Linking to Steam Account?

I was wondering if i bought a hard copy of TF2 if i could link it to my steam account, or would i have to get it from steam itself?

It requires steam to activate and for the internal server browsing/patching so it will appear on your games list within steam when activated.

You can yes. At the bottom of your Games list you hit "Add Game" and select "Activate a product on Steam" and enter the CD key.

If you buy the game when you install I believe it will install via Steam (I am not 100% sure but when I got Football Manager 10 I was given the option to install it via steam and it then adds the game and updates automatically to your game list).
 
You won't be required to download the game itself then but you will still need to allow Steam to update the game to be able to play online on it.

All valve games activate via steam. Put the disk in, and it'll install straight into steam, and from then on it'll act like a standard steam game.

@ssjdragonslayer: You can add them as a shortcut in steam, but you can't actually activate them with steam. Some non-valve retail games have steam installs (e.g. Modern Warfare 2), but most don't. There is a list of retail games that are steam-compatible here.

u can just buy tf2 right there and not have to worry about it not getting into steam.
