Gravity.

But much like Pacific Rim, I am curious how that movie holds up on a tv. Part of what ruins Pacific Rim (aside from it's story) when you watch it at home is the lack of size. It's not a huge deal, but it's noticable enough to a degree. And one of Gravity's biggest strength in the theatre was the sense of scale of space. The 3D added so much depth and while I have a 3D tv, I am not sure even my 55" is large enough to give you that sense of scale that the theatre did. Either way, it was one of the best theatre experiences I've had in a long time.

Honorable mention; Evil Dead.

I haven't seen many films in the last year, so I'm going with Iron Man 3. Loved it.

Absolutely Her is my favorite, Wolf of Wall St is respectable second. I still haven't seen a few that I'm interested in yet (Inside Llewyn Davis, American Hustle, Captain Philips, and some others).

Her hit me really hard, made me think about myself in a way movies usually don't, and it was so well written and performed. It had me crying in the movie theater, and I don't think I've ever done that before either.

Pacific RIm was easily the most stoked I've been about a movie in years, and it didn't disappoint.

Rush was probably the best movie, though, because holy hell.. SO GOOD

Also, Clark Gregg's Trust Me was really great, Niuguruma Z was dumb as hell in the best way (it's about a zombie-killing teddy bear super hero...), and.. well, that new Harlock movie is absolutely gorgeous.

Have not seen a lot of the Oscar nominees yet, so my current favorite is Gravity followed by Man of Steel, and Catching Fire.

Gravity is definitely the best 2013 movie I've seen. I haven't seen too many, though. It stuck with me for weeks after seeing it, which, for me, isn't that common these days.

I didn't see a lot either, but I guess my vote goes to American Hustle.

Man, I didn't even see the Hobbit in theaters and I'm a huge Tolkien nerd. And I didn't see Gravity despite Children of Men being in my top 5. I make bad decisions.

A lot of big 2013 movies aren't even out in the UK yet (Her, Dallas Buyer's Club, Inside Llewynn Davis), but right now it's without a doubt The Wolf of Wall Street. Honourable mentions to 12 Years A Slave, Filth, Gravity, American Hustle and Pain & Gain (fuck you guys, it was a fun ride).

The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug. As per usual I rarely go to the cinema to watch movies, but for this one, I simply had to and I was not disappointed.

Star Trek Into Darkness and Catching Fire were the only two films I saw in theaters last year... so either one of those works for me.

I didn't watch a ton but from what I saw I enjoyed 12 Years a Slave, Pacific Rim, World War Z, Mud, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games Catching Fire, The Worlds End, and Star Trek Into Darkness. I technically saw Saving Mr. Banks this year but it was a 2013 movie so it counts and it was great. I missed The Wolf of Wall Street, Man of Steel, Captain Phillips, Gravity, and American Hustle. Iron Man 3 sucked my ass. From what I saw, 12 Years is probably the best. I found it to have a much more honest depiction of slavery than the much lauded (and overhyped) Lincoln from 2012.

I don't think I've seen any mentions for All is Lost, which is a shame, but I have heard from a lot of people that didn't like it.

A lot of the criticism I've heard comes from people who know about sailing or claim to know what he should have had / done in that situation; I guess I'm the uninformed audience the movie was catering to

I don't know. I work at a movie theatre so I see a fuck ton of movies all the time and All is Lost really stood out to me as being interesting.

It was like Gravity but in the ocean without everything I didn't like about Gravity.

I'm not even sure I watched any movie except Pacific Rim in all of 2013. That movie was good stupid fun though, even if all the drama was terrible. Wins by default.

@canteu: Well that depends, all of them had 2013 US releases, except Nymphomaniac, but since I saw that in 2013, I'll count it as a 2013 film. And that last sentence of yours, I'm not sure I understand.

Far and away The Act of Killing is the best film I saw this year. Truly shocking, brutal and immensely challenging.

Other great movies I saw this year:

  • Inside Llewyn Davis
  • Francis Ha
  • Fast and Furious 6
  • Pain and Gain
  • Man of Steel

Thor - The Dark World. In my opinion the best Marvel movie besides The Avengers. I laughed a lot, the action scenes were really fun and it's always great to watch Tom Hiddleston chew up the scenery. There also were a couple of really stunning and memorable shots in that movie so it takes the number one spot in a year that really wasn't a great year for movies, at least the ones I saw.

Iron Man 3 and maybe Pacific Rim are the only other movies that comes to mind when think about good movies in 2013. I still have to catch up and watch Wolf of Wallstreet, American Hustle, Gravity, Prisoners and 12 years a slave which I will do before the Oscars and those might be awesome but there were a few disappointments in 2013. I expected more from Into Darkness and the second Hobbit movie which were both still entertaining enough but didn't manage to be more than servicable. Now You See Me looked promising too but that didn't turn out so well either.

I'll list them in this order:

  1. Don Jon
  2. Ender's Game
  3. After Earth
  4. Rush
  5. Welcome To The Punch
  6. Before Midnight
  7. Iron Man 3
  8. Fast and Furious 6
  9. Captain Phillips
  10. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
  11. This Is The End
  12. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones
  13. The World's End
  14. The Wolverine
  15. Riddick
  16. Vikingdom

Before Midnight just didn't top my list because it is a depressing take on middle age and relationships, even if it is realistic.

I enjoyed Elysium, even though I felt like 1/3 of the movie was missing. Honestly though, I didn't think 2013 had a lot of movies I cared for, or were not very good. Although not a movie, 2014 got off to a good start with "True Detective".

I thought 2013 was a pretty shite year for film and most of you are confirming it with the outpouring of love Pacific Rim is getting.

A lot of movies that have been nominated for best film and what have you have yet to even come out here in the UK so I haven't seen the likes of Her, Inside Llewyn Davis etc so my favourite movies will have to be The Worlds End and Gravity although I do believe that Gravity simply won't hold up in a home environment. Watching it in the cinema and particularly IMAX just draws you in, especially with that sound track and sound design in general. I just want to point out that Sean Bobbitt really got robbed for a cinematography oscar. Hopefully it'll be recognised soon.

The list is fine, but coupled with "so much cheap and terrible taste," it sounds like he is so desperate to be highbrow it's funny.

Anyway, I haven't seen a lot of films that have hype surrounding them, but I did like Pacific Rim, The Counselor, and Blue is the Warmest Color.

I dont know if I could choose one. Her was a really interesting watch and worth the time.

Wolf of wall street is just really really funny and the acting in it is pretty great.

I was totally immersed in blue is the warmest colour and the story, and again, the acting was pretty great.

Even I can say its not the best film but Short Term 12 was pretty cool and I will always give Brie Larson my time.

Gravity was excellently directed/cinematography in that was superb.

The way way back was cute and worked like a great little miss sunshine style of film.

As a F1 fan, Rush was perfect for me, a great formula 1 film? its almost unheard of.

And I guess my 2013s 2012 movie of the year easily goes to cloud atlas, once i watched that on blu-ray finally i was mesmerised and found the book even better.

I would say my favourite would be Blue is the warmest colour, while very long, I was completely hooked into that film from the get go and very much enjoyed where the story took me.
