Action RPG (Action Role-Playing Game), also known as ARPG, refers to RPGs (role-playing games) that use direct, real-time, reflex-oriented, action combat systems, instead of the more abstract turn-based or menu-based battle systems.
Some creatures don't need guns or swords to hurt you. Instead they pack a punch with some kind of deadly breath attack, be it flaming, poisonous, radioactive, or just plain bad!
Some game characters just cannot swim. This usually means automatic death as soon as they hit the water.
Classes are different archetypes and playstyles that players can choose to play their game with.
A bar, usually at the bottom of the screen, which tells you what direction enemies, locations, or main quests are.
Carefully exploring a large, labyrinthine area full of enemies (i.e., a dungeon) in the hopes of finding treasure, leveling up, or completing a specific task. Having their roots in tabletop games, video game dungeon crawls are found almost exclusively in RPGs.

Enemies that prefer to keep a distance to the ground, and swoop down occasionally to do some damage.
Magical creatures made of stone, resembling the grotesque statues commonly part of Gothic architecture such as the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
These spooky entities are the spirits of the dead, returned from beyond their graves for generally sinister purposes. There's generally about even odds whether a particular ghost will be helpful or malevolent towards the living, but some ghosts just want to be left alone entirely.
An numeral indication of how much damage a character can sustain. The loss of all hit points results in the death of the character or another penalty.
A school of game design often associated with Looking Glass Studios, in which the player is free to act as they choose in a richly simulated world. The term was coined by Warren Spector in his Deus Ex post-mortem.
A heavily armored soldier in the service of a lord or cause. Typically a champion of good and a defender of the innocent.
The process by which characters reach a new level, gain greater attributes, and learn more abilities. It usually involves earning enough experience points by completing a variety of tasks such as quests or by "farming" such as killing other characters for their experience points.
Collecting objects in a game such as weapons, armor, items, and currency. Loot is often associated with RPG games and MMOs with RPG elements.
A stylistic choice of employing small polygon counts for meshes.
