Playstation Home just got really interesting. Can we not have any "Home suxxorz" people on here before you've actually tried this. I dunno whether there has been much talk about it (I don't think so on these boards) but you can now access "Xi" from the Home space. It's an Alternate Reality game.

I'm copying and pasting from my website to save double typing:

Playstation Home Xi has just launched. It’s essentially an Alternate Reality game that takes place within the Playstation Home application.

We’ve spent a few minutes with it and think it’s absolutely brilliant. Essentially, you enter a new area called The Hub via the Home Square. From here you’re giving a tour around a mysterious room. Nothing is explained to you, the voices are particularly secretitive. Shortly after the tour you are issued a task to find the pieces of a ripped apart document.

Then it’s up to you to find it. Upon finding them the experience opens out more, gaining your new tasks and missions to complete. If this is the way Home is likely to progress then colour us really interested. It’s no secret Home has been a little sparse since its launch but, for the first time, we actually feel compelled to explore this Hub area and complete the missions that are being presented to us.

Give it a go guys, I'm eager to hear feedback on this. Finally Home has a reason for me to load it up. I'm going to drop back in and see where the experience takes me. Could end up being a letdown but from what I've done so far, really enjoying it.

    EDIT: Better explanation on Kotaku:

As much as i wanna say home sucks ill say something a bit more.
yes i've tried this...and its not really worth it simply put home was touted as this all inclusive system with game connectivity and all that and in the end its becomming a completely seperate program with next to no connections with comprehensive game launching and party lobbying, and like i said what i've seen of Xi makes no sense as a reason to go to a completely different program that literally does take a minute to load, then minutes to load your room, then minutes to load the lobby then minutes to load any area, and then if you go to an area you've never been you've gotta download it...ect

When home takes a minute to load every thing i need to set up parties, and support comprehensive game lobbies and all that then ill use it on a regular basis till then I don't think sony is really that serious about home id rather they just suspend all work on it, shut it down and move all that money, and R&D research and programmers and workers on making better firmware, and psn a better service.
P.S: as for Xi from what i saw it was pretty dull it wasn't a very high calibur game it seemed like it was put together by some college students.

Totally ignoring William's post as it has nothing to do with anything. Keep whining dude and the rest of us will take things for what they are.

I think I just completed this weeks missions on Xi. I don't think there are any more, but it's very possible I might have missed something.

To give everyone an idea of what it's all about, here's how I completed one of the missions (may have spoilers but I've tried to keep it spoiler free):

    • Talk to the robot at the back of the room.
    • He tells you to perform an action in front of the message board.
    • Doing that gives you a clue.
    • I thought about the clue and then visited in the in-Home computer and visited a blog.
    • Found a piece of text in an old blog entry relating to the clue.
    • Searched Google for the thing I found about the clue.
    • Got the answer.
    • Enter the answer into the HoloPAD (like another computer thing inside of Home).

The answer was correct and I unlocked a butterfly. Goodness knows what that does.

Sad thing is people are already starting to just post the answers on the 'net so you can cheat if you like. But I recommend not, felt quite awesome getting the answer myself.

The websites you access through the game are actually real too:

    AlphaAFK Homepage.
    Miguel's Blog.

I thought it was horrible. Give us a casino, give us the ability to upload music/videos, let us have custom theaters for our own video content, let us do something refreshing please. Or like Gizmo said, turn it into a MMO atleast.

I don't want to stamp on you because, that's your opinion, but isn't this just about as refreshing as it gets?

It reminds me of that old campaign Microsoft ran before Halo came out, you know that "I Love Bees" thing -- does anyone remember that?

Not sure what you're referring to. At any rate, I guess I just don't fit the demographics of this "Xi" phenomenom. Keep it simple, keep it entertaining, I don't want to do scavenger hunts lol.

you ignore my post because i actually have a point beyond spooging over the latest addition to home that pretty much doesn't deliver a single thing that was promised when home was first released.

    A comprehensive social enviorment/party built around ps3 game launching...ect

But its has all ways been a 2nd life clone, Which is proven more so since you can do most of the same stuff in home you can do in 2nd life, except that 2nd life is far better and more robust of a service...AS for that I gave my opinion on Xi its a dull experience its nothing more then basically a scavenger hunt with some added in mmo elements and its lame it seems like it was created by college programmers.
But then again all most all the games in 2nd...Home look and feel like they were made by college programs.

Not to be inflammatory or anything, but I think he ignored your post because it didn't really have anything to do with Xi, which is what the thread is actually about.

With regard to Xi, everything I've done in it thus far has been pretty dull, but I can the see potential.  I'm willing to extend some good faith on this, if only because it seems like a pretty creative and unusual use for the Home interface.  That said, the success or failure of an ARG typically depends on the quality of the story it's telling, and I'm not entirely sure there's any way to make a story about a bunch of Sony alpha testers exciting.

I ignored your post because it had nothing to do with the thread. Just a incohesive ramble on what you think Home should be. You're allowed to think such things, blog it.

Are the challenges weekly or daily? I might have to dip in for a few minutes to see if it's been updated.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I reckon the challenges are going to get more, erm, challenging (?). I have a feeling they're going to open up that door at the far end of the room at some point and give you a whole new area to explore.

I can understand why people wouldn't bother with this, heck if I wasn't done with Resident Evil 5 I wouldn't have bothered loading it up, but at the very least it's an imaginitive use of the application, and if Sony keep with the "blue-skies" thinking of Playstation Home then I see no reason why it can't be packed with interesting things like "Xi" to do. But I've always seen Home as a free application inside my Playstation 3 and not the "oh no it was supposed to be a killer app and now it's disappointed me I HATE my PS3 for giving me a FREE extension to my console that I never have to use".

Whatever, we're all entitled to our opinions. I'm interested to see where Xi goes. Don't enjoy it, don't do it. It's free -- the police won't arrest you if you skip on it.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think ARGs need to evolve. I'm not quite sure how, but I can't imagine ARGs going on in this fashion forever.

From what I've seen of this, I Love Bees and A.I.'s ARG looks pretty similar in quality. I Love Bees was released five years ago. ARGs have existed for a while, and I think integrating components of ARGs into 3D virtual worlds is an interesting concept. I hope this concept pans out and remains interesting for more than just a week or two.
