So now the huzzle and buzzle with GOTY is done, I wanna know, what was your movie of the year 2013?

My MOTY goes to Prisoners. In my opinion, that movie had Superb acting and writing, a decent story with some nice twists. Now I'm not gonna write a long review and go any more in-depth than that, cause I suck at that stuff. But, yeah, Prisoners!

It wasn't World War Z.

I guess I didn't see a lot of movies last year, and neither of them were all that great. The Hobbit and Star Trek Into Darkness weren't terrible, but not exactly what I'd like to be contenders for "best movie of the year", even though they were technically the best movies I saw last year (that were released in 2013).

Nothing really stood out this year. I have seen most of the big ones. I guess if I had to name a top 3 for 2013 it would be in no order:

  • The Wolf of Wall Street
  • American Hustle
  • RUSH

Nothing good enough to call my favourite of 2013.

Pacific Rim! It broke my brain in ways I didn't think possible. Saw it five times in IMAX 3D. Just couldn't get enough.

#6 Posted by BaneFireLord (2908 posts) -

I really liked Inside Llewyn Davis. Bittersweet darkly comic melancholy is my jam. The World's End was also great, for completely different reasons.

Pacific Rim! It broke my brain in ways I didn't think possible. Saw it five times in IMAX 3D. Just couldn't get enough.

I'd also say Pacific Rim as well, I loved that way more than I probably should have.

#8 Posted by SideburnGuru (54 posts) -

The World's End was up there for me.

I guess mine would easily be Man Of Steel. I know many didn't like it for their own irrelevant reasons that could have been answered. But it was pretty damn great for me. Easily my favorite Superman movie.

It's a tough one. I really enjoyed Pacific Rim, but The World's End is near perfect. Wright, Pegg, and Frost can do no wrong.

#10 Posted by OmniscientCajun (115 posts) -

Top 5 is probably something like this (no order though):

  • Prisoners
  • her
  • The Conjuring
  • Blackfish
  • Mud

Other good ones:

  • The World's End
  • This Is the End
  • Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Pacific Rim
  • Stoker
  • In a World

Haven't seen a lot of the "good films"/Oscar nominees though, didn't focus on movies as much as in years past. I focused way more on games and music in 2013.

Great Great Great Film, Dicaprio is fucking great. I dont really like Jonah hill but holy shit he was great in this.

#12 Posted by psylah (2161 posts) -

Pacific Rim in IMAX 3D was amazing. I am upset that I can never see it like that again.

#13 Posted by DonutFever (3549 posts) -

Haven't seen The Wolf of Wall Street yet.

Pacific Rim and The World's End were really good.

Spring Breakers and Steins;Gate Fuka Ryouji no Deja Vu

#15 Posted by e30bmw (356 posts) -

her

Fast Six

Pacific Rim

Upstream Color

#16 Posted by MentalDisruption (1618 posts) -

Probably either Now You See Me or The Hobbit: Desolation of Smog.

#17 Posted by MocBucket62 (1135 posts) -

Probably Pacific Rim or 42. I'll also note that I did not see many movies.

Also the one movie I really liked that I feel I'll get backlash here for enjoying is Anchorman 2. I have a feeling.

#18 Edited by TheManWithNoPlan (5138 posts) -

Of the movies I watched last year, I'd say Pacific Rim.

#19 Posted by Demoskinos (14520 posts) -

I don't remember seeing that many movies in 2013 so.... Spring Breakers.

#20 Edited by Fredchuckdave (5182 posts) -

Mud is easily the best movie of the year, after that it gets pretty hazy, Prisoners, 12 Years A Slave, Rush, Gravity and American Hustle are all up there. Gravity wins cinematography easily. The Counselor has the best writing, shocking considering the screenplay writer (also the best living author). Oblivion was actually pretty damn good and Iron Man 3 was the funniest movie of the year.

#21 Posted by L1GHTN1N (436 posts) -

I only saw 4 movies that were released last year (that I can think of at least). So in order

  1. The Wolf Of Wall Street - Went in knowing nothing about it other than it was a little crude, ended up being my favorite of the year
  2. Pacific Rim - So stupid and so great I love it.
  3. Evil Dead - Evil Dead 1 is my favorite of the trilogy (1/2/Army of Darkness), and this remake nailed it. Some great gore and good atmosphere
  4. Monsters University - An average Pixar movie is still a great animated film.
#22 Edited by geirr (2469 posts) -

The one with the space stuff and Sandra Bullock.

#23 Edited by AlexW00d (6168 posts) -

I watched 5 films from 2013 . 4 were shite, one was really good. The really good one was New World, y'all should give it a watch.

#24 Posted by beepmachine (618 posts) -

@phantomgardener: I'm going with Prisoners as well. Don't forget about the cinematography too. The scene near the end where he's driving the cop car in the rain and it's just an intense flashing of red and blue and black was amazing.

The Place Beyond The Pines would be up there for me, as well as 12 Years A Slave. Wolf of Wall Street and Her both come in strong at the finish line as well. Still need to see Mud but I loved Take Shelter so I'm looking forward to it.

#25 Posted by Hunter5024 (5511 posts) -

Probably The World's End. I haven't seen everything I wanted to yet though.

#26 Posted by NoobSauceG7 (1230 posts) -

1. Kickass 2

2. Hunger Games 2

3. Anchorman 2

4. Pacific Rim

5. Monster's University

#27 Posted by Skytylz (4025 posts) -

I'm not gonna make a list, but 12 Years a Slave was pretty much flawless. Powerful movie. her was really good as well.

