Probably the best Mario Kart since 64, but still with flaws.
Well Mario Kart Wii is a new Mario Kart game. It is a Mario Kart game at it's roots, but made for the Wii. There is not much to describe here because you are all pretty familiar with the series I presume if you are reading this and if not it is a kart racing game with Mario and friends.
The Good
- A wide varitey and diversity of tracks.
- 12 Player Online
- Variety of characters
- Wii Wheel packed in
The Bad
- Items are still unbalanced horribly.
- Very difficult for the casual gamer which the Wii Wheel is marketed for.
- Motorbikes add a new dimension to the game but in reality they are that different than the carts.
- Nothing groudbreaking added to the game to enhance the franchise.
Well Mario Kart Wii is the new Wii Mario Kart. First off Mario Kart features a wide varitey of controll methods. You can use the Wiimote with or without the wheel, the nunchuck and the Wiimote, the Classic Controller and the Gamecube Controller. Each one is different and every one works allright for the job, it is more of a personal preference to the controller. The only thing I wish was you could set the steering to the Classic Controller to the d-pad but you can't.
As gameplay wise it is your standard Mario Kart fare. Race around the track using items trying to get first. In this game they really did a good job with the tracks. They have the perfect blend of varitey and difficult. They are not as painfully hard as double dash, but at the same time they are not as bland as the tracks in the DS game. There is a lot of variety in the tracks you will be racing in which means it is a good time. There is also new motorbikes but they really are not too different than the karts. Speaking of the karts they are like the DS version with attributes. You can tell the difference and well if you played the DS version you got the picture. The online works surpisginly well and is virtually lag free.
The only real problem with the gameplay is the item unbalance. Mainly it is the blue shells. The blue shells really cause a problem because they only take out the person in first place or if someone is near which does nothing to someone who is not in the top 5-6. Other items are ok, but the whole thing could be a rebalance to make it more enjoyable. The singleplayer boils down to take the lead and pray a blue shell doesn't hit, and that is the same in Mario Kart DS. If you can get past that though, the game is pretty fun.
Graphically the game is some of the best on the Wii. It really shows off the Wii's power but and just looks good. The music and sound is also well done. You have come to expect this with Mario Kart though.
In conclusion Mario Kart is a welcome addition to the series but it's flaws and not adding anything to the series makes this shy of greatness. Should you pick it up, well it all depends on if you want to play more Mario Kart or not. Thats all I can say here, because it is a good game but it's the same old Mario Kart.
