An interesting take on the genre of multiplayer exclusive gaming.

Gotham City Imposters is a game in which two gangs sporting either Batman or Joker inspired garb run around trying to kill each other. The two teams are the Bats and Jokerz. Upon entering a match (assuming you can that is given there have been a not inconsiderable number of problems on pc related to match making) you will be given a team and you will then have to either kill as many people as you can or kill as many people as you can while completing objectives involving holding a location or finding batteries to power the propaganda machines each team has assembled. So it’s pretty standard fair when it comes to game types.

First off the core gameplay is quite interesting and is not as simple as it may appear to be at a glance. The game manages to add some really nice items like the grappling hook and glider increase the verticality of the maps considerably. They allow for new sniping positions and ways of escaping stronger players. They also included a nice arsenal of weapons ranging from the more traditional rifles to the more ridiculous homebrew weapons like the freeze gun and motivator although there some balance issues with the motivator (a loud speaker which restores health) that may need to be resolved. The guns have a nice feel and carry some real weight. You also have a nice as part of the current trend however there are no canned animations for finishing an opponent with a knife which you can take however you want though I personally prefer its absence.

The maps are pretty standard in their inspiration since they mostly devastated urban environments. They however include good design features such as trampolines which allow the players to get on rooftops or to get a boost for their glider there are also up drafts which allow you to glide further. In addition to these there ramps which give a speed boost if you use roller skates and well I think you get the picture. The maps are very nicely laid out as well with strategically placed health and ammo supplies and all manner of ledges to access and snipe hapless victim from.

However the real star of the show is the unlock system. There is an insane amount of stuff to unlock in this game. Every time you level up you will receive an unlock key for a specific area (like a new gun of mod) which can be used whenever you want. It seems pretty clear that if you want your perfect setup that you want to unlock everything that you will be occupied for quite some time. To give some perspective you have to unlock each gun individually then all the mods for that gun in order to complete the list of challenges associated with that gun and for each challenge you complete you receive a new skin for that gun then do it again with every gun. Aside from that there are 2 sets of perks which you can unlock something like 10 to a set and then there is also the calling cards for which there is a huge number as well. As if this weren’t enough your calling card can be modified with a sticker and catchphrase for which there huge numbers of both. The level progression is pretty standard with experience required to level increasing as you level up. One thing which seems to once again artificially extend the games life span is accepting a promotion which you can do at level 100 (it is basically the prestige mechanic from COD).

With regards to bugs I have had no real game breakers appear to me but only the problem that I can be difficult to get into match and that’s about the size of it. Technically speaking the game looks fine and runs well in the Jupiter EX engine created by Monolith who developed the game. The DLC front is minimal its importance it mainly consists unlock packs and calling cards. Monoliths have done a good job of patching the game and add new content regularly.

I would rate 3.5 because while it is fun and has some nice features it is still a bit cluttered with unlocks and has caused problems for pc gamers with regards to bugs and lag.

An epic stumble at the finish line 0

I'm not a big fan of the new, austere, Mr Serious Batman. I'm a huge big stupid fan of 60s Adam West Batman. Gotham City Impostors is a delightful Batman game to me, because it plays with the 60s Batman henchmen idea (catwomen's henchmen all wearing mouse ears for instance) and applies it to the team based first person shooter. As a Batman game, it's funny, charming and honestly a bit of a breath of fresh air in all this serious drabness.I didn't have big expectations of this game, to be honest....
