I had no idea what 'down' (in reference to feathers) was when I was a teenager playing Final Fantasy since English wasn't my native language. I just thought it sounded cool and it was a brand name for the magical revival potion thingy.

I did recall seeing feathers but thought they were angel feathers or something. Resurrection = holy magic = feathers.
This is shocking to me...not the Phoenix Down bit...the part of that many folks not knowing what it meant. Also, as many posters have pointed out, the icon has been a feather for as long as I can remember.
@Mercator: At least I have an excuse, since I live in a non-English speaking country where nobody calls feathers 'down'. I reckon it's the same case for other folks in different countries too. But yeah, it is a bit surprising that a lot of people in English-speaking nations didn't make the connection.
I myself did not connect the two either. It make sense.
Someone mentioned "Goose" which remind me of a story where my roommate was telling the story of how "Geese" Killed Terry's dad in Fatal fury and the person responded with "A flock of geese killed his dad that is messed up." I lawled.
