Perception trumps intent. You can have fine intentions all day but the guy who wants to kick your ass doesn't care. Radio shock jocks do this shit all the time, its just about "give me attention". This is no different than Howard Stern testing vibrators on porn stars live. Its just a way to attract stupid people. No offense to stupid people, rock on, you make great fries. Just don't act like this is some smart satire they're dishing out.

In this thread: Dozens of people don't understand that it was too drawn out and too mean spirited in comparison to everything else they say, thus why people are angry about it.

@TheHBK: It's a joke. Do you honestly think the BBC would post real racism on one of their most popular TV shows? Do you really think the 3 guys REALLY ARE SAYING that ALL MEXICANS are fat and lazy? Do you REALLY think that? They're obviously playing against a common dated stereotype and the ridiculas backlash people are making is hilarious because all it shows is that the people being offended are too stupid to see through this light veil and are taking every word they say literally and strait to the heart.

You've got to man up and take a joke. If you can't bear to have 3 people have a joke about a false stereotype then I don't know what to say lol. Imagine if a tv show in China or Australia did a similar poke at a British stereotype no one in the UK would give a flying fuck and anyone who did deserves it anyway in my opinion.

Clearly top gear are the first to say  anything about negative in a negative way.

IT'S ABOUT CONTEXT. On the news is someone said it it'd be aweful... infact stratch that the news is racist it will prioretize British or it's nations news above anyone elses... take our 7/7 incident tragically people lost their lives, but in Iraq and Afganistan where more die they don't even receive 0.01% of the coverage how is that not racist?
Look, they are not advettising the idea of this what so ever, and as such I don't believe any complaints can be drawn. THEY actively make fun of themselves on the show ALL the time. These guys are some of the most well known people in the world, and I wonder why? Because in a world full of PC nonsense these guys are the only ones to say

'Yes there's a lot of wrongs in this world we know it, but don't deny you have at some point made a joke that is un-PC... we all have. So shut up and grow up. Yes it's 3 white males in a good position finacially, but watch British TV... there's entire shows attack males such as loose Women, no complaints yet all they seem to do is stereotype males.

And comparing this to racism and anti-sematic behaviour is stupid. THEY MADE A 2 MINUTE JOKE ABOUT A COUNTRY WHO'S STEREOTYPE IS THAT. It's like saying

'The welsh are sheep-shagers' (I'm welsh no offence taken)
'The Scottish aren't advanced but they'll fight to the death for the stuff they believe in'
'The French surrender but name me a country that produces better wine and culture'
'The Italians can't drive but be damn can they make a sports car'
'The German, they have little emotion but they will build you a bridge better than any other'
'Americans are fat, but they are loyal to the bone'
'The Chinease do the math'

I stereotypes ATLEAST 1/6 people yet, I don't consider myself racist. BECAUSE we ALL know none of it is true, the countries have only become FAMOUS for it. Live it... Jewish comedians say that they are funny is that not racist? I say live it up. Either retort with whit, say well atleast I'm not 'some stereotype of them' or just say so what and point our your countries positives. DON'T whine otherwise you get the support of all the people who hate PC jerks who turned Gingerbread man in gingerbread person, I'm surprised Ginger hasn't been banned.

" Oh man. loving this thread.   All the non-english people just cant seem to fathom that in England (with alot of the working class atleast), you can say pretty much anything you want, no matter how racist or crude it is, aslong as you are just joking about and not taking it seriously (and as long as your boss dosnt overhear, because even though he would laugh if he heard it out of work, rules in the workplace means hes not allowed to :/ ). Alot of the european people i work with have adjusted to this way of life over here aswell, they dont care if we rip into their country and people. What they said is nothing compared to the kind of conversations ive been in with friends, when i was in college and now in work, it just usually isnt on TV because the middle classes get touchy. But getting on the nerves of the touchy people is exactly what Clarkson and alot of other comedians/satirists like to do. Its funny to watch them squirm. "
So what you're saying is that it's okay to be racist in England? Cause I have never gotten that impression, I thought the majority of people over there were thoughtful and understanding of why certain words can be construed as more than 'just for the lulz'.

