Alan Wake: Awesome stoytelling. If Survival horror survives, ti will be because people take risks with it, like in this game.
The Darkness: Awesome characterizations. I felt like I knew these people.
Halo Reach: I never really "got" Halo until I played this game. Now I get it and it's still the best one. I don't want a story about a chosen one. I'd rather see more of just soldiers, even spartans, with no special destiny, doing their part. Also, the multiplayer was the best.
Mass Effect 1: Now THIS is how you do a Star Trek game. The first game really made me feel like an explorer in the galaxy. I personally loved the Mako and exploring mysterious, sometimes boring planets in between serious missions. It made the galaxy seem so big.
Batman: Arkham Asylum: A perfect game. It set a standard for melee combat, and for stealth, and had a Metroid-like dungeon structure.
Bioshock: Everything has been said, really.
Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim: Just play this game, if you haven't. You have to see this thing, man.
Left 4 Dead: Everybody else is just tossing co-op multiplayer at a wall and hoping it sticks to their game. Left 4 Dead is the real thing. You need all four to survive. It's by design. The stories you can tell about playing this game are so nuts.
Borderlands series: Talk about bringing us something new. Years from now, "Borderlands-like" may just be a thing.
Portal: This is the game I would give somebody if they've never played anything ever. It's masterfully designed to teach you without being dumb about it, and everything about it is whip-smart.
Super Meat Boy: My favorite platformer ever.
