when Disney bought Lucasfilm in Octo (for $4.05 billion), they also acquired Lucasarts, the original developer of Monkey Island. game creator Ron Gilbert told eurogamer, "I would love to contact them at some point [and] get the rights back and be able to really make the game I want to make." If he is successful, the game would be made at Double Fine with Tim Schafer. i still have the boxed game of Monkey Island 2. on FLOPPY DISKS!!

    edit: 'NEWS'

This really is not news. Some guy saying "Yeah I would want to make the game" when he does not even own the rights anymore does not qualify.

I think they have done all they can with the Monkey Island franchise, the story I would like to see is him find a magic portal that transports him to modern day New York.

Disney loves just selling off properties. Yeah, I can't see them hoarding and fiercely protecting their copyrights.

They might license the property out to Double Fine or someone else one day, but they will never relinquish the rights.

@Bourbon_Warrior: They could still make Gilbert's MI3, but Disney has no reason to do that, because why would you ever definitively end a franchise you just bought?

I'd rather have a remake of Grim Fandango. I'm happy with Double Fine working on original ideas, like the Kickstarter adventure game.

I would very much like this. I've never played those 2 and they aren't (legally) available anywhere.

I think the opportunity for that is long gone. I mean, Pirates of the Caribbean was originally supposed to be Monkey Island: The Movie, but it's quite obvious what became of that.

That's not really what that Wikipedia article really says, and honestly isn't all that relevant in this topic. Why would Ron Gilbert's decision to make or not a new Monkey Island video-game hinge on a decision Steven Spielberg and/or a group of people involved with that script did all those years ago?

maybe i should have said 'news' as it was advertised as such on some websites. of course, the real news is that i have a battered box of MI 2 with all the floppy disks, and would like for it to go to a new home.

(and i don't really want to send it to GB only for them to throw it out with everything else they get)
