Well Shyamalan is doing a thriller/horror. i saw this trailer when I went to expendables today. I've loved shyamalan for so long. I know his popularity has been fading quite drastically over his past few movies, probably plumetting with airbender (I didn't see it). I loved the sixth sense, signs, unbreakable, even village. (yeah big whoop) Even some of the others I liked. I still have faith in him and this movie seems kind of interesting. It has a major possibility of fucking up, but I hope he does it well. What are your thoughts?
Thoughts on the "Devil" trailer and Shyamalan in general.
I think it's quite telling of the state of his reputation (at least with me) that my interest in this movie went from rather high to just curious when his name popped up. While I'm glad he's going back to his roots of sci-fi/horror after his string of rather disappointing films (Lady in the Water, The Happening, and Last Airbender) he has to prove himself again. If this comes out and is every bit as amazing as his earlier work then all will be forgiven. If not...well I have to continue wondering how he's getting money to make these things.
When I saw this before Scott Pilgrim, the whole theater (which was not very full) laughed when his name appeared. I think that's telling.
Every time I see this trailer in the theatre (which has been a lot lately unfortunately), the entire theatre busts out in laughter the minute that Shyamalan's name shows up.
I'm beginning to wonder if his name is actually somehow a subliminal anagram for "insert laughter here".

M. Night really has nothing to do with the movie but just the fact that his name is attached makes me think this movie will be utter shit.
Like all of his movies, the most enjoyment I get out of it is the trailer. Make it only an actual 1.5 hours movie and stuff bound to fall apart.
" I think it looks great! And I haven't seen any of Shyamalan's movies past The Village so his image hasn't been tainted... Yet "Yes! Wasn't the Village a good movie? It got a lot of bad reviews but I thought the idea and the revelation at the end was pretty cool.
Movie looks boring and predictable. I think he's a good director but his writers are usually very poor.
" HOW DOES HE STILL HAVE A CAREER "I would be questioning this as well, but if they're putting out trailers now, then this must have been in the works long before the atrocity of The Last Airbender was in theaters.
It's fascinating to watch stories from all over the film world about moans in theaters when his name pops up. I even managed to impress my girlfriend by starting a LOUD theater wide moan before Scott Pilgrim. Surely that kind of extremely evident public backlash is going to end up affecting him some how.
A good concept is meaningless in Shyamalan's hands. I predict this movie will be way too slow, trying to eek out suspense while the audience sits there, yawning and wishing they hadn't wasted 10 bucks. In other news, The Expendables FUCKING RULES.
Edit: So I realized just now he's not actually directing this, he's just a producer on it. Still, my hatred of Shyamalan stands.
When I went to the (packed) Scott Pilgrim showing, there was a huge sigh, and then bouts of laughter, when Shymalan's name was shown. I remember the same thing happening when I saw Inception. I was totally hyped by the concept of the film, but when he popped out I simply grimaced. I had seen the Last Airbender the last week.
Side note: Scott Pilgrim is AMAZING. Ignore the trailers, see it in a full theatre.
I don't know why people continue seeing his films. Every new one seems to be his "last chance", but people still flock and are then ultimately dissapointed. I had never seen one of his films in theatres, and I love Avatar, so I plopped down the cash to chill with my friends and give it a shot. It was the polar opposite of Scott Pilgrim. I was dragged into Scott expecting it to be garbage, and was amazed in the end. I went into the Last Airbender with a "pretty good" feeling, and came out thinking it was the worst film I'd ever seen.
Better as a director than as a screenwriter, unfortunately.
He's, to me, kind of like Chris Nolan in that both have a certain coldness and sterility to their screenplays, but Nolan manages to make it work while M. Night can never get past that weird "my characters are all wooden dolls totally bereft of human emotion" thing. Plus his story "hooks" have met with diminishing returns post-Signs, even including Signs, maybe.
Glad you like him, though. If you could stand Village and Happening, maybe you'll like this new one?
The claustrophobic area of an elevator might be interesting...and this seems more straight up horror than anything else he's done....Also, while you can fault him for several of his movies, Signs was a cinematic masterpiece...
Honestly, I was turned off to this film the moment his name came up. But having seen the trailer three or four times now (saw Pilgrim three times since release and Inception once, can't remember if it was included as a newer Inception preview) I started to heavily notice the obnoxious level of overacting. That, combined with an average idea (let me guess, you read No Exit recently?) and the rapidly diminishing quality of Shyamalan (fooled me once with The Happening, but never again) tell me that this movie is NOT going to be good. It will be funny, I guarantee it.
That said, if somehow the plot and script exceed expectations severely, the movie could be a launch for a decent return for The Twister. However, "DEVIL" is guaranteed to be bad simply due to its severe level of overacting.

" @arab_prince: I think someone here has a cultural bias :) "You lost me? He's indian if I'm not mistaken.
The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are genuinely two of my favorite movies. I still have faith in him as a director. Plus after seeing his self-produced films he made as a young lad, you can't help but love him; those films are terrific.
Yeah its funny how much people hate or dislike the guy. Seems like people either really enjoy his movies or they want him to go away.
This movie like most of his others looks highly intriguing and entertaining. I actually find him to be one of the elite directors and storytellers in films today, Scorsese is hands down the best but Shyamalan is way above average.
The woman, old lady, cop, and businessman are probably going to turn out to be devils since they are both unforseeable and the antithesis of evil. The woman is probably one because the camera shows her tits showing lust which is bad. Old Lady, well, everyone old lady is bad. Cop, he's a cop, It's M. Night. Businessman, secularized person that works for a company. Guy with the hoodie is a good guy. He turns out to be some kind of archangel hence the hood a la Tyrael from Diable. There goes to movie. :D
