From what I can tell, there are only a few kinds of anime voices. If I watched more Japanese VOs I could probably start hearing subtle differences. But as it is, to me most female characters in Japanese VOs fall into only a couple of categories. And within those categories, they sound nearly identical. I like it when characters sound unique. It's easier for me to imagine them as real people.
I'd say you just haven't watched enough. I think it's easy to hear just 'one' kind of voice when you're listening to a foreign language, so there's nothing wrong with that. For my part, representing the local nerd brigade, I have enough of a grasp on the language that I can acknowledge a wide array of styles and dialects, and it's definitely there. I actually find more variety in the original audio than I do in the dubs... but then again that's because we have like three female VAs in this scene, haha. The amount of times I play a game and say "oh, it's her again" is towering. It's like I have the opposite issue as you do, heh.
I'm a fan of a lot of the dub talent, really. Just hoping to see a lot more talent come in to diversify it more.
Yeah you're probably right on that.