can't say i'm really surprised by the responses in this thread. the vast majority of posters here are sheltered nerds who probably have few minority friends, let alone poor minority friends. racism is a completely abstract concept to them that exists as a flaw of the individual, rather than a method of systemic oppression that millions of people deal with everyday.

compound this with the fact that nerds live in an idealized fantasy world where they are intelligent, urbane, funny, and independent freethinkers awashed in a sea of close minded, hysterical, irrational people incapable of critical thinking and the fact that racist jokes help them live out this fantasy by "pushing the envelope"(they're offended because they just don't get it, heh).

add in a life time of distorted social interactions, near constant rejection by mainstream society, and an undeserved ego, and voila, "its just a joke. you people need to get over yourselves and stop getting offended all the time"

also, racist humor is literally the lowest and laziest form a of humor. if you like it, you're probably some kind of unfunny idiot.

@actionTACO:
Yep, you got me there. I am totally unaware of how racism can affect peoples lives. After all, I didn't live in Zimbabwe for 15 years. You know, the one country with a dictator for a president that is as racist as Hitler. The one who systematically set his "war vets" upon many white farmers including some of my family friends.  One person I know was shot at, his dogs murdered and his home burnt down simply for not wanting to give up his possessions and way of life to a bunch of thugs with machetes and guns. We gave him shelter before he fleed the country.  White people are about as welcome in that country as Obama is in Bin Ladens bedroom. What I am trying to say I guess is not everyone on these forums has lived in their mums basement their entire lives and you shouldn't assume such things just to prove a point.

Despite experiencing such racism first hand I still support the notion that,  "its just a joke. you people need to get over yourselves and stop getting offended all the time" Some people just perceive outright racism out of everything and try to make a fucking big deal out of it.

also, racist humor is literally the lowest and laziest form a of humor. if you like it, you're probably some kind of unfunny idiot.

Racist humor is everywhere in the real world. How many times have you heard people just crack a joke about some racial stereotype? I do agree however that racist humor should not really be encouraged and this is definitely one of Top Gears less awesome moments.

This segment is pretty hurtful. It was especially hurtful when the commentators made a joke about the supposedly painful realization of waking up and realizing that you are a Mexican. I understand that it can be said in good fun without the intent to insult anybody, but people have to realize that merely because someone has good intentions does not necessitate that their actions result in a positive outcome. Sure you may find it funny, but you find it funny at the expense of everyone else being laughed at.

For people saying everyone needs to grow up and chill out, there needs to be a little more empathy. I'm not suggesting everyone has to suppress their thoughts and feelings, but rather people need to educate themselves. It's all too easy for people from privileged groups to ignore the realities people from disadvantaged groups face. I'll give a few examples:

Unfortunately I don't have specific information on white vs. mexican relations but the following accurately describe relations between privileges of dominant groups vs. disadvantages of lower status groups, and I can provide citations for my information if they are requested.

White privilege vs. Black disadvantage

  • White's are less likely than blacks to be arrested; once arrested, they are less likely to be convicted , and once convicted, less likely to go to prison, regardless of the crime or circumstances. Whites, for example, constitute 85 percent of those who use illegal drugs, but less than half of those in prison on drug-use charges are white.
  • Whites are more likely than comparable blacks to have loan applications approved and less likely to be given poor information or the runaround during the application process.
  • Whites are charged lower prices for new and used cars than are people of color, and residential segregation gives whites access to higher-quality goods of all kinds at cheaper prices.
  • Whites can choose whether to be conscious of their racial identity or to ignore it and regard themselves as simply human beings without a race.
  • etc...

