Overview
Never Give Up is an upcoming high-difficulty action platformer with a sadistic sense of humor. Each level set is a series of iterative challenges, layering in more and more obstacles, and boss battles throughout. It also contains character costumes that can be unlocked through collecting coins in each stage. The game is voiced by Arin "Egoraptor" Hanson, and features a high level of gore with a morbid sense of humor. It is planned for release on August 13, 2019 for Steam on PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch.
Gameplay
The game is comprised of six unique themed worlds, each with five sets of iterative levels. Players are graded on how quickly they completed a set, how many deaths they encountered, and whether they picked up any hidden items.
The goal of each level is to make it to the exit intact, but one hit counts as death, so players will need split-second timing and reflexes. There are also coins and other hidden collectibles found throughout the game that can be used to unlock costumes to wear. Players looking for a slightly less challenging experience can play the game in an easier mode.
The Button
Unique to the Give Up series is The Button. After players have died a number of times they are able to "Give Up" on a level by pressing the Give Up button. Doing so will complete a level and allow the player to advance to a new level, at the cost of being mocked by the game. Players are encouraged to return to complete levels that they have previously given up on.
History
Never Give Up began as a pair of popular free online Flash games, Give Up and Give Up 2. The original, created by John Cooney and designed by Mike "Tasselfoot" Pollack in 2012, while the sequel was developed by Massive Monster with design again by Tasselfoot in 2015. Both games were sponsored by online free gaming portal Armor Games. Together they have been played over ten million times on Armor Games alone and were popular fodder for YouTube videos from personalities such as Markiplier and PewDiePie among many others due to the game's tendency to encourage players to "rage" at it. Never Give Up was successfully Greenlit for Steam in April of 2016.
