Global Agenda Devs Making New Tribes Shooter/MMO
But this latest and as yet unnamed Tribes title won’t just be a multiplayer-focused shooter like the previous Tribes entries (except for Vengeance). On the contrary, in its continuing effort to make the word "Shooter/MMO" an actual genre distinction instead of just weird marketing terminology (there's no concept for it on the site, so as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't exist) the new Tribes game will be just that: a persistent, online multiplayer game where up to 100 players can battle at once with vehicles, classic weapons, and the series-standard jet packs. Developed on a “heavily modified” Unreal Engine 3, Hi-Rez hopes start alpha testing the game early next year. And, hey, if you’re one of the top ranking Global Agenda players, you’ll get priority access to the alpha testing! That's something.
All Hi-Rez is sharing at the moment is the barest bones of an announcement and a few basic design details, so we really don't have a sense of what this game will look like at the end of development. But hey, a classic PC game franchise is getting its next long-awaited iteration! And that iteration comes from the team that made Global Agenda. This is going to go well.

Loved Tribes, though I was a biggest fan of the first one and felt it kinda lost it which each new release. Pretty dubious of this, but we'll see.
I love Tribes but I hate Global Agenda.
So I guess it'll be another 5-7 years before another studio takes a crack at this franchise then, hope they do a good job.
God I live Tribes. This announcement made me instal tribes 2 and download starsiege: tribes (1) which is free btw.
How excited is the Giant Bomb crew to hate it, then become irritated when the developer constantly calls them in hopes of somehow changing their minds?
I thought we were long overdue for a Tribes reboot but, in the immortal words of that super forgettable ugly girl from the Matrix; "not like this."
" MMO shooters aren't working because they're all heavily instanced, and the shooting part is crappy. So why are they doing it again? "agree. and i'd hazard a guess that they're doing it because of $$$ cash. Bank on the Tribes name and the draw of ego shooters.
Awesome! I was so afraid Tribes was just gonna die....would've been a real shame, because they fleshed out a lot of the mechanics were take for granted in games like Battlefield and Halo. It was way ahead of it's time I think...being able to change from agile light suites (scout snipers) all the way up to clunky tank-like suits with rocket and grenade launchers was really amazing for its time. Skiing is a mechanic that I love deeply to this day, and I just hope they get it right in the new game.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Honestly, I'm surprised that this story is even on the site. I figured after the "long live shooter/mmo's" debacle, that the GB crew wouldn't ever want to provide any coverage of what that company does
Agreed. SHAZBOT! I want a new Tribes game, but not from these guys, and not as a bad MMO wanna be. Not since Planetside have I seen anyone even TRY for the full on open world FPS. IF it's only a 100 dudes in an "Instance" that's a bloody Tribes server! Just give me a server based Tribes and I will buy it again and again. :) (Two machines to run after all. ;) )
I loved the original Tribes and was actually very good at it... but I believe my skills have retarded over the years to the point where I would prove most pathetic at it.
I'd still enjoy yelling "Shazbot!" again, though.
" As a massive Tribes 1 fan, this is kinda bad news. GarageGames was working on a QuakeLive style Tribes game, whatever happened to that? That woulda been awesome. "It's dead and these guys own the entire Tribes ip. With which they will most probably make a bloated, anti-fun monstrosity.
Tribes (the IP) vs. Firefall (by the Tribes developers)... This will be interesting to see how they compare.
Shit this will probably be bad. I put so many hours of my life into Tribes Vengeance.
Amazing subtitle
The first 2 tribes games were truly ahead of their time. Vengeance wasn't bad but the game really needs huge environments to shine, so in that regard, maybe this will work. I'm skeptical as hell, given that even GarageGames can't capture the magic of the originals with their new tribes-like shooter, and they made the originals. The mmo thing could work, though, I seem to recall a lot of my tribes 2 clan really loving Planetside as well
