GoldenEye 007
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Aug 23, 1997
A first-person shooter for the Nintendo 64 and a video game tie-in with the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye. It paved the way for a long line of shooter games based on the universe of the British secret agent and is often credited for helping establish first-person shooters for consoles.
Best FPS Multi Ever!
So i was just on the thread about best game game music. and the "pause watch" theme from Goldenete was one of them. it just reminded me of all the good times had playing that game. more specifically how much f***ing fun it was playing Multi !!
I personally had more fun playing that game with a living room full of friends, doing "Winner Plays On" then i'v ever had playing a Halo / COD etc game online.
just wondering if anybody else shares my feelings (it could be any old school [pre online] multi game really)
of course you'd have to be over the age of 18... and have friends... to truly appreciate this!
I do have a lot of good memories playing the game, but it has aged very badly, as many early PS1/N64 games have. The controls especially make it nigh unplayable.
In my opinion though, Perfect Dark was the far superior game. Kept all of the best weapons and levels, but had a lot more options, modes and everything. Really looking forward to the XBLA port with online play and updated controls and graphics.
As far as a multiplayer experience goes, I'd say Goldeneye, Halo 1 or 2 is where my lan party love lies. I like playing on online PC or Xbox Live and all, but it's just not as exciting as having a group of friends all playing together.
Great game, but calling any FPS the best multiplayer one ever is silly, because it seems like each year they keep rendering old FPSes useless. They just make them better and better, that's kinda the point. Old FPS games have the least hold, liek they don't stay fresh looong.
For example, I liked MW2 this year, tis the best FPS multiplayer action I can find.. before it was COD4, and a month before that probably Halo 3 (now that's just xbox, and a very small selection of games, but yeah)
My advice to you is to NOT go back and try to play it as it will wreck your memories. Your love of the game is based on who you played it with and your circumstances at the time. Goldeneye wasn't really all that great.
I had similar fond memories of playing a sci-fi robot based football game on the Genesis with my college roommates. (Cyberball?) I made the mistake of going back a few years ago and trying to play it. It was not the same and destroyed a lot of my good memories of the game. Sometimes you can't recapture the magic of a particular time and place.
I still really like the single player. I don't like the N64 controller anymore but Goldeneye at least uses it pretty well. And I think that some people used the Source engine to make an online version of it for anyone that's interested. I'm not sure if it was ever finished but it seemed like it could work online.
It may have been an unmatchable experience if you played it at the right time and right age, but it also has to be one of the worst aging games of all time.
its all about the experience. even Halo 1 was fun with friends, altho i'm not a fan of the halo series at all lol
and i suppose my point to this post is that hanging out with friends playing is and always has been better than sitting alone in the dark with a headset on playing with a bunch of punk 12 yr olds lol
Personally I hate split screen mode, I hate looking at a screen that was to small. Although when I was growing up, my TV monitor I would be playing on would either be a 13 inch or a 19 inch so split screen sucked for that kind of thing. Although I do prefer local multiplayer unless it is splitscreen.
@Baillie:
yeah i never really played much perfect dark myself. i was all about 007. altho i am kinda stoked to be able to buy PD off of xbox live soon!
yeah we were never aloud oddjob to be playable either... altho when he was it was always a race to be the first person to pick him!
he was just so cheap, you had to aim down or else you could barely shoot him
Console wise... I LOVED Red Faction 2's miltiplayer on the PS2, killed tons of hours of that game with friends
PC wise... Unreal Tournament 2004, playing that game for entire days, skipping school to do lan parties, installing this game on the school's computer to do games in class (eventually our teacher found out, but he didn't care, as long as we finished our work)
