Gippal

Overview

Gippal is an 18 year old Al Bhed who appears as a non-playable character in Final Fantasy X-2. Not much is known about his past other than he always wanted to be a Crusader but due to his Al Bhed heritage, he was declined. He found out about the Crimson Squad who accept everyone into their ranks and wasted no time in seizing the opportunity to join the group. He trained in the skills of machinery and told his team-mates that nobody could use machina like an Al Bhed. While on a training mission in the Sanubia Sands, Gippal comes across Nooj, Baralai and Paine. The four of them end up becoming a team and they learn a lot about each other and form a friendship together. The team was sent on a mission to the Den of Woe so that they could be come Crimson Squad members. While there, they witnessed other applicants slaughtering each other and after a while, a spirit called Shuyin possesses the team and Nooj pulls his gun on his comrades. However, Paine separates them from each other and Shuyin leaves Gippal and Baralai but secretly lays dormant in Nooj. The team escape the Den and meet up with officials who tell them they are official Crimson Squad members but later try to kill them. The team manage to escape however, and they take refuge in Rin's Travel Agency on the Mi'ihen Highroad. However, Nooj is still possessed by Shuyin and he turns on his comrades, shooting each of them in the back and leaving them for dead. All of them manage to survive the attack but they split up and go their separate ways. Gippal returns to Home and meets Auron in the desert. While there, he learns that Home is being attacked by Guado so he is forced to evacuate on an airship to escape the attack.

Final Fantasy X-2

Two years later, after Yuna defeats Sin, Gippal starts the Machine Faction in the Djose Temple which is now abandoned. While at the temple, he meets Yuna, Rikku and Paine who wish to go on an excavation in the Bikanel Desert. Paine acts as if she as never met Gippal before and he hires them.At this point, Nooj is the leader of the Youth League and Baralai is the Praetor of New Yevon.Although both teams are at war with each other, Gippal remains neutral and supplies machines to both sides. Eventually, Gippal decides to go to Bevelle Underground where Vegnagun is located. While there, he meets up with Nooj and Baralai and finds Vegnagun is no longer there. Nooj is still possessed by Shuyin and he leaves Nooj and enters Baralai who jumps into the hole Vegnagun left behind.

Gippal and Nooj follow him and find Yuna in a connecting hole, talking to Shuyin who is actually Baralai and they tell her to take care of things topside.Gippal and Nooj eventually manage to reach Vegnagun and they meet Yuna, Paine and Rikku again in the Farplane. The LeBlanc Syndicate has also joined up with them and they decide to take on Shuyin and Vegnagun together. They managed to defeat both Shuyin and Vegnagun and Baralai is released when Shuyin is reunited with Lenne to finally rest in the Farplane. The three groups decide to forget their differences and join together as one group to reunite Spira.

Final Fantasy X-2: International + Last Mission

Gipplal can be recruited as a party member through the Creature Capture system. The player must defeat Gippal in the Den of Woe in order to recruit him and they must set up a Special Monster Pod in Djose Temple.

Appearance and Personality

Gippal is very cocky and self-assured by nature. He has unique green eyes with spiral pupils which is a trait of the Al Bhed as well as a eye-patch that covers his right eye. It is not shown in the game whether Gippal actually lost his eye or if he just wears the patch to look fashionable. Gippal has spiky blonde short hair and wears armor over a blue jumpsuit as well as purple overalls and indigo coloured boots. Little is revealed about his personality in the game but he is shown to be care-free as well as a ladies man as he makes jokes about him and Rikku being 'quite the couple'.

Gameplay Abilities

Gippal wields a large machina gun with a rounded saw blade on the end, similar to Ba'Gamnan's weapon from Final Fantasy XII. When the payer fights Gippal as a boss in the Den of Woe, he is shown to have many strong attacks. These include Grinder, Bullseye and the Blue Bullet ability, Mortar.

• Gippal is voiced by Rick Gomez in English and Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese. His voice actor also plays Zack Fair in Final Fantasy VII.
