So my cousin's PS3 wont read any discs so we decided we were going to take his PS3 apart and clean off the sensor. It was a lot of fun and we used youtube videos to give us tips on how to open the console and when we put it back together it still worked but the PS3 made loud noises if you put a disc in and none of the discs would come out so we had to dissect it again to get my copy of Super Bad out of it. Have you ever opened your PS3?

So does it work? Or did you all tear it apart for nothing?

Well it isn't any better. It still wont read discs and now it wont eject discs either but we didn't destory it or anything. I think he is going to send it to a professional to fix.

Correct me if Im wrong but didnt you void the warranty by opening the console up. So now you cant send it to Sony without paying some sort of fee. Its risky business opening up a console without prior experience. I doubt you had any since you needed YouTube videos for help. I do agree that its cool doing stuff like that and I wish I could open my PS3 up, but not at the cost of my warranty. Especially since I had my firs PS3 (Im currently on number 2) die after the first 3 days after purchase!

Well my cousins warranty was already expired so he didn't care.

Does that not kill the warranty as Liquid price said?

Sorry for saying so, but cracking up the console to clean the sensor is pretty dumb. There are sensor-cleaning discs out there that´ll do a heck of a better job than voiding your warranty

I don't own a PS3, but I doubt I will ever attempt to open up my eventual PS3. I would end up fucking something up, and it would be nothing but hell from there on.

Some dildo painted that on the wall of my school for a mural project. Cool beans, though. As of now, I have dissected an Xbox, a PS1 and a PS2.

Dude WHAT! Your looking at someone who could set water on fire in a microwave and burns instant Ramen like a motherfucker!

Unless I want to accidently hit the sceret self destrcut button on my console I don't think I'll ever take it apart.

Never opened up my PS3, but I had to open up my PS2 to fix the "Unable to Read Disc" error that was popular in many early PS2's.  Took me about 3 hours to do what I wanted, following a guide on GameFAQs.  It read discs for a few months after that, but then went right back to that same error.  In the end, that PS2 died a few weeks later.  Had to buy a new one, but it has been working perfectly since.

All in all, I have opened and/or modded a SNES (this one just for cleaning), a NES (pulled the pins in the cartridge reader closer together), Xbox (didn't add any mods.  Only opened it because the LAN port was destroyed during a brown out), and a PSP (modded the d-pad and gor rid of dust that had accumulated under the screen).

Semi long post, but I am bored.

I opened mine up to upgrade the hard drive. If you call that opening up, that is. This doesn't void the warranty, either (at least not in the UK) =)

Hmm, let's see. I popped open my DC to fix the random restart. Also performed a little region-free mod on my SNES. Had to fix the keyboard on my Acorn Electron, but I guess that doesn't count as a console. Don't actually own a PS3, though.
