Britain didn't lose the empire. They gave it away for publicity reasons.
Also as an answer to the poll if we were able to take the entire history of the Roman empire both East and West there has never been anything like it in human history and it's incredibly unlikely that there ever will be. I prefer the Byzantine period myself but the entire history of the Roman empire is just fantastic.

What about the Holy Roman Empire? The bastard off spring of the Vatican that swayed continental European politics through their most prosperous years only being destroyed by two world wars (and copious amounts of inbreeding)?
@Jimbo: Large portions of the world speak French and Spanish also American business success has just as much to do with the continued practice of speaking English as does the success of the English empire.. doesn't matter though because we'll all be speaking Chinese soon.. my bank machine already has the option of English, Francais or <insert indecipherable Chinese symbols here>
@Shirogane: If you refer to Jacen Solo (Darth Caedus), then you would be surprised to know that about a 150 years after Episode IV the Empire still stands (Caedus was like 35-40 years after Episode IV).
Well i think that settles it. :P I voted British but i didn't realize the galactic empire was on there...of course they'd be the best. So i go with Galactic. Despite voting British.
