I'd say you just haven't watched enough. I think it's easy to hear just 'one' kind of voice when you're listening to a foreign language, so there's nothing wrong with that. I actually find more variety in the original audio than I do in the dubs... but then again that's because we have like three female VAs in this scene, haha. The amount of times I play a game and say "oh, it's her again" is towering. It's like I have the opposite issue as you do, heh.

I'm a fan of a lot of the dub talent, really. Just hoping to see a lot more talent come in to diversify it more.

That is a factor I didn't consider. Most localizers tend to just cite the technical hurdles though, when answering questions on the subject. But it does sound likely that contracts have gotten in the way too, so I'd believe that. Yet, again it's a lot of the smaller companies who have the Japanese VA in their games, so it seems that money is no issue in many cases. But I guess this is another thing that depends heavily on the relationship between the original developer and the localization team.

@PenguinDust: absolutely fine with other languages, it's just something about japanese women in particular and their mannerisms in speech that just kinda rubs me the wrong way. I can see what you mean about the tones but I find it incredibly hard to ignore how grating I find the mannerisms.

Japanese VA Chie>US VA Chie in this case.

I always hated Chie's English VA anyway. She sounded so off. I look forward to this.

Man, this is a bummer. I really do hope that this is the only recasting, because by now those voices are too ingrained in my head. I don't know that I can adjust. Heck, the main reason I'm interested in this game is revisiting the characters and seeing what they're up to, anything that messes with the characters is going to bum me out.

Just keep all the other VAs the same, and we'll probably be good.

That's the only glaring standout because it's repeated so often to the point that it's become a meme. Her line readings in general aren't terrible; they're just not as good as they could have been. But the thing is, from my understanding of this thread and what searches I've tried to do online, while Chie's original actress is primarily a stage actress, she has relatively little experience in the field of voice acting, and it shows, particularly next to more experienced voice actors and actresses like Troy Baker or Amanda Winn Lee. It's also telling in that Chie's actress seems to be the only one that's miscredited on the game's IMDB page.

The thing is, she's not terrible in the role. Not by a long shot. There have been far worse voice actors over the years. And the misreading of "Aha, is this our chance," isn't charming. It's a blatant misreading; one that was unfortunately chosen to be kept in the game despite its utter awkwardness.

The intent was to come across as a cute character trait. Not eyerollingly unconvincing, like it does in the game. I'm not going to pretend Yukiko's VA was terrible or anything, but I strongly prefer the rest of the cast minus Naoto.

Anyway, I truly do not remember being particularly bothered by Tracey's line reads in P4 at all. Whether she needed to be laid-back, excited or angry(at Yosuke), I always thought she was able to convey it perfectly fine. The only reason "aha, is this our chance?" sticks out is because its such a quality dip and because it gets repeated a ton(also, because the ER turned it into a running joke, much like how everyone pretends Naoto's gender is identifiable by looking at her.)

Yes, it's a cute character trait in that this quiet, reserved girl with the proper upbringing laughs like a goddamn hyena. That's my point. :P

I enjoyed the English voicework in Eternal Sonata, as well. And I think that Erin Fitzgerald has definitely shown a lot of range if she can do voices as varied as Polka in ES and Erica in Catherine. I'm pretty sure she'll be fine as the new Chie.

Mistral had a worse VA but Sakubo's badness sticks out to me more since overall .hack G.U. had better voice acting.

granted I haven't heard all of Fitzgerald's voice range (what I have heard is decent quality), but man she doesn't sound like Chie to me. Which is too abd given how important Chie is to the whole game.

Guys, you're also missing some other important news. When asked about getting every one back for the anime, the guy at Sentai said:

"accurate, except for one cast member (Kuma/Teddie, voiced by Dave Wittenberg) who is unavailable."

No english Teddie in the anime (and possibly Golden/Arena)!

Also apparently they confirmed that they'd gotten all the voices back (which i guess includes Chie then) before actually contacting any of them... Smooth.

Keep in mind that these are the same guys who failed to contact ANY of the VA they "confirmed" for the anime. I wouldn't worry too much.

I'm going to wait and hear it myself before jumping to any conclusions at this point.

On topic, I don't mind too much that they couldn't get her back. I'm a bit more worried about Golden though, if Erin Fitzgerald is doing that too they'd better re-record all of Chie's lines. That would actually give me more reason to get that game.