#28 Edited by VierasTalo (648 posts) -

Here's a list of ten movies from 2013 I submitted over to a film site I write for. Not in any particular order:

A Talking Cat!?! (David DeCoteau)

Before Snowfall (Hisham Zaman)

Blue Is the Warmest Color (Abdellatif Kechiche)

You’re Next (Adam Wingard)

Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)

I Declare War (Jason Lapeyre)

Kiss of the Damned (Xan Cassavetes)

Maniac (Franck Khalfoun)

No One Lives (Ryûhei Kitamura)

This is The End (Evan Goldberg)

Now, this was at the very end of 2013, so I might have something to add there in say a month or two as I catch up further.

#29 Posted by Superkenon (1353 posts) -

Huh. I don't think I watched any new movies last year.

#30 Posted by Kersplackle (15 posts) -

Her and Dallas Buyers Club are tied for my MOTY.

#31 Posted by SMTDante89 (2541 posts) -

I only saw three movies last year in this order (not including direct-to-video stuff):

Monsters University (once, in theaters with coworkers, 3D)

Pacific Rim (couldn't see it in theaters, saw it about two or three times once it was out on Blu-Ray)

Gravity (once in theaters, 3D, would have liked to see it once or twice more)

If I ranked it, it would be in reverse, with Gravity ahead of Pacific Rim, then Monsters University.

1. Furious 6 (or Fast and Furious 6, but the opening title was just Furious 6). Rest in Peace, Paul Walker.

2. Pain & Gain

3. Thor: The Dark World

4. The Wolverine or maybe Lone Ranger. Nah, The World's End.

5. Iron Man 3

6. Then those other two I mentioned in number 4.

7. I dunno, Pacific Rim? Maybe Star Trek Into Darkness?

7 1/2. Kick-Ass 2

8. Elysium because that guy what played Wikus in District 9 was good in it. Sharlto something. Copely?

Dishonorable mention to Man of Steel for being disappointing and A Good Day to Die Hard for being the worst movie I've ever seen in a movie theater.

#33 Posted by RonGalaxy (2842 posts) -

I didnt watch shit that came out this year. I usually wait for stuff to go on demand, which hasnt happened for a lot of the big movies that came out last year.

#34 Edited by The_Tolman (429 posts) -

1. 12 Years a Slave

2. The Wolf of Wall Street

3. Her

4. Nebraska

5. The World's End

6. Captain Philips

7. Pacific Rim

8. American Hustle

9. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smog

10. Prisoners

*I have yet to see Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club or Inside Llewyn Davis.

#35 Posted by itsmadness (142 posts) -

Gravity. It is amazing.

I can also attest that Prisoners was really good. Maybe my #2.

#36 Edited by Kaiserreich (681 posts) -

The World's End. Didn't see many movies last year.

#37 Posted by crithon (3059 posts) -

movies suck, like I spent 30 bucks on 3 tickets for Pixar Brave 3d, and the projection bulb was dim. Then the ending I saw the Steve Purcell name as director and that stung because I play monkey island to be inspired by his background work. No movies serious suck and cost too much money and half the time are just dumber then a bag of rocks when handling even complicated issues.

Unless they are Pacific Rim, then that's a wonderful delightful piece of everything that's good in the world.

#38 Posted by Pr1mus (3779 posts) -

Fast and Furious 6 of course.

#39 Posted by Redbullet685 (6021 posts) -

Her. Absolutely brilliant.

Other standouts from 2013: The Wolf of Wall Street, You're Next, Captain Phillips, Pacific Rim, The World's End, Anchorman 2.

There are more movies I loved but I'll stop there. Man, there were some great movies in 2013.

#40 Posted by SideburnGuru (54 posts) -

Still over here waving my "Man Of Steel" flag around.

Nearly forgot about Captain Phillips, Pacific Rim, The World's End, and Monster University. All up there as well... BUT.

Man Of Steel.

#41 Posted by Fredchuckdave (5182 posts) -

@SideburnGuru: I walked into and sat down in a currently running screening of Monster University; but it took me until I sat down to realize that I was in the wrong theater; I then walked over to watch Man of Steel.

#42 Posted by Milkman (16484 posts) -

Read this as Match of the Year and I'm going to answer it that way.

Sami Zayn vs. Antonio Cesaro 2 out of 3 Falls.

#43 Posted by HerbieBug (4195 posts) -

I don't watch movies anymore. It wasn't a conscious choice. I just tapered off then stopped some years ago.

#44 Edited by TheHT (10810 posts) -
  1. Frozen
  2. Inside Llewyn Davis
  3. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
  4. The World's End
  5. 12 Years a Slave
  6. Europa Report
  7. Prisoners
  8. Pacific Rim
  9. Insidious Chapter 2
  10. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - Descent
#45 Edited by Zalrus9 (107 posts) -

I'd probably say Pacific Rim, if only because I don't think I was that happy seeing a movie as I was when I saw it. Frozen is my favorite Disney-owned movie of the year, with Saving Mr. Banks running a close second.

#46 Edited by Guesty_01 (339 posts) -

The Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug

Man, what a watch. Definatly ramped up the ante from the first film, and the escape from Mirkwood rivaled any of Jackson's work on LoTR.

#47 Posted by postnothing (65 posts) -

I don't know what's my favourite 2013 film, as I haven't seen quite a few of the critically acclaimed ones. I know what's my least favourite though, and that is 2 Guns. I can't remember the last time I saw -- or more precisely, heard -- something this bad, and I'm not just talking about movies.

#48 Posted by Happenstance (459 posts) -

I didnt watch a lot of films last year it seems but I would probably give it to Captain Phillips.

#49 Posted by Stete (722 posts) -

Thor - The Dark World for me.

#50 Edited by Seppli (10251 posts) -

From the few movies I've seen in cinemas this year (mostly Blockbuster fare), I enjoyed The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug the best.
