What video game series's were once big successes, personally to you or in general, have fallen in quality and/or popularity and have turned from most anticipated to more mainstream rubbish?
Once were great, now not so great series's
I'm with you on your Tomb Raider comment, I loved the first three on PSX and it went bad from there, although Angel Of Darkness wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be. I'm going to pick up Underworld seeing as I haven't played a TR game since AoD.
Spyro, Crash, and Tony Hawk. Those three game series on the PS1 were my entrance into gaming, and they've all been utterly torn to shreds by terrible games made for cheap.
I loved Spyro 1, never played the rest. Lots of people would love Insomaniac to pick up the rights to the Spyro IP again, but personally I'd rather have a new RaC game, I don't think I would like a Spyro game on a next gen console, just let the series die already.
"Colin Mcrae Rally series - The only racing game that I had an addiction for, but it's turned from Rally sim to arcade racer, it's just not the same."Dude, have you played DiRT? It doesn't have Colin McRae's name in the title, but it is his last game, and dude, it's quite excellent. R.I.P.
I think most people have nailed most of the fallen series. Spyro and Crash, of course. Sonic has been struggling for quite some time. Tony Hawk just went off the deep end with Proving Grounds (some would say it happened earlier, but I thought Project 8 was a solid entry that kind of made up for some of the previous games. Turok is another one that started out great but has had problems ever since. Personally I thought the latest one was disappointing and it couldn't hold my interest long, but it was nowhere near as bad as Turok Evolution.
Unreal Tournament. Epic decided its new cash cow is Gears of War on the 360 and blames the poor sales of their PC products on piracy (Unreal Tournament III was released in a late beta state, and the dedicated server package wasn't even up to par with stuff like file redirects until the third or fourth revision). Fuck that, I bought the game on release day and was thoroughly disgusted at the product in the end.
"Doom 3 is bad when compared crunching on jawbreakers."I think that is the first dissenting opinion I've ever heard against Doom 3.
And to that, I can only shake my head. Doom 3 was brilliant, I thought.
I think that is the first dissenting opinion I've ever heard against Doom 3.You probably haven't been listening very closely then. Doom 1 was basically revolutionary. It can reasonably be credited for the popularity of the first person shooter genre TO THIS DAY. Other than that I think people mostly thought Doom 3 was good, just not great or amazing. Lots of people hated the darkness, but I hated the slowed down pace, more linear levels, less action & the required reading / listening to long audio logs for codes that you couldn't even fight while listening to because you'd miss the code and have to listen to the thing all over again.
And to that, I can only shake my head. Doom 3 was brilliant, I thought.

"Dude easy question, Sonic.This
I think everyone could agree with that one."

And this
Sonic has fallen so far from grace that there is no way he's ever going to be the sonic we all knew and loved. They went right in pulling it from a 2d to a 3d plat former with sonic adventures on Dreamcast but it was like once they did that they ran out of ideas and just kept making the same game over and over again till the world got sick of him.
Same thing with Tony Hawk, his games started out brilliant then slowly became a joke, I personally blame Bam Margera for that. Once they added him to the fore front the whole thing went to shit. THUG was good, it brought the ability ot get off your board, spray paintin and other tweaks to the system. Then THUG2 came and there was no innovation just bullshit. Same with THAW and Project 8.
Tony Hawk, tomb raider, NFS, zelda, unreal tournament,
"Death_Burnout said:I completely agree. The Sonic series has been going rapidly downhill after the Genesis era. And THUG 2 completely killed the Tony Hawk series."Dude easy question, Sonic. This

I like Dirt, but it's no sim.
far Cry 2 , Alone in the dark , Silent hill homecoming (even though it is a terrific game , past Silent hills specially Silent hill 2 were better )
