Researchers: Attractive people have higher IQs

ATTRACTIVE people have been given even more reason to celebrate after scientists claimed handsome men and pretty women were more likely to have a high IQ.

Researchers from the London School of Economics (LSE) said that physically-attractive people have above-average IQs, with good-looking men around 13.6 points above the norm and attractive women 11.4 points above average.

The findings, based on UK and US studies, suggested that the link between beauty and intelligence means the children of attractive couples will inherit both attributes, forming a genetic link between the qualities.

“Both in the British and American samples, physical attractiveness is significantly positively associated with general intelligence, both with and without controls for social class, body size and health.

The association between physical attractiveness and general intelligence is also stronger among men than among women,” said LSE lead researcher Satoshi Kanazawa, writing in the latest edition of the journal Intelligence.

More than 52,000 people across the UK and US were measured on their academic progress and intelligence, as well as scored on their appearance.

 
“If more intelligent men are more likely to attain higher status, and if men of higher status are more likely to marry beautiful women, then, given that both intelligence and physical attractiveness are highly heritable, there should be a positive correlation between intelligence and physical attractiveness in the children’s generation," Mr Kanazawa said.

He added, however, that his findings were statistical and should not be applied to individuals, saying that “it goes without saying that our contention that beautiful people are more intelligent is purely scientific. It is not a prescription for how to treat or judge others.”

The hottest British person is only mildly attractive anywhere else. So these findings are worthless. ;-P

Sounds like all the air-heads at my school who ace all their classes but can't do anything of real value because all they do is memorize course material without ever understanding it. Dead serious, you ask some of them to apply what they learn to a real world situation and they give you a blank stare and recite the definition again.
 
University's really bumming me out so far.  Test grades at my school aren't awarded to sharp thinkers or people who truly understand the material, but instead to those who can memorize the textbook.  Hence why I am becoming a math major, no more memorization of useless crap, only applied logic.
 
Also, kinda skeptical of their criteria.  After all, looks are subjective.  You can kinda tell I hate useless and wasteful research like this.

How do you scientifically measure beauty? As George Carlin once said: "It's all bullshit folks and it's bad for ya." 
 It would make some sense from the angle that "ugly" kids don't do as well in school and are less active in class because they have lower self esteem or something, but this is just waste of time and money.

Hey, I just found out I'm physically attractive (although I have photographic evidence that kinda goes against the science).

Haha, good point.  Though the stuff you have to memorize only aids you in working towards an answer, the formula/theorem itself is not the answer (unless doing a proof of course).  That's why I find math so rewarding.  You can have everything you need to solve a question in front of you, but without your abilities, it is all useless. "

I think being intelligent makes you more attractive, not the other way around.

The definition of beauty changes over the course of time, so I dunno how they came to this conclusion.

now I may be confused on statistics, but it sounds like all their test subjects fell within the average standard deviation, thus it seems like a mistake to say that they are really more intelligent, since from a statistical perspective they are in a group with like 70 percent of the population.

Even though I prove this theory is right, I don't want to be considered the same as people who consider themselves smart because they can recite someone elses theories or something.
Therefore I will continue to not shave my beard and look like the lazy tech support rep that I am.
 
That being said, this research is kinda stupid. I would like to know where they get their findings and what the pool was they considered attractive and smart or ugly and stupid. Granted if you're a redneck (a real redneck, not a wannabe redneck =P ) your probably fugly and not to smart either, but that doesn't mean there is no exception to that. 
 
This is how it starts, though. Next thing you know they'll have a study that shows rich people are better looking then poor people, and then science will start defining what beautiful is for us based on social class, and before you know it we're all robots with monkey brains... AAAAHAHHHHH!!!!

Actually, I tend to find that it's the exact opposite.

As a scientist, I disagree.

I've always known this. Hotter people are just better people overall—it's science! Hence why I try to deal with ugly people as little as possible.

Rich people are able to spend more money on both their hygiene and education, while poor people will suffer in both categories.
