i listen to all genres really. recently mostly into black metal, but i jump from genre to genre on a regular basis. heres a thing from my last.fm profile.

the older i get, the more variety i like. i was born and raised on rock n roll, but i think probably every genre has something to offer. i'm generally of the mind that if there's a form of musical expression that i don't care for, but nevertheless has an ardent audience- i'm probably disliking it because i don't understand it, not because there's something implicitly inferior about it. you just have to find the flavor that works for you.

case and point- 14 year old me probably wouldn't have ever imagined being turned on to country/rockabilly. but then johnny fuckin cash happened. lesson learned: don't judge a tradition of music merely by it's poppiest incarnation.

Anyway, every day I listen to Tool, Kendrick Lamar, Opeth, Led Zeppelin, Skrillex, Eminem, Ne Obliviscaris, Slayer, Korn, Black Sabbath, Death, Poets of the Fall, Liz Phair, Katy Perry among many others.

I see the genius and/or emotion and/or beauty in most 'good' music, regardless of the genre.

Throwing gang signs with rap then headbanging with metal, why not?

Cage and Varese are definitely Indie. Bartok is Rock (at least string quartet 4, movement 5 is though he has been known to rock elsewhere as well) and Debussy is, uhh, Easy Listening...

Let's see, I like Rap, Hip-Hop, Trance, Dubstep, EDM, Trap Step, and a little bit of rock here and there. I never really go for pop though. It all sounds like the same thing.

What the eff is chillstep?

All kinds! Dubstep, Rock, Pop, New Age, Celtic, Easy Listening, Orchestrated, Video Game, Dance, 70s, 80s, and a little bit of blues and jazz.

Err, "other" was kinda missing as an option. None of the ones listed are what I'd count my favorite genres, though I guess many of the bands could be considered indie under the original definition of the word, i.e., self-released/independent artists, rather than a "genre".

Some of the genres I'm fond of are: post-punk, industrial, punk/crust, no-wave, black metal, ambient, EBM, IDM, some psytrance, drum 'n bass/jungle, early 90's rave stuff, acid house, trip hop, noise, power electronics, Berlin school of electronic music, krautrock, that distinctive early 90's demoscene style and quite a lot of video game music.

I guess some of my favorite bands/artists would be µ-Ziq, Chrome, Esplendor Geométrico, Death in June, The Tear Garden, Front 242, Public Image LTD, Vangelis, Einstürzende Neubauten, Test Dept and Fever Ray. (obligatory last.fm link)

Metal, Rock, Post-Hardcore, Hardstyle, Hardcore, Indie Rock and Acoustic.

Rock, electronic and 90s hip hop for me. I like some Metallica too, but I've largely stopped listening to metal.

Noise Rock, Grunge and Shoegaze mainly, I'll listen to most every genre though.

Uh, I like more than 1 genre of music guy.

Lately I've been all about hip-hop and dance music but I've also been on this really weird pop-punk kick lately. Lots of Good Charlotte and Zebrahead and self loathing.

I listen to everything, but gun to the head style, I'd say hip hop is definitely in me almost 24/7.

I think I need to get myself checked because I don't know my partner's history.

I agree with your first two sentences, but there is no way I'll vote for One Direction, sorry. Anyways, I voted rock because I love classic rock, but I also like chillout, blues, jazz, and some rap and country.

You gots chillstep on there but you don't have Hip Hop?! I voted for rap as that most closely resembles the hip hop I listen to. I like poetic lyrics and the like. What rap is now and what it has been for the last 5 or so years has been pretty bad.

Man, genre's are a crazy way to define your tastes. You just need a soul-less shit filter. If something has merit and an artist, however skilled or practised made it then it's bound to have something to it that warrants attention. If it's made purely for attention, fame or cash it's probable that it feels hollow and worthless.

Anyway, I heard Bad Religion when I was 12 and was forever changed:

I listen to a lot of stuff, mainly things that can be derived from Rock. Thrash Metal will always have a special place in my heart, and along with Black Metal and NWOBHM I find to be the best subgenres of Metal.

Right now, I'm way into Punk and things that derive from it. Been listening to a lot of Hardcore and Third Wave Ska. Been listening to a lot of the Funkcore/Skacore band The Adequate Seven. They unfortunately broke up several years ago, but their stuff is fantastic.

Jazz and Orchestral music. The rest of what I listen to is at random.
