    Mirror's Edge

The story can best be described as "We are trying really hard to be edgy" even to the point where the make a point of using the title as some kind of pun.

Regardless, it's a first person freerunning game with an awkward combat system. If you give up on a game in 2 minutes you'll hate the first person freerunning. But any more than 2 minutes and you'll get the hang of it. What you won't get the hang of are some wonky controls. For example, if you want to jump to a pipe next to you, you look at it, press forward, and then jump, but if you aren't looking right, this fails and you die. Or you can look at the pipe you are on, press the direction of the place you want to get to, press jump, and you'll PROBABLY get there. But not always.

Compounding the problem is the awkward fighting. Despite all the enemies (cops) that have a desperate case of "lackey syndrome" in that they can't shoot straight worth shit (you can stand 2 feet from a guy with submachine gun and there's a good chance he'll miss) fighting is still awkward. You have little health, and unlike Assassin's Creed the weapons, health, and controls really don't flow well with the "running around" part of the game.

In the end, it can be fun to perform crazy stunts in first person or try to use the controls to quickly scale the environment. But it's a closed environment, a short game, and there's really very few races, exploration, or other motivations for you to really want to run and climb around quickly besides just doing it for the fun of the controls, which are good, but for most probably not good enough to warrant spending more than a few bucks on this.

Mirror's Edge is certainly not a game without faults, and I can easily see how some of its problems could lead to indifference or even genuine dislike towards the game. But I found its presentation and unique take on platforming from a first person perspective to be an interesting and at times perfectly thrilling experience. I think what I really wanted was a lot of its ideas in a better considered game, but I had a lot of fun playing through it despite the very high number of times I mes...

A short, but solid game. 0

While playing the first Assassin’s Creed back in the day, I thought that it would be cool if a similar game could be made, but from a first person perspective. Mobility in games is usually an afterthought for most developers – sometimes it varies, with the ability to crouch, jump, lean, and prone, but for the most part, video games rarely ever emphasis movement. And then in walks Mirror’s Edge.Released back in 2009, Mirror’s Edge is a video game about a “Runner&rdqu...
