So I have a Samsung 1080p 2333HD and I thought that when I was playing my games that said it runs in 720p, 1080i and 1080p (Prince of Persia, Bioshock etc.) that my TV would be running in 1080p mode... But I've realised that the box in the top left corner that pops up when the game starts has been saying '1280x720' not the '1920x1080' that I assumed it would be running at.
All the display settings are at what they should be, has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

The PlayStation 3 (often abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console created and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Something I just realised.
When you have checkmarks in the 720p and 1080p boxes, the PS3 and TV automatically uses the games default resolution. So that would be 720p for pretty much every game.
Oh, so will I have to automatically change that every time I play a 1080p game?" When you have checkmarks in the 720p and 1080p boxes, the PS3 and TV automatically uses the games default resolution. So that would be 720p for pretty much every game. "
EDIT: Manually not automatically
" @pornstorestiffi said:I think if you go uncheck the 720p box and only leave the 1080p one, it should upscale the game. I always let my PS3 select game default resolution for my games, i have a Samsung 46 inch, and the games looks sweet in their native 720p resolution, so i never thought of it as an issue. But let me know how it turns out." When you have checkmarks in the 720p and 1080p boxes, the PS3 and TV automatically uses the games default resolution. " @pornstorestiffi: If you uncheck the 720p box it will just default back to 540p on games that don't support 1080p. I'm now running Prince of Persia at 1080p. It looks amazing, but then again it already did :P There's not a huge difference really. "Oh yes i forgot that 540p mode, i never use that so i dismissed it. But yeah it just upscales it, doesn't add anything. And as you said it looks nice both ways, you won't spot any different from native 720p to a 720p signal upscaled.
But nice you got it working as you wanted.
" @girdz said:Can you uncheck the 540p box? For me it's always checked. I can't turn it off. If a games are by default intended to run at 720p then does forcing them to run at 1080 cause any negative effects? Is the visual improvement a positive and drastic change or what?
I'm curious as I bought a PS3 some weeks ago alongside a 42" Plasma and it defaults to 720p for games. So any input on this would be helpful :)

No, there is nothing wrong. Games that run at 720p, will make the PS3 switch the TVs resolution to 720p. Thats why you see the screen flash and the box appear. When you quit back to the XMB, the screen will again have the box say 1080p on it. For games that are 1080p, the screen will stay the same and you can check using the INFO button on your samsung remote.
If you have 1080p checked on the resolution part of the options in the XMB, it will still do this swtich.
WHY? It is because unlike the 360, the PS3 does not include an upscaler, so games will only run at their native resolutions. Check your game boxes and it will tell you the native resolution. The 360 boxes dont help because they just list the resolutions the Xbox supports, not the game.
" @TheHBK: PS3 doesn't have an upscaler? There is an option in game settings where you can turn PS Upscaler on. "No, that only works for movies, DVD's specifically. The Xbox has a hardware upscaler, the PS3 one is software for DVDs. Otherwise I would not be so annoyed everytime my TV flashed because it changed the resolution.

by the way, just out of curiosity, how much does it cost to get a 1080p cable for the ps3 and is it really worth it. im considering it now, but i dont know if it will be a waste of money or not
Yeah seems like it does cause some weird effects. I just tried it on Uncharted 2, and it looks weird. Says the picture is running at 1920x1080 at a 60Hhz. But it looks kind of jaggy, the cinematic where the worst they looked awful." If a games are by default intended to run at 720p then does forcing them to run at 1080 cause any negative effects? So i actually don't know what the hell is going on.
Cause i seems a little weird if the TV displays 1080p but actually runs a 520p signal. Makes no sense.
EDIT: Did some digging on the web, and seems that if you uncheck 720p and 1080i from the boxes, some game do infact upscale the 720p native resolution up to a 1080p signal, while others just reverts to 480p/520p.
Ok example here, Bioshock will output 1080p signal, Uncharted 2 or Motorstorm 2 won't, they will revert to 480p instead of going to 1080p. Pretty fucked.
Thanks for the info!
" @pornstorestiffi: Well I think Uncharted 2 looks absolutely brilliant at 720 I was just curious if 1080 made any major or drastic improvement too it. But it seems like it probably doesn't or won't run naturally at that resolution. Just curious to know though :) Thanks for the info! "No problem man, was curious my self, so had to try it out.
" @TheHBK said:I think the option you're looking at is the the PSone game upscaler. It tries to make the old games look a little nicer on larger screens." @girdz said:Why is it in game settings? " @girdz:You're TV doesn't actually change resolutions. If it's a 1080p tv, it will always display a 1080p image. What the little box in the corner actually means is the resolution of the signal it's receiving. If the signal isn't the same resolution it will process the image accordingly to display it, I.E. upscale 720p to 1080p, deinterlace 1080i to 1080p.