These examples are not exclusively related to matters of race, they are also present in other intergroup relations namely:

 Males privilege vs. Female disadvantage
  • In most professions and upper-level occupations, men are held to a lower standard than women. It is easier for a "good but not great" male lawyer to make partner than it is for a comparable woman.
  • Men can generally assume that when they go out in public, they won't be sexually harassed or assaulted just because they're male, and if they are victimized, they won't be asked to explain what they were doing there.
  • Male representation in government and the ruling circles of corporations and other organizations is disproportionately high.
 Heterosexual privilege vs. Homosexual disadvantage
  • Heterosexuals are free to reveal and live their intimate relationships openly---by referring to their partners by name, recounting experiences, going out in public together, displaying pictures on their desks at work---without being accused of "flaunting" their sexuality or risking discrimination.
  • Heterosexuals can rest assured that whether they're hired, promoted, or fired from a job will have nothing to do with their sexual orientation, an aspect of themselves they cannot change.
Disability disadvantage
  • Nondisabled people can live secure in other people's assumption that they are sexual beings capable of an active sex life, including the potential to have children and be parents.
  • Nondisabled people have greater access to education and health care. They are less likely to be singled out based on stereotypes that underestimate their abilities and be put in "special education" classes that don't allow them to develop their full potential.

The truth is a lot of these things are funny because of their shock value. What a lot of people don't realize is that at an unconscious level by saying these jokes and defending these jokes they are very likely reinforcing implicitly held negative attitudes (thoughts held at the subconscious level) towards the group being made fun of. Implicitly held attitudes are hard to detect specifically because we don't think about them at a conscious level, but they can still affect our actions.  In the context of this TV show the white males who come from a historically privileged group, are making derogatory comments at the expense of a group which was not only conquered and dominated by white males (Spaniards) but is still in many cases under heavy if not dominating influence from the United States.

It's important to note, that by saying these things I'm not accusing all whites of being racist, or all males of being sexist, or all heterosexuals of being homophobic or all non disabled people of holding ableist attitudes. I'm simply trying to say that it's easy to forget or not even think about these realities when it is not your reality.

A lot of people may not like or even agree with these statements but there has been a lot of psychological research done on this topic, if there are doubts I can reference some psychology experiments that look at these issues along with the relevant statistical data.

For anyone interested in more detail on implicitly held negative attitudes I can direct you to this interesting website:

I think that's the point he was trying to make. I believe he wanted to say that this would have caused a lot more controversy had Jews or Blacks been the topic of conversation. I don't believe it was his intention to imply that Mexicans have had comparable experiences to Jews and Blacks.

I do believe he was trying to say racism is wrong and people may be ignoring it on the basis that Mexicans haven't faced similar injustices.

So what we learned from this discussion:

Maybe you guys are just a lot stupider than we give you credit for. That's probably it. The Top Gear crew would be the first guys to tell you they are three middle class buffoons acting like idiots, doing what they do- carrying with them the opinions, prejudices and way of thinking of their target audience and people they represent. In my opinion at least, they're funny, harmless, and some of the most charismatic people on TV (at least here in the UK).

Take it or leave it I guess.

(although yeah, they did take it a little far this time- they apologised for it though. To say it's the worst show evar over this is...well...)

Its just a joke Zimbo. Don't flip out and make another embarrassing alt, okay? When I say its just a joke, that you guys are inbred to the point that you need nanny cams to keep track of of your toothless peasants as they drunkenly slog home to fuck their sister and watch Top Gear, I'm kidding. Its subtle tongue and cheek. When you make the most obvious joke ever, its tongue in cheek, guys. Don't be a PC pussy bitch about jokes okay. Empathy is just some PC concept invented by people who actually interact with people different than them. Real men have no need for that.

A lot of white man's guilt up in this thread. I'd care about something important, like the teaparty terrorists instead.

That's why they are internationally famous and you are not.  You aren't funny.  Oh and FYI there's a lot more mileage in child molestation humour than orphan jokes, just a little tip for you since your high-horse routine is becoming unbelievably dull.

This land of such dear souls, this dear dear land,
Dear for her reputation through the world,
Is now leased out, I die pronouncing it,
Like to a tenement or pelting farm:
England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself.

No one watches Top Gear because they like cars.  People watch for the British wit, because it's one of the funniest shows on television right now.

The American Top Gear is utter trash...  They completely missed the point of the show.  They focused too much on cars, and not enough on James running into a bridge while driving a sailboat-car.
