I'm praying this doesn't flop. It could be the next step in game development if they pull it off correctly.
No Man's Sky
Game » consists of 7 releases. Released Aug 09, 2016
A procedurally generated space exploration game from Hello Games, the creators of Joe Danger.
Getting ready for No Man's Sky.
I keep thinking I need to do the same as I've had a super space game itch and can't wait to see how it turns out - keep flirting with Elite Dangerous but I think I'm going to hold out. I worry about getting spaced out before it hits, as right now I keep hitting decision paralysis with what I want to play between Uncharted, Doom, and many more including returning to AC Black Flag because of the stupid Pirates of the Carribean movies being on TV and Steam sale.
Did anyone recommend Rebel Galaxy?
@themanwithnoplan: Oh that does sound amazing, one can hope that Hello Games can get No Man's Sky working in PSVR...
@capum15: I think I recall the quicklook for Rebel Galaxy, I'll now be looking into this. Thanks :D
@sauseman: Just this screenshot alone looks stunning, excited to muck about with this. Thanks for the link and idea. :D
@cikame: There will apparently also be trading, and a large economy to work within. Also destructible/mine-able terrain, but if it is just a walking/exploring simulator Ill be okay with that too.
@zombievac: Even from what I've played of it I think you'd really like Elite.
But yeah, I agree to be a bit worried about No Man's Sky for a lot of people. But for me, Im confident it will be what I'm looking to get out of it.
I love the feeling of generating a new world in Minecraft and just wandering, so if I get that. Ill be good.
@joe_mccallister: its been brought up once or twice, definitely on my "look into this game NOW list".
I'll update my original post with the list I have so far later tonight.
@mrgarland: I too am praying. Also hoping it's servers are stable day one... lol
@cirdain: ummm... maybe??
@nickolas_moore: Servers should be fine for the most part since it has an offline mode, and day one the odds of you having any interaction with someone else's discovery is almost 0
Every time I think about this game, I think about how Freelancer could quench my thirst for a space sim.
I should probably reinstall Freelancer.
You should play Freelancer.
@takayamasama: all true, still worried hahaha.
@facelessvixen: I will be next week. Hahaha :D
Give MirrorMoon EP a go. It's ostensibly a puzzle game, but there are procedurally-generated planets to explore and you can name star systems if you're the first one there :P
I was surprised how much Rebel Galaxy reminded me of Freelancer in terms of exploration, not so much combat. Also you couldnt fly into Suns/planets and that was a bummer.
The back part of Freelancer is INSANE The Dyson Sphere blew my mind!
Xenoblade Chronicles X.
None of the crafting aspects. But in terms of just exploring and adventuring on a huge unknown sci-fi world, you'll struggle to do better.
I also quite like the original Mass Effect in that you could just go and explore all of these planets. Although the hand-made ME1 planets actually looked more procedurally generated than the NMS planets. Lol.
@gstats: I 100% agree with that. I had never played a Xenoblade game before, got this after seeing the Quick Look and wanting something to play on my Wii U, put 200 hours into before I was done. Freaking amazing game. Story was better then I thought it would be, being a JRPG/Anime game, most characters were fine, and that exploration/combat was so satisfying. It really did a good job making you feel like you are on an alien world.
I might also recommend Solus Project on Steam - it's different and pretty interesting, lots of mystery and walking around, not so much combat or fast paced but it's a survival-esque game with crafting and some really cool attention to detail and great sound.
I'm going in cold. I don't want to judge it against anything else I have recently played. That's just my way of coping with not having it yet.
I have been playing Evolve. More and more I think I might try to seek out and hunt the biggest and most dangerous life I can find in No Man's Sky. I'm really curious about hostile wildlife in this game and I think it might be fun to actually hunt for it and build bigger and better weaponry to take them down like an inter-galactic Predator.
I'm a notorious re-watcher of movies and I have been re-watching a lot of sci-fi movies and TV shows and keeping gaming to a minimum purely in anticipation for how much I plan on playing NMS.
Whenever someone mentions Dune (like someone has in this thread!), I like to revisit the Dune and Children of Dune mini-series that aired on the Sci-fi channel. I also plan to re-watch the David Lynch Dune movie in the next week or so.
Other movies on my list: Blade Runner, The Abyss, Sphere, Predator, Predator 2, Predators, Alien, Aliens, and Prometheus. Star Wars, Star Trek TNG and Farscape are good too, I might save some of these to play alongside NMS release.
This is one game that gives me zero interest. Truthfully looks mega-boring, repetitive and tedious. I am open to trying it but it's not something I will ever pay full price for. Visiting different planets/environments seem cool but...that's about it. Gameplay looks slow and uninspired.
Just another "good idea, bad game."
@beachthunder: Added to the list, THANKS!
@gstats: I'll definitely look into this, thanks :D
@joe_mccallister: a slow-ish survival game sounds nice. Added to the list!! Thank you
@monkeyking1969: I completely respect this idea, the itch is just SO HARD right now.
Also, still polishing my streaming setup and working on my "skills" so this is good practice.
@justkamtoo: SO MUCH EXCITEMENT! Excited to see the other 3 of these. Is there a timeline for release of these?
@shaggydude: OH! movie and show lists, thank yoou!!!
I never watched the Dune mini-series. Will seek out now.
Yep, really exceptional game. Hope they bring it forward onto the NX so more can experience it because it's still at under 1 million copies sold. Which is an absolute scandal.
@gstats: It's one of the only games I truly wish I had a WiiU for. Sadly can't afford one at this time, I too am hoping it comes it NX
you know what? im fucking hyped. im tempted to do something dumb and go ahead and prorder it tonight, even. seriously, though, i can't see it being anything less than very good. what theyve shown already is enough to get me salivating.
@ripelivejam: Do. It.
Check out the Evochron games from StarWraith 3D Games. Legacy is the latest release. You can download the demo for free, and the full game for $25 on Steam or direct from StarWraith.
Another one of those quick trailers is out and imo it looks sorta bad.
I'm still definitely getting it cause I think the exploration and ship building/tech tree stuff can hold my interest alone. But man that combat doesn't look great.

Looks like more trouble for Hello Games... It doesn't look like this will delay it anymore anyway.
Also, my first post on mobile. Ugh. I came back and edited it at home to make the link a link.
@neocalypso: it looked a bit lackluster but I think thats the trade you make with a big game like this - the jack of all trades and master of none situation.
Im totally ok with how that space combat looks. Looks simple, Star Fox-esq, and just what I want. I can't get into the super deep space combat/travel stuff like Elite, though I've tried and would have loved to...it just didn't click.
Also I think it'll be a lot better then the trailer looks in actual game. These series of trailers are all being made by Sony not Hello Games so it's gonna be your normal big publisher trailer with tons of cuts. I'm sure if Hello Game made these they would showcase stuff in a better light.
So close...we are so close to liftoff!
@ripelivejam: I did that exact stupid thing and preordered on PSN yesterday.
