Overview
Heisei Shin Onigashima ("Heisei-era New Oni Island") is a graphical remaster of the Famicom Disk System game Famicom Mukashi Bunanshi: Shin Onigashima, first released in 1987. It was developed by Pax Sofnica and Nintendo themselves, and recalls a famous Japanese folklore tale about the eponymous island of the mischievous Oni in a menu-based adventure game format. Despite being a first-party game, the menus and presentation were created in a very deliberately Japanese format that has players read sentences first up and down and then right to left, making it difficult to localize for international audiences.
The game was first made available in four episodes on Nintendo's Satellaview service in 1996. They were then added to the Nintendo Power cart-writing service in 1997 in two halves - the same way it was originally sold for the Famicom Disk System - and these two parts were later sold as separate retail carts in 1998. The game would also be added to the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console services, again in two parts. No version of the game was ever sold outside of Japan.
