Apparently, AVG or Avast! Antivirus is meant to be good as antivirus software, and they do have free versions.

As for anti-spyware programs, you could try Spybot Search and Destroy or AdAware.

I use AVG, but it has not updated for the past few months (along with Windows Defender), and I did this browser-based scan (from Microsoft), and it managed to get rid of this trojan. No idea of it was Conficker, but updating AVG today and Windows Defender (without directory files) kicked ass. Oh, I like AVG, by the way. Seems like everyone is in the spyware discussion, because of this virus.

I'm using Comodo Internet Security right now, it has AV, Firewall and other crap in one package. It's not as automatic as some of the better soft and not sure how efficient it is, but at least it's free. For spyware I've found SuperAntiSpyware to be great, for proper clean up it's best to do a manual scan with different ones.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2008/2009 is the best security suite available nowadays but it's only for Windows.
You HAVE TO pay a license or a key to use it.

Spybot is also very productive with Kaspersky!

As someone who pays a lot of attention to security (I listen to Security Now!) I would recommend AVG for the occasional sweep, NOD 32 if you plan to run it all of the time, and Windows Defender as your spyware program. Also download the Microsoft MSRT, which will quickly remove a lot of infections. It runs regularly in Vista behind the scenes on its own.

Steve Gibson's a security genius - I've learnt so much from his stuff.

Dear Lord, Norton is terrible. I've run into so many issues using it.

I recommend AVG for antivirus, and Spybot Search & Destroy for spyware and etc. Ad-Aware is also good.

For commercial solutions I would say. Eset Nod32, Kaspersky, BitDefender, Avira Antivir any of them should serve anyone quite well. For free programs you have AntiVir free, Avast or if you are an avid opensource advocate you can always try ClamWin. as for asntispyware, Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware are the only ones I have any experiance with. They both did a good job though. You should also consider a firewall, two good ones are Outpost and Zygate.

But I do recommend you try a Linux dist as your main desktop os and having windows for games, some easy ones are OpenSuse, Zenwalk, Ubuntu and Mandriva. Check them out!

AVG or Avast.
If you are worried about that concflicker virus. I think its all a big hoax. I thought I had it yesterday because nothing would update and my internet wouldn't work either. (Microsft and Virus wouldn't update too.) Waited until today and everything is fine.
