Faulty disc drive, not amused

Looks like I'm the first to post on this forum as being a victim of the faulty disc drive.

I insert a disc, any disc be it a game or a Blu-Ray, only to be greeted with a grinding noise and eventual disc read error message.

This was post day one update and post installation of the Blu-Ray player. There are videos on YouTube of fellow sufferers. Time to pack it up and ship it back to where it came. It's times like this i wish it was store bought instead of internet bought as i won't get my replacement this side of the PS4 release (i'm in UK)

Where did you buy it? I know places like best buy take returns for online sold items (I brought some ram back to best buy a few months after I bought it from them online and they took it without issue).

Also, that sucks. Sorry man :(

The grinding noise these faulty boxes are making is horrible. Hope you manage to get a replacement sorted out quickly. Do they hold a bit of stock back to replace faulty items?

This is what I want to know as well. The only discs I'll be putting in my Xbox One are probably going to be BluRay movies. If I were to get an Xbox with a busted drive I'd probably just wait for the Finnish launch to get it replaced.

I suspect the discs are probably fine. I had a similar disc drive problem on one of my many 360 units, and even though it sounded terrible, it never did anything bad to the disc.

@pie: Yeah, but I think that was a different disc drive issue. Those problems were caused primarily (although certainly not always) by moving the console while the disc was spinning.

I got rid of my 360 because the drive was damaging discs. And no, I wasn't moving it.

Hopefully they can do quick replacements like Sony has done so you can start enjoying your console! My PS4 came broken from amazon but a Sony outlet store had prepared for it, Sony had sent them extra units just in case of broken ones. Hopefully Microsoft did something similar with retailers!

Sucks , my PS4 was busted out of the box. My only consolation was that I also had an Xbox one ordered. If it's broken too then I'll be real angry. Do you have a PS4 coming next week?

I'm kind of scared mine is going to have this. Amazon sent mine in a box with like 2 of those bubble things. The box had a bumpy ride to my home.

Add my name to the list with drive issues. I just tried popping in a DVD and it chattered at me like a rabid squirrel (no disc damage). Good thing I had planned on going digital this gen - box works great otherwise. I'll get a coffin once this is sorted out, but I'm having fun in the meantime - AC4 and KI are great.

@sanj: Discs are not damaged thankfully. Because it was late afternoon when I tested it, they can't get a courier out to pick up until Monday. Then they have to test it and send a new one or refund me. Either way we are talking Thursday at the earliest if I'm lucky.

Hopefully my PS4 on Friday will be ok. Fingers crossed!

Add me to the list. I get the clicking sound and no discs are recognized. Better yet, Microsoft phone support is done for the day so I'm sitting in a chat window just waiting for someone to appear. *sigh*

I'm not quite ready to go all digital yet, so it looks like it's lots of Killer Instinct for me this weekend.

Not sure of the truth of it, but was just told by Amazon that they were contacted by Microsoft and instructed to NOT replace broken consoles themselves and have anyone with a broken console to contact MS to go through their support system...

Update after typing with MS support for the last few hours: They are processing "Advance Exchanges" whereby they will send a new console prior to the defective console being shipped back. Current estimate is 3-5 days to receive a replacement console.

@oginor: I would definitely do that. At first, the support rep played like she had no idea what I was talking about but, after a little pressing, admitted they are all very well aware of the problem and working to solve it without too much bad press. Seems like the best of both worlds if you were going all digital anyway...

@synful303: Definitely on the digital end of the spectrum for this generation. It's funny, if it wasn't for the internet, I probably never would have checked the drive and could have gotten a year or two down the line before even realizing it sounded like an angry rodent. It works great otherwise (knock on wood) - I really enjoy it.

This will be real interesting to follow. I feel I'm reading more about this than the blue light, but maybe that's just the internet. But both IGN and Eurogamer ended up with broken consoles.

Was able to get through to MS phone support today and they are indeed processing advance exchanges. New box should be here in 3-5 business days (hopefully before the Thanksgiving holiday) and the faulty one goes back to them. This does require a $500 hold on your account, so it's not for everyone, but it will get me a functioning disc drive a lot quicker. A bit of a bummer, but what are you gonna do?

Seems weird that the drives are failing. Looking at the tear downs of both machines, the PS4 has it fancy custom small drive which you might think would have launch gremlins but the xbox one has a standard looking Lite-on drive.
