Poll Do you take someone less seriously when they use the term "Xbone"? (399 votes)

Yes 34%
No 66%

I don't know about you guys, but at this point I'll often stop reading a forum post if I see this term being used. Not everyone seems to use it to imply negativity, but even so, it's an annoyingly ugly term that just screams "Let's try to be clever on the internet!" Key word, of course, being try.

If you legitimately believe this term to be a good shorthand for Xbox One, then, well, I'm sorry—it's really not.

Perhaps I just hold words to too high a standard.

You picked a bad day to make this thread, didn't you? It's gonna be Xbox180 from here on out.

But to address you question: I like the term Xbone. People naturally contract a name when they can and this one works terribly well. It's almost like it was intended. The actual name is simply bad. Even if you don't like "Xbone" "Xbox One" sounds/reads worse to me. It's the same with Playstation. On it's own it sounded fine but Playstation 2 and 3? Sounds dull. Initialising the names then made it sound somewhat better and, importantly for the internet, gave you good shorthand. Losing two letters isn't as much of a deal but it still tidies up the name, makes it one word and can be used without sounding positive or negative.

People could go for XB1 but then you have the PS4. That's +3 on the XB. It's also not the first XB which makes things kind of silly.

On the whole the proper name is terrible and Xbone just feels better to a lot of people. Can't blame them for MS giving their console a bad name and reacting. If you're letting a term like this affect your opinion of what they're saying and how seriously you take what they say then you're already taking thee whole concept far too seriously.

No, the Xbox One.
It goes Xbox, 360, then Xbox One.

When spoken out loud I call it "The One" I know it's not funny, but Microsoft's forced my hand (or tongue but that also sounds wrong) It really is a terrible name. I do take people less seriously when they say "M$" though as it's meant to be insulting. I'm not insulting the console whenever I call it the "XONE" or whatever the hell people would prefer it to be called. Just the name.

I say Xbone, and now that they're getting rid of the DRM stuff I'll probably be buying an Xbone at some point. The only time I might not say Xbone is if I'm on a date and the girl asks about hobbies, I would avoid telling her I have an Xbone...

@irvandus: ....Okay, let's break this down.

Xbone = 5 characters.

Xbox One = 8 characters (if you count the space).

So you're saying that an additional three keystrokes is just too much?

LET'S break this down is only one singular keystroke less than LET US break this down, do we disregard the opinions of the complete strawheaded imbecile that first commited to writing LET'S on the grounds that the extra effort was too much?.

People will generally look to abbreviate and shorten terms they feel they may use often, in the case of hardware like the consoles it also implies knowledge of the subject, familiarity and helps keep a casual bonhomie about the discussion.

People who use it as a "Sick burn duder!" however should be shot at high speed into a hard surface in front of their families.

My brother says "The One", and every time he says it I say, "Don't call it that." As long as people don't call it that, I'm cool. Also, I thought Xbone was very accurate considering all their DRM nonsense. I'll probably keep calling it that or "the 180", cuz that's really funny to me.

@likeassur: Contractions, abbreviations even colloquialisms all just stem from people taking the language and making it more concise or making it fit their linguistic usage more comfortably. To limit language variations to definitions as set down in grammatical teaching is far too limiting for the world we live in. This is where society takes a stand and makes a new collins accepted contraction! we here at microsoft are pleased to unveil.... The Xb'ne!

I just think Xbox one is just an awful name that doesn't flow and in my local accent tends to sound particularly odd also due to the use of the word 'one' interchangably with 'thing' in my area of Wales.

I tend to lean towards X1 because it's short. Not really less serious, but I take the explanation that it's only being used because it's shorter less serious. If that's the case, X1 is about as short as it gets. On GB it works especially great for thread titles.

No, It's usually the tone of post overall that matters. If someone references to Xbox One as Xbone, I don't mind. Usually posts I ignore are just ones like "Xbone sucks lol" it doesn't matter if it would say "Xbox One sucks lol", it's still just as pointless.

"Gaystations" and "Shitboxes" are different thing though.

I usually refer to it as X1.

I've got used to calling it "The new Xbox" since no one else I know understands what I'm taking about if I call it anything else. I don't care what anyone calls it as everyone else understands the term.

In fact, I've always thought that "Xbox" was one of the worst names of any video game console ever; so I see Xbone as a sizeable improvement.

No, I just don't care what they call it. It is all in how YOU interpret the nickname.

- If you feel confident in the system, you would see XBone as a sign of affection like any nickname.
- If you feel deep down MS has messed up and the system will be marred than, guess what, you will always see XBone as an insult.

But, it is about your interpretation of it. You give it power and you decide what it means.

It's the Xbone, Xone sounds stupid and Xbox one is too long.

Honestly, the system name is hard to take serious at all. I still keep thinking of the actual xbox 1, should have just called it xbox.

I say Xbone because it is only one more letter than Xbox. Really though if you feel threatened by how someone abbreviates a video game console perhaps you should step back and take a break from video game forums.

X is a great letter, and bone is a great word. What some see as a slight to me sounds kinda badass.

I don't even say it in jest it's just the easiest way to say it.

X = X + B = Box + one = XBone.

not necessarily true. I just say X1. take out the b. or just go full retconn and say xbox

Anyways more to the point, i dont really take people less seriously, but it sure helps figure out what kind of person im dealing with. Same with the M$ nonsense. Its just people who dont know what they want as far as im concerned. They complain, then the people listen and change the product, then complain some more. Makes no sense

No Microsoft brought in on themselves with a shitty name that can be easily be shortened to Xbone.

The only reason it has such strong negative connotations outside the name is because Microsoft fucked up their messaging about the system completely. They did just about everything wrong so now when someone says Xbone it's no longer just a comment on the name but a comment on the entire way Microsoft has handled the system.

And this is coming from someone who's had one pre-ordered since they opened up pre-orders and done most of my current gen console gaming on the Xbox 360.

Only if it's included in a sentence such as "I think the XBone looks great!" or "TheXBone is way better then the PS4!"
