So now the huzzle and buzzle with GOTY is done, I wanna know, what was your movie of the year 2013?

My MOTY goes to Prisoners. In my opinion, that movie had Superb acting and writing, a decent story with some nice twists. Now I'm not gonna write a long review and go any more in-depth than that, cause I suck at that stuff. But, yeah, Prisoners!

I guess I didn't see a lot of movies last year, and neither of them were all that great. The Hobbit and Star Trek Into Darkness weren't terrible, but not exactly what I'd like to be contenders for "best movie of the year", even though they were technically the best movies I saw last year (that were released in 2013).

Nothing really stood out this year. I have seen most of the big ones. I guess if I had to name a top 3 for 2013 it would be in no order:

  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • American Hustle
  • RUSH

Nothing good enough to call my favourite of 2013.

Pacific Rim! It broke my brain in ways I didn't think possible. Saw it five times in IMAX 3D. Just couldn't get enough.

I really liked Inside Llewyn Davis. Bittersweet darkly comic melancholy is my jam. The World's End was also great, for completely different reasons.

I'd also say Pacific Rim as well, I loved that way more than I probably should have.

The World's End was up there for me.

I guess mine would easily be Man Of Steel. I know many didn't like it for their own irrelevant reasons that could have been answered. But it was pretty damn great for me. Easily my favorite Superman movie.

It's a tough one. I really enjoyed Pacific Rim, but The World's End is near perfect. Wright, Pegg, and Frost can do no wrong.

Top 5 is probably something like this (no order though):

  • Prisoners
  • her
  • The Conjuring
  • Blackfish
  • Mud

Other good ones:

  • The World's End
  • This Is the End
  • Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Pacific Rim
  • Stoker
  • In a World

Haven't seen a lot of the "good films"/Oscar nominees though, didn't focus on movies as much as in years past. I focused way more on games and music in 2013.

Probably Pacific Rim or 42. I'll also note that I did not see many movies.

Also the one movie I really liked that I feel I'll get backlash here for enjoying is Anchorman 2. I have a feeling.

Mud is easily the best movie of the year, after that it gets pretty hazy, Prisoners, 12 Years A Slave, Rush, Gravity and American Hustle are all up there. Gravity wins cinematography easily. The Counselor has the best writing, shocking considering the screenplay writer (also the best living author). Oblivion was actually pretty damn good and Iron Man 3 was the funniest movie of the year.

@phantomgardener: I'm going with Prisoners as well. Don't forget about the cinematography too. The scene near the end where he's driving the cop car in the rain and it's just an intense flashing of red and blue and black was amazing.

The Place Beyond The Pines would be up there for me, as well as 12 Years A Slave. Wolf of Wall Street and Her both come in strong at the finish line as well. Still need to see Mud but I loved Take Shelter so I'm looking forward to it.

Here's a list of ten movies from 2013 I submitted over to a film site I write for. Not in any particular order:

A Talking Cat!?! (David DeCoteau)

Before Snowfall (Hisham Zaman)

Blue Is the Warmest Color (Abdellatif Kechiche)

You’re Next (Adam Wingard)

Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)

I Declare War (Jason Lapeyre)

Kiss of the Damned (Xan Cassavetes)

Maniac (Franck Khalfoun)

No One Lives (Ryûhei Kitamura)

This is The End (Evan Goldberg)

Now, this was at the very end of 2013, so I might have something to add there in say a month or two as I catch up further.

I only saw three movies last year in this order (not including direct-to-video stuff):

Monsters University (once, in theaters with coworkers, 3D)

Pacific Rim (couldn't see it in theaters, saw it about two or three times once it was out on Blu-Ray)

Gravity (once in theaters, 3D, would have liked to see it once or twice more)

If I ranked it, it would be in reverse, with Gravity ahead of Pacific Rim, then Monsters University.

1. Furious 6 (or Fast and Furious 6, but the opening title was just Furious 6). Rest in Peace, Paul Walker.

2. Pain & Gain

3. Thor: The Dark World

4. The Wolverine or maybe Lone Ranger. Nah, The World's End.

5. Iron Man 3

6. Then those other two I mentioned in number 4.

7. I dunno, Pacific Rim? Maybe Star Trek Into Darkness?

7 1/2. Kick-Ass 2

8. Elysium because that guy what played Wikus in District 9 was good in it. Sharlto something. Copely?

Dishonorable mention to Man of Steel for being disappointing and A Good Day to Die Hard for being the worst movie I've ever seen in a movie theater.

movies suck, like I spent 30 bucks on 3 tickets for Pixar Brave 3d, and the projection bulb was dim. Then the ending I saw the Steve Purcell name as director and that stung because I play monkey island to be inspired by his background work. No movies serious suck and cost too much money and half the time are just dumber then a bag of rocks when handling even complicated issues.

Unless they are Pacific Rim, then that's a wonderful delightful piece of everything that's good in the world.

Her. Absolutely brilliant.

Other standouts from 2013: The Wolf of Wall Street, You're Next, Captain Phillips, Pacific Rim, The World's End, Anchorman 2.

There are more movies I loved but I'll stop there. Man, there were some great movies in 2013.

I'd probably say Pacific Rim, if only because I don't think I was that happy seeing a movie as I was when I saw it. Frozen is my favorite Disney-owned movie of the year, with Saving Mr. Banks running a close second.

The Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug

Man, what a watch. Definatly ramped up the ante from the first film, and the escape from Mirkwood rivaled any of Jackson's work on LoTR.

I don't know what's my favourite 2013 film, as I haven't seen quite a few of the critically acclaimed ones. I know what's my least favourite though, and that is 2 Guns. I can't remember the last time I saw -- or more precisely, heard -- something this bad, and I'm not just talking about movies.

From the few movies I've seen in cinemas this year (mostly Blockbuster fare), I enjoyed The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug the best.
