Well it didnt brick my ps3... so i can say is a safe update.
I actually stood there and looked for what was new.... took me a while to figure out that  there wasnt anything new to the xmb
The gameing card still takes ages to load.. BUT NOW THERE IS A LITTLE YELLOW START besides your trophy numbers so I guess that was the update.
Couple of new options under BD settins, system settings has new options as well. They upadated the divx thingy i think because now there is an option to register a code on a website.. ( for better playback) i dont know but since its free we should be happy

my 2 cents.

Oh and the most useful update was the * last time he was log* thing, it helps when youn want to delete people that never connects ;p

Honestly, from what I read, the update to flash 9 is one of the biggest things there. The screen shot thing sounds kewl but I hear its a "per game basis" as in a dev needs to include the feature for it to work :(

I hope Sony puts it on their website soon. Because god unknown, I've never been able to download any firmware straight from my PS3 without getting an error. Not. Once.

I auto turn off for the controllers is the nicest feature for me.  I always just leave my stuff on laying around.
