This year was great for game music. Here are a few of my favorites....
This year was amazing for game music.
Yeah! Been a very good year for game music - good picks!
However, don't forget the Bastion soundtrack - I think that's my favorite for the year,
... and a few others.
I got Jamestown of one of those Humble Indie Bundles but still haven't played it... I should give it a shot.
The Binding of Isaac soundtrack is pretty great too, but most of the songs are remixed of Super Meat Boy tracks. I still don't understand how PacMan CE DX beat it last year.
I'd like to also highlight the Battlefield 3 soundtrack. It worked beautifully during the campaign, and there were two standout points where the game's soundtrack really came into its own, I think.
When Dima jumps from the plane and the main theme begins to play and drown out everything else.
When you enter the safe room in the bank. The music and atmosphere there actually caused me to feel quite chilled.
I don't think this year was good for game music. Not much stands out. Unlike last year where I felt several games had great soundtracks.
Since Metal Gear Solid 3 technically had a release in the form of the MGS HD collection, can we still count Snake Eater? That's the best damn video game song of all time!
This is still one of, if not, my favourite video game moment of all time.
@nick_verissimo: The first time I played through MGS3, I had the audio turned off whilst listening to podcasts. That way I played through the whole game, but didn't get any story. Also, that meant that I totally missed the ladder music, and thought it was kind of weird that there was a boring ladder-climbing sequence for 2 minutes. However, I knew I had to actually *experience* the game for reals, so a couple weeks back I finished MGS3 for real, and that ladder climb was among the most epic parts of the game.
PS MGS3 is great and all, but "triple-crossing"? Really?
I personally feel like that the main thing from this year was not just good game music but that this year music was actually used to full effect. Saints Row 3 while not having any memorable original music would not have been half the game it is if it was not for the appropriate use of licensed music(power playing as you skydive onto the penthouse). The end credits of Arkham City with the Joker singing the hymnal is a good little reassurance that yes joker is fine and reminds you who the Joker is. Bastion's music while amazing in its own right really amplifies the effect of certain parts.
