Fumito Ueda Says The Last Guardian Still in Development

The Last Guardian is scheduled for a 2012 release, but it's anyone's guess if that will still happen.

We still don’t know if Fumito Ueda is an employee at Sony anymore, and while the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus designer has started talking on Twitter again, he hasn’t touched upon the rumors yet.

Instead, Ueda has simply reminded the world about Ico’s coincidental 10th anniversary (today!), and promised development on the oft-delayed The Last Guardian continues. He did not talk about his role on the project, but this may provide some hope.

Perhaps Ueda even nodding in the direction of the rumors is all we need to know for now.

@CJduke: when Sony starts caring about it

#6 Posted by Jayzilla (2580 posts) -

lolz. wasn't this game announced in like 2008?

#7 Posted by Fox318 (54 posts) -

@CJduke: When the PS4 is out.

#8 Posted by Venatio (4495 posts) -

Playing SotC for the first time on PS3 right now and I can't wait for The Last Guardian to be released, didn't really care before

#9 Posted by JDillinger (172 posts) -

What clash? Are you making things up Patrick?

#10 Posted by RagingLion (1378 posts) -

@drowsap: I would have thought it was more likely that Sony really cares about The Last Guardian coming out but Team Ico want to make sure it meets up to their high standards and so are holding Sony off of forcing them to release it too quickly. Team Ico is surely Team Ico and they wouldn't want Sony hiring a whole load of unsustainable people to finish it quicker that might not carry their philosophy.

That's the easy explanation to imagine for the differences. Might be a whole lot different than that.

I swear most, if not all Japanese games are announced, pondered with, then development began soon after, stop it Japan.

#12 Posted by Buttmonk3y (137 posts) -

I can wait for this game... Its gonna be worth it!!!

#13 Posted by Afroman269 (7387 posts) -

I still don't think this is a game.

#14 Posted by NipCrip66 (128 posts) -

I was really gutted when this game was delayed until 2013 but now I'm just praying they don't screw it up (and that the Guardian doesn't die although I know it will).

#15 Posted by Loyal_Dragoon (118 posts) -

Hopefully this game will release next year.

#16 Posted by Pliskin (8 posts) -

I'm sure Sony is tightening the screws on the team to put out an update, but I want these guys to take as long as needed to make this a game that lives up to the almost unreachable hype it's going to have surrounding it. I'm glad to hear that Ueda's still got his hands on it and hasn't been distracted by side projects yet.

#17 Posted by Commisar123 (1798 posts) -

I don't think that game is real anymore

#18 Posted by Sweep (9076 posts) -

If this is cancalled then I'm going to be gutted.

doesn't Sony have numbers on how well the ICO/SOTC collection sold this year?   I'm sure it did well enough to spur lots of interest in Last Guardian... They'd be idiots to cancel it and not release it.

#20 Edited by ProfessorEss (7580 posts) -

@Marz: Does anyone know how well Ico/SotC did? I'd be curious to see the numbers to see if this has anything to do with this new (rumoured) rift.

I'm guessing iffy sales of that collection would raise questions within Sony as to how much more budget they should give TLG.

#22 Posted by AmericanNinja (157 posts) -

The rumor is false he did not leave Sony.

Phew, for a minute there, I lost myself,

it's sold about half a million since september, for an HD remake that is actually really great.

Please don't leave Fumito, you're half of the reason I'm a Sony fanboy.

If there weren't something to it, it would have been straight up shot down by now. Maybe it will be false, maybe they won't say anything until they've worked it out, but something's up.

Where is today the tenth anniversary? The Giantbomb page says US release September 24 2001. Was the US version first for some bizarre reason?

this, that is not a happy relationship. If its not broken now, it dosent have too long left to run. At best departure from Sony post release.

Oh thank God. I can now be taken off of suicide watch.

Yes US release was first that's why that version had the horrendous cover art.

If we see this game it won't be till 2014 I bet. Lucky if it comes out at all. I still want to play it, but to be honest it has fallen from my anticipated games list.

#32 Posted by Humanity (10703 posts) -

Hopefully they'll work a bit on the creature. The rooster legs are really not doing it for me with the beak action and ugh.. if it dies at this point, hey, no biggie..

#33 Posted by Creamypies (4105 posts) -

To be fair, the game will sell for shit. Can't really blame Sony for being super nonchalant about it.

#34 Posted by ZmillA (2304 posts) -

Need this game.

#35 Posted by Arjuna (889 posts) -

I'm confident that the disputes between Sony and Ueda can be settled amicably, and The Last Guardian can continue its development to completion.

#36 Posted by Aleryn (706 posts) -

It'll be cool WHEN this comes out. I doubt I'll enjoy it as much as Shadow of the Colossus based on the escort vibe I'm getting from it that resembles Ico. However that'll be great for Ico super-fans. ... when it [eventually] comes out.

#37 Posted by algertman (852 posts) -

He's off to work for Nintendo.

#38 Posted by Catarrhal (864 posts) -

@NipCrip66: It was only delayed to 2012, not 2013. Obviously, no one knows for sure, though.

I have no clue where the escort vibe is at all...a dragon sized dog-griffin needs escorting? not so much.

#40 Posted by dvorak (1497 posts) -

The conversation probably went like this.

Sony: Is it a game? This dragon dog/cat bird thing in the trailers?

Ueda: Well...

Some guy off in the corner: HOT SCOOPS! *leaves room to go post on the internet*

Ueda: Yeah, I guess so.

Sony: OK, thanks.

Normally this is how these internet rumors start.

Patrick, you might want to enlighten those of us who don't know what clash you're talking about.

#42 Posted by toots (492 posts) -

I was really excited for the title but everything about this smells funky...

Release dates don't have anything to do with the way cover art changes from region to region. Just a tip

Jup it's been common for atleast the last 20 years, One of the most recent examples I can think of is the Shadows OF The Damned cover art from Japan that was too hot for the west. ;d
