An exciting thrill ride but not a perfect one.
Killzone 2 follows what seems to be an ongoing trend these days of an FPS having a fantastic but short rollercoaster like experience where it is fun and exilerating while it lasts but when it's done your not satisfied and even more so in Killzone 2 than most games and it makes up for it with amazingly addictive multi-player. Killzone 2 has one of the most disappointing endings I have experienced since halo 2, that dosen't make the experince itself any worse but is is disappointing. However the quality of the single-player is fantastic because while most games has a great experience and a few set-pieces to make the experince more exilerating, killzone 2 is pretty much just set-pieces and thows in a few bosses and vehicle moments just for good measure, so while it is short (like 5 hours short) and has a disappointing ending it is amazing from start to almost the finish and then a disappointing finish. Killzone 2 is also the best looking game ever at the moment having every effect in the book and dozens of enemies on-screen with tanks and huge (destructable) buildings everwhere, however the destructablilty is only on set buildings, so you might shoort a building and see pieces of it shoort off in a satisfying display and then shoot the building next to it and nothing will happen, so thats to bad and while undoubtedly the best looking game ever, I did see a moment or two of slowdown and at every checkpoint the game pauses for about a half-second, not game-breakers, but I had a few of those also, online, having the game freeze on me multiple times making me turn off my system (about 3 times) through-out my 40 or so hours of online play, but it didn't dock me points because the game knew it was a malfunction, not me unplugging my system . Oddly enough Killzone 2 took me a long time to get the feel of the controls because while most FPS's are really fast-paced, you feel almost sluggish, due to you having at any time maybe 150 pounds of gear on you, you feel very heaving, this sluggish and heavy feeling might deture some players, but for many others it's just different, not a good or a bad different, just different, not everyone will accept it though. There is no co-op, online or off, which is a missed oportunity due to you having at least one other person with you at all times, and often a half-dozen. Multi-player is great and is class based with plenty of badges to get but you max out your level far to quickly (taking maybe 15 hours) and after that it's just badges to get because all the unlockables are achieved through getting to max level (or top rank, however you want to say it) and that leades to a fast and fun 15 hours but after that you stop getting rewarded for doing anything so it relies on the gameplay being addictive, and it is. While most FPS games have about 10 maps on average and have a few throw-away levels, Killzone 2 has about 6 but they are all fantastic and you will never have that moment when a level you don't like gets picked because they are all just so good however playing the same few maps over and over again does get a little old after your 40th hour of online play.. Killzone 2 has all the standard modes of any other FPS and dosen't add any new ones, but they are all played out in a new way because every match is comprised of every mode but in tiny versions, so you might start out playing TDM and when that is finished it might roll right into a game of CTF with only about a 20 second pause inbetween and the constantly changing objectives keep things unpredictable and fresh. Killzone 2 really is a fantastic game with a few things holding it back, from game-freezes to slowdown, disappointing ending and lack of new modes and few maps, but what Killzone is, is the best looking game on any system with a fantastic (but short) single-player and fantastic (but limited map variety) online play. Everything Killzone 2 is is fantastic but no part is perfect. Buy it, it's an amazing thrill-ride for your money.
