Poll Have you been offended by the content of a game? (496 votes)

Yes 20%
No 80%

Inspired by this thread.

And I mean offended by something that occurs in the game itself, rather than something surrounding the game (such as being offended by the developer's audacity to charge $60...)

Yes, lets not be decent human beings who don't go out of our way to be offensive because Stephen Fry said something once. That's a terrible argument, and it isn't even the first fucking time Stephen Fry, noted scholar (wait, no, he's some guy who was a comedy writer and actor once and now fronts a panel show), has been posted in this thread. Bravo sir.

This is especially funny where if you follow Fry on Twitter you will see him being offended plenty. Reasonably so. He doesn't like, for example, muslim extremists and he finds their decapitation of innocent people in the name of creating terror to be offensive.

So stop it, please. Finding something offensive is not this great big evil. Please differentiate forcing censorship to protect your precious feelings from simple offense. Thank you.

Incidentally, if you didn't find, for example, a rape simulator video game (RapeLay or whatever it is called) offensive then what the fuck is wrong with you?

Yea, because that's exactly what I said and all....

Good question, and I had to think about it. I immediately thought of the Airport scene in MW2. I think the devs were trying too hard to shock. Even if they were making a statement of some kind, or attempting to make the player engage in some kind of self-exploration, it fell completely flat. Was it patently offensive to me? No. I think it was just poor judgment.

@devoureroftime Yeah, it's sad all around, I can see... Sounds like a really terrible situation in a lot of reservations, with no real path to a better life...

@forkboy That's a stupid argument. No one is trying to ban anything, but it's all right for people to voice their own personal displeasure. Last I heard, freedom of speech goes both ways.

Some people thought I should feel offended by the game because I'm an African-American, but I could care less.

Couldn't. Couldn't care less.

I was in the middle of watching a porno when I posted that comment. I didn't make time to check my errors.

That is just the best fucking excuse ever.

Agreed.

I think it's a really interesting question to ask, I just wish someone actually had an example cuz I can't think of any for myself. Maybe all the offended people are too busy complaining about the offensive games in other threads.

I don't want to sound like a hypocrite, but the only thing that I could say might actually "offend" me is people that get actively offended by stuff. When I say actively I mean like, "I don't like something, therefore it shouldn't exist and nobody should get to..." view/listen to/partake in whatever they're talking about and then they start writing letters and protesting and trying to create drama. I think it just reveals a sense of entitlement and shows how self-centered people can be.

Obviously there are things that are just bad, destructive, harmful, damaging, however you want to put it, and those things need to be addressed. However, when it's literally something that's only doing harm in your opinion, but there is no evidence to back that up, then you're just being an entitled douche if you think it shouldn't exist or it should be significantly altered in some way that you find acceptable. The easy example is all the politicians and parents that think video games cause children to become violent in real life and all that nonsense. They can go ahead and never play the games and not like it all they want, but when they start trying to argue that nobody should be playing them, even adults, that's when they cross over into reactive, entitled, self-centered, moron territory.

I find any media that fetishizes sexual assault to be creepy and offensive on a personal level, from that new 300 movie to shit like rape simulators.

Sure, every once in a while I see something that's like "now, that was uncool." But I'm not going to set fire to twitter for it.

You DON'T find it troubling that there are people out there chopping off the heads of innocent people?

Obviously that's not the case, so what is your argument? The point of the quote is that it's easy to just go around saying you're offended by stuff and think that it somehow means that something should happen as a result. There are plenty of religious people that think that because they are offended by gays, gays shouldn't be allowed equal rights. The difference between this kind of offensive and being offended by chopping heads off is that chopping someone's freakin head off is bad, period. Some random gay guy somewhere being able to marry another guy is something these "offended" people think is equally offensive, but are basing it on hate, intolerance, and a 2000 year old book.

If you're comparing those two kinds of offended and saying Fry is a hypocrite then you're just not getting the subtle difference between marrying a guy, or chopping his head off.
