Souls 4%
Persona 1%
Half Life 12%
Something else, and I'm going to tell you what that is 7%

I thought this might make an interesting poll / thread. Feel free to vote for multiple franchises.

When considering a game, imagine a hypothetical situation where a new game in a series has been released to solid reviews. You used to enjoy games in this series, but would you be interested in this one?

Which games are you now sick of? Which game design was copied and pasted until you no longer cared? Which franchise refuses to just die like it should, or at least take some time off and give it a rest already?

What? Why is this a poll?

Splinter Cell. Loved the first three, then they got poopy.

I came in here to say this.

Though, Battlefield is slowly getting there...also the Worms games.

Call of Duty and Gears of War. And Halo, but that's a little different.

Call of Duty? Duh. I played a whole hell of a lot of 4 through Black Ops, and quite a bit of Modern Warfare 3, but after that I was like "meh". I played some Advanced Warfare and thought that was fun but then they had to go and fuck that up so eh.

Gears of War still seems fine and some part of me wanted to play GoW4. I sat down and played some GoW3 to see if I was still interested in the franchise and turned it off before I even finished the first level. I could not make myself play it.

Halo is a little different. At this point, the story is such a mess of books, movies, anime, and games that I just don't give a fuck about that anymore. This series makes Kingdom Hearts look easy to get into at this point. Halo 5 was fine gameplay-wise but it doesn't really change all that much about Halo's gameplay. There are some cool additions, but it's still the same gameplay loop of the first few games and if I want that specific flavor of gameplay - and sometimes I do - I'll just play one of the Halo games with Bungie's name stamped on it. If I want to play a game with a great aesthetic and great gameplay and a totally nonsensical story, I'll play Destiny.

I just can't see myself getting back into Minecraft, Lego, Tomb Raider, or Batman.

  • I'm burned out on creative/survival games and Minecraft's really starting to show its age on top of that.
  • I played Lego Star Wars Ep. 4-6 a whole lot, and knowing every other Lego game is the same, I have no reason to buy any others.
  • I loved Tomb Raider 1-5 and the Legend-Underworld series. When they decided to reboot the franchise after that -- dropping the ridiculous Avalon plot, the cocky, experienced heroine, and the return of Natla and Lara's doppelganger -- in favor of a darker and edgier story and being a shooter, I completely lost interest.
  • Arkham Asylum was a great metroidvania. Arkham City was an interesting use of Asylum's tools and combat in an open world setting. Arkham Origins was a weaker rehash (but that multiplayer was pretty fun). Between my dwindling interest and WB's stance on Arkham Knight's PC port being what it is, I'm done with that series.

Hm. Nice to get some of that off my chest.

I just don't care about Halo anymore. I was never a big Halo guy to begin with, but 343 has done such a bad job with the story of 4 and 5 that I really don't care about what happens in Halo 6. What a shame because the games look great.

Diablo, WarCraft and StarCraft I suppose. Really loved the original Diablo, StarCraft and the first two WarCraft games. I did enjoy Diablo II at the time of release, but going back to it in recent years I can't say I'm particularly fond of it, and I actively disliked WarCraft 3, Diablo 3 and much of StarCraft II.

I guess I'd add Grand Theft Auto too, though apart from GTA IV it's mostly out of disinterest than actively disliking them. San Andreas and GTA V really didn't capture what I had enjoyed about the first few GTA games (including the PSP ones, I kinda think Vice City Stories is the best in the series).

I would have picked Mario during the New Super Mario Wii days. After 3D World and Mario Maker, though, they're on a roll.

Assassins creed is my #1. The series peaked with brotherhood.

Also:

- Mario and Zelda. I used to love those games (I'm talking about the really old ones -- like TLOZ and Super Mario World) but I just don't care for the 3D aspect. Hyper light drifter was a better Zelda game than they've made on console in decades.

- Gran turismo -- although I could see myself getting back in if vr is compelling enough

Not listed: Madden and literally anything else sports related with the possible exception of the Show, which manages to stay fresh enough.

@spaceinsomniac: yeah, I guess. I think even the new Super Mario Bros. stuff isn't the worst in the world. I just mean from the perspective that mario has brought me alot of joy from when I was a wee lass to now. That people not caring about mario kinda bums me out. ?

