It was actually planned at an early stage of development in X-Men Origins: Wolverine that Wolverine's clothing would be torn and shredded as he took physical damage, and that unlike his regenerating body, would not return. However, in order to avoid depicting the character naked, the section of pants covering his pelvis would be invincible. This proved problematic: if the player took enough damage to destroy all vulnerable clothing, Wolverine would appear to be wearing short shorts, making it next to impossible to take him or the game at all seriously. Ultimately, to solve this problem, the whole of his pants were rendered invincible, with the shredding effect now restricted to clothes above his waist.
