, High Challenge - most of the platforming isn't hard... but there are some serious head scratchers. Especially when the Alternate World starts to feature prominently.
  • Co-Op! Doesn't make any of the above easier. But worth noting.

From the same list I would definitely point to Fez as a high-water mark as well.

God I need to play Shovel Knight...

The lack of Megaman on this list is absolutely astounding.

Megaman 2 and Megaman X are two of the greatest platformers of all time.

Not EXACTLY a platformer, but Castlevania Symphony of the Night is pretty awesome to control and has great systems and progression.
