What is your favorite sub-genre of Science Fiction?
"Thrawn said:"TekZero said:Yeah. They had no names in the book.""Sir_Ragnarok said:"I'm a sucker for Post-Apocalyptic fiction."
Check out "The Road" by Carmac McCarthy if you haven't already. Great read."
was that the one with the father/son?"
ok, i've read that. pretty good, but i like no country for old men better (the book verson of course, even though the movie was prett y good)
Yeah, The Road was alright. I'm not a huge fan of Cormac McCarthy, though. His sentences don't have a very consistent rhythm. He likes to avoid punctuating sentences to give the appearance of style, but it's really just a nuisance.

My old chemistry teacher would bitch-slap you for saying that.

To qualify: I think McCarthy's older stuff--things before and around Blood Meridian--is much better than his more recent work.
Blood Meridian is a really fucking good book.
"I don't know, he was a strange guy. His favorite musician is Tom Waits, if that says anything about him."Tom Waits is fucking awesome, that's why. Haha.
I think I like hard science fiction the most, but anything that doesn't get too magical gets an automatic plus for me... tnough the magical stuff has a place too, I guess.
I think Tom Waits is cool, if that says anything about me. I kinda also had trouble with Cormac's punctuation tendencies. I thought it was kinda neat to start, but then I realized he does this all the time. Sometimes it's just about communication; when the style gets in the way and keeps making you wrestle with the book's style instead of its ideas, you might be doing something wrong :)
On post-apocalyptic fiction:

I'm a big fan of anything similar to the Stargate franchise (Stargate Atlantis to be precise)...so, I guess that'd be what? Military science fiction? Or so says wiki... Actually, anything set in space with advanced technology (hyperdrives and so on) does a good job of pulling me in.