The Need For Speed used to be cool automotive pornography until Underground. Dodge Viper got traded in for a Dodge Neon and it wasn't even an SRT4.

I used to be a positively mahoosive Halo fan back in the day and still hold the series in high regard, but even I have a hard time understanding or remembering what that sentence is supposed to mean.

@isomeri: I distinctly recall Ryan making fun of H4's nonsensical lingo on a Bombcast episode and it had me in tears. H5 took it to another level as far as requiring the player to consume other media in order to have any clue about what's going on. A lot of Halo fans lay this blame on the lead writer Brian Reed, but I don't know how much truth there is to that. Luckily, H5's multiplayer has kept me satisfied, otherwise I probably would have washed my hands of 343 by now.

Edit: not the clip I was thinking of, but still hilarious/tragic:

Tetris: I still love it think it's a great game, but I haven't needed a new one since the Game Boy and I haven't played it in years.

Pokemon: Played Blue obsessively, but haven't touched a main line game since. Whenever I'm tempted I think about a random battle while wading through grass or turning a corner and getting challenged by a trainer and I think "No thanks."

The Sims: I had some fun with the first one, building silly houses and having my sims burn them down, but it's not a series I think about much these days.

Smash Bros: While I did buy the Wii and Wii U versions they didn't have the same lasting appeal as Melee did.

I'll chip in here. The DS (Original) version of Tetris is spectacular. I played it literally every day for 3 months with my ex. The single player is super fun and the multiplayer is top tier.

If you ever feel the need for Tetris, this one is definetely well worth a look in

Agreed, the multiplayer in Halo 5 and the combat mechanics overall still showed that 343 can do some really fun and interesting stuff. What Halo's lost most of all during the years in my opinion, is atmosphere and a sense of tranquility. The first three games had room for quiet moments, exploration in solitude and some awe-inspiring landscapes to stroll through. Ever since Reach, it's all been too hectic and rock & roll for my taste.

I really wish that 343 would take a hard look at what DICE did with Battlefield 1. There are too many shooters on the market these days to be able to sustain a franchise just by copying what everyone else is doing and trying to appeal to the widest audience possible. BF1 is a relatively slow paced and tactical FPS based in what has historically been regarded as a dull setting, and it's still been able to draw wide audiences. It's certainly a more interesting product than that new Call of Duty. Gears 4 did something a bit similar by having a sense of humour about itself. Hopefully 343 will slowly realise what aspects differentiate those early Halo games from all other franchises.

COD and AssCreed are my biggest ones. I just had my fill of COD's style of shooter. I was never a diehard fan by any means, but I really enjoyed MW, MW2, WaW, and Blops1. Ultra-guided FPS experiences have had their day, though.

AssCreed, well... same as anybody, I just stopped being able to muster enthusiasm for yet another entry. Even Black Flag couldn't hold my interest for very long. It's a damn shame, too, as I still love the *idea* of the games. It's really cool that this bizarre historical sci-fi thingie ended up being one of the most popular franchises in gaming. I just wish the actual experience of playing them was... y'know... less samey. (weirdly, thinking about where AC went wrong has made me want to play it. So I guess I do still care on some level after all)

Halo is another one where I couldn't bring myself to care anymore. Halo 3 and ODST were, to me, the perfect entries. I love those games to death. I stopped playing Reach after about three hours (I really liked the MP, though. So much fun with the Decoy power), and that was it for me and Halo. Not the fault of the games, really, just me moving on.

A reversed example for funsies: I always hated Tomb Raider. Bullshit games that control like bullshit. Fuck Tomb Raider. The reboot? Awesome. Yeah, it was Uncharted-lite, but it was super fun. I hear Rise is even better, so that's exciting for when I get around to it. It's a weird feeling to like Tomb Raider all of a sudden.

Rocksteady really screwed the pooch with Arkham Knight. Asylum is on my shortlist of favorite games ever but after Knight's half-hearted bloatfest I can't muster a single shit about the future of that franchise.

I stopped caring about Halo when I passed on getting an Xbox One. I didn't hate 4 like some people did, but I didn't care enough for the franchise's future to get a new console for it.

I have no faith in any future Bioware projects, Mass Effect, Dragon Age or otherwise, after Inquisition fell so flat and they said they were going to be taking a lot of cues from its design in their future games.

