It's the middle of the year, what's your favorite songs so far?

Motion City Soundtrack - Happy Anniversary

An awfully depressing so, it sends shivers down my spine.

Silversun Pickups - Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)

Took time for me to find my groove with Neck of the Woods, but after sometime this has easily become my favorite SSPU's album.

I still need to get around to listening to that Silversun Pickups album.

There are a couple good ones on the new Metric record. I particularly like "Clone."

Nothing? I was just wondering cause I generally only listen to the music I like so I never really hear much different music, would have liked to hear what all the duders are into.

@HistoryInRust: Metric has a new album? Might need to check it out. As far SSPU, I think Neck of the Woods is their cleanest, if that makes sense, the tone of the album is fair consistent.

@SmasheControllers: I loved Carnavas but sort of fell off with their second effort.

  • Lambchop - "Gone Tomorrow"
  • Death Grips - "The Fever (Aye Aye)"
  • Azealia Banks - "1991"
  • Japandroids - "The House That Heaven Built"

Is it bad that the first thing that comes to mind for me is "Call Me Maybe"? That song is just so damn catchy and sticks out in my mind.

I don't keep up with music much but it would probably be either "Deth Starr" from Tenacious D or "Don't Leave Me" from Regina Spektor (although this isn't an entirely new song).

This year has been pretty good so far. Currently really loving Fiona Apple's "The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do". I'm just waiting for the new Phoenix and Shiny Toy Guns albums to come out though.

Van She - Idea of Happiness

Walk the Moon - Lisa Baby

Japandroids - The House that Heaven Built

Sigur Rós - Ekki múkk

Lifeformed - Cider Time (Dustforce Soundtrack)

because why not... Die Antwood - Fuk Julle Naaiers

and don't forget guys... KREAYSHAWN GOT ALL THE SYRUP

Yeah, that and probably El-P - "$ Vic/FTL (Me and You)"

#9 Posted by Mushir (2389 posts) -

I really love The Shins' new album, Port of Morrow. 40 Mark Strasse is probably favorite song of it.

Passion Pit's Take a Walk is also catchy as hell!

#10 Posted by Jolt92 (1603 posts) -

So awesome.

#11 Posted by owack6 (226 posts) -

Haven't been keeping up with current music that much lately but Capsule never disappoint.

Thats my summer song

PS: I can't stand metal as a genre, but there's a few artists there I still really like. Gojira is one of them among Mastodon and Devin Townsend.

Only 2012 release I'm listening to is the new Garbage album.

#15 Posted by dropabombonit (1492 posts) -

Metric's Lost Kitten. Although any song on the new album would be my songs of the year

#16 Posted by ShaggE (6814 posts) -

Tough choice from this album. I just love that Manson got his anger back in this song, though. And Twiggy just goes balls-out on that solo. Plus, Manson literally drops the mic at the end. What's not to love?

Just a great track.

I'm having a hard time with her new album (not in a bad way, it's just "challenging"), but this is just as strong an opening track as Fiona has ever had, ... Anyone sick of me talking about her yet? Haha.

I'll just put this here...

El-P made a classic album and there were a lot of good songs. One of the best is Oh Hail No,in which Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire's verse is just insane...

And then there's The Full Retard...

Other than El-P,Killer Mike also released a bunch of good songs,my favourite being Reagan

And finally a guy, that I've just found out about,Nacho Picasso. He's working with Blue Sky Black Death,a great producer duo,and released a great mixtape, which is pretty ignorant, but at the same time really good. It's like if Lil B had any talent and actually could make good songs with a good flow.My favourite from the mixtape was Swap 'Em Out,which weirdly hypes me up,although it isn't very energetic, except for the last like 30 seconds.

For me probably Grimes - Genesis

Nearly forgot about Sleigh Bells

Plus the Japandroids, Grimes and Sigur Rós songs already mentioned.

EDIT: I forgot a bunch of songs...

Sorry for the monster-post.

I don't really have a favorite song that came out this year but my favorite song I have heard this year is this for sure:

I've been listening to a lot this year, both 2012 releases and past ones I've missed but guess I'll just post some tracks from my fave 2012 album - mewithoutYou's Ten Stories.

The band blends post-hardcore with folk and art rock; with great instrumentation and some fantastic vocals shifting between, singing, quiet whispering and aggressive shouting. May take multiple listens to 'get it' but I when you do... WOW! They also like to occasionally make heavy musical shifts in the midst of a track, on this album Bear's and Nine Stories do the transition beautifully and have the best closers I've heard in quite a while.

The album itself is a concept album telling the story of an elephant derailing a circus train to free the animals... weird I know.

"If the weather ever withers up your vine, Jacob knows a ladder you can climb. If that old thorn is still buried in your side, Jacob knows a ladder you can climb. Well if your pacific rivers all run dry, their clouds will fill my loud corrupted sky, and if the pleasures of your heavens ever end, that very ladder just as well descends."

A song about a bear sacrificing himself to feed his starving Fox friend... amazing.

Flight Facilities - With You (sweet bit of indie dance; video has some very daft punk/megaman/astroboy vibes)

I also really liked this one. Hemisphere by Paradis, also has an interesting video

There's a bunch of other songs I've really liked so far this year, though a lot are remixes or just don't have interesting video clips to accompany them. :\

All of my favorite songs are pretty obscure.

You guys probably have never heard of them.

The Industrialist by Fear Factory. The song is fuckin fantastic along with the album

#44 Posted by SmasheControllers (2564 posts) -

It seems most duders taste in music is fairly similar.

#45 Posted by Teoball (651 posts) -

It's strange but most of my favorite songs this year has been Norwegian.

and it's all stuff that's on the top20 lists around here :/

Norwegian pop/rap with a little help from a swede.

How about some Norwegian reggae rap?

Donkeyboy is always good

I love this song for no reason. I think it is the best pop song on the radio right now. And I am normally an alternative rap/metal guy.

#47 Posted by HisDudeness (255 posts) -

By far my favorite album this year so far, some of the best techno (or electronic music in general) I've heard in a long time.

#48 Posted by blindisaac (141 posts) -

@zombiebigfoot: That voice

#49 Posted by _Zombie_ (1464 posts) -

@blindisaac: His vocal range is fucking inhuman.