Zelda used to be huge for me, not sure I'll return to it at this point.

Uncharted was great fun the first two-three entries, but I'm over modern Naughty Dog at this point.

Was never that big into Assassin's Creed, but fell off that quicker than most people.

While I'm not sick of them in theory, the fact I have Arkham Knight and Phantom Pain sitting unplayed says something too.

I avoid a lot of series burnout by skipping entries in a series. Helps keeps things fresh as some games have a yearly cycle or close enough.

Care about may be strong, but out all of them, it'd be Street Fighter, or fighting games as a whole. Street Fighter 2 is more or less the game that started me into playing games (I've been around and watched them before that, but hadn't really held the controller to play, as I watched my brothers prior), but now, I don't really play fighters with any real enthusiasm, nor do I buy any. I'd be pretty excited about a new Capcom vs. SNK though, but would most likely not play much of it.

Zelda and Mario are my top 2. Playing Mario Maker last year did nothing for me. I think I've been spoiled by the way more interesting platformers in the recent years. Zelda is a different beast. I really liked them as a kid and then realized that I don't actually like playing most of the game.

I used to truly believe on a conceptual level that I was a fan of the Legend of Zelda. Then, as I tried out more of the series, I realized that I only really like Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass. A Link to the Past? Ocarina? Twilight Princess? Bored to tears by all of them. I am, however, strangely intrigued by Breath of the Wild.

About halfway into Uncharted 4 I also felt the fatigue setting in. It's a shame because I usually really like the mechanical foundations of the series, but I may have hit my wall. In retrospect, I wish I had skipped 3.

I recently had a major one-two punch with Bethesda RPGs. First I found myself bored out of my mind with Fallout 4 and returned it after one day, then I played a little bit of the Skyrim special edition, only to find out that I was also now incredibly bored by a game I once sank 60+ hours into.

Basically, I'm with Jeff when it comes to Bethesda. Until they can make a cleaner game with a better story, I'm totally checked out of any Bethesda made RPGs. Maybe if Obsidian gets another crack at Fallout, then I'll check that out.

Most of the above. Not really enjoying where gaming has gone over the last 5 years really. I kind of just gave up playing FFXV when I "had" to travel to the beach to buy a tomato (obviously it was a side quest). Dragon Age Inquisition felt like completing a shopping list or pretty much any open world game does. Has every game become Shenmue?

I'd love more games like Bioshock Infinite!!!

Mario has been forgettable to me since the flop that was Sunshine. Zelda is in no better a situation after the massively overhyped (let alone hard to look at) Wind Waker.

Nintendo has also run Star Fox, Donkey Kong, and Metroid into the ground. But hey, those kart games are still okay.

It's a talented, high-quality collection of studios that just looove to spin their wheels in totally unoriginal ways. Such a waste.

COD, Pokemon, and AC for me.

I got Alpha Sapphire and I just couldn't finish it.

I actually liked the first couple World War 2 COD's back in the day but, I haven't played a COD since Modern Warfare 2. I didnt like MW2 and every COD game after looked like the same shit so I never got into the series.

I played AC Revelations for a few hours and got bored, I never got back into AC.

The one-two punch of Assassins Creed 3 and Mass Effect 3 being disappointing stopped me from ever truly being excited about a sequel ever again.

So those two and Pokemon which I used to live and breath but is now something not for me.

I had a period in high school where i watched Naruto to see what's up with the anime. I enjoyed it quite a bit but eventually dropped it once the episodes felt like endless fillers.

Also Assassins Creed. While i think Brotherhood is probably the best 'game' in the series, i remember feeling very hopeful for the future of Assassins Creed during the first one. I remember thinking it was very cool that this AAA game was not afraid to let characters speak different languages while you travel around.

Most RPG's and FPS's just do not hold my interest at all anymore. The stories, the character and just a matter of time and patience to learn and play these games well that I just don't feel any reason to invest any time into or have the time to do so.

I actually turned away from playing a lot of RPG's and turned to FPS's this year. Not competitive multiplayer games, though. Just the campaigns. Moving from story to story and getting a blockbuster movie-type experience out of each game just works for me right now. But I can't get into RPG's anymore, either. I finished up Lost Planet tonight for the first time, for example. Interesting quote.
