Is it just me or is there no hard drive of any kind on this thing? That kind of blows.

Sony Unveils "Next Generation Portable" In Japan
They are in fact designed for a handheld device, they just play similar to a console. This is such a stupid thing to say. The only reason people even say stuff like this is because the DS plays very differently from a console. Back when the first GameBoy came out it played games exactly like consoles too.And to answer your question, yes, I absolutely want to play games as fulfilling and rich as console games on my handheld system. With deep storylines, great gameplay and incredible visuals. I've played through Final Fantasy VII-IX, on the PSP and they are just perfect for handheld gaming. It sounds awesome, 5 inch OLED at a fantastic resolution. This thing is going to look great. "But the thing is, they ARE different. Sitting in a bus or at the airport or wherever staring at a five inch screen, no matter how beautiful, is NOT the same as sitting on a couch in your living room in front of a forty inch TV screen.
You're right that the original gameboy was basically just a portable NES without the color, BUT 8-bit games didn't aspire to be huge engrossing theatrical experiences.
I'm not saying these games aren't possible on a hand held device, the PSP had a few that worked okay (the God of War PSP games for example). But you'll notice that these few weren't enough to launch that platform to success.
Look at the biggest mobile success story of last year, Angry Birds. Cheap, fun, simple, quick pick up and play. It's probably not at all what you want, but it fits a hand held perfectly. It loses nothing from being on a smaller screen. It can be played in quick bursts between meetings or during downtime at work...but at the same time can be dropped at a moment's notice if the boss walks by. Etc.
By the way, I'm not convinced the 3DS is taking any better path than this NGP of Sony's. They both suffer from many of the same, probably, incorrect assumptions. While the NGP is clearly more powerful in every way, both aspire towards a more console like experience.
That said, I'm more excited for the 3DS because Nintendo knows how to make amazing hand held games. They've owned this market since the original Gameboy came out. Their systems have taken down competitors, all of whom tend to focus on system power at the expense of understanding the market, time and time again. It isn't luck that has kept them where they are. It's skill.
I hope I'm wrong and Sony has things figured out and has learned from the PSP, but this new machine suggests to me just the opposite. I guess only time will tell.
i for one hope that this helps kick start 'serious' portable gaming. I can only speak for myself, but I am tired of the Angry Birds and Fruit Ninjas of the world. I am ready to get back to some serious handheld games and this looks like a step in the right direction!
I'm really wondering about the functionality behind many of the new uses for the system. I personally don't think the touch pad on the back is going to find a lot of solid gaming usage. I also don't want my screen to get grimy because I have to touch it all the time. This system seems to be just more. I want something different.
Didn't they so the PSP was supposed to be more powerful than the PS2? So far I have seen like 3 titles that even came close to like first launch PS2 titles. The GoW, MGS, FFVII:CC. Everything else was like PS 1.5. So I wont believe it until I see it that I will have PS3 graphics in the palms of my hands.
" I guess I may be of the old chain of thought, but if I want to do "serious gaming" I want to be at home on my couch infront of my TV. If I'm on the go the iPhone games of the world more then fit my needs. "This is what I think most accurately sums up my feelings to the system, it looks great but I think it may be too big and pointless despite the impressive hardware.
I'll say it once and I'll say it again. If the battery life is upwards from 5 to 6 hours then I will gladly pay $350-$400.
Hmmm. Interesting. So no backwards compatibility to PSP? Download only? Not so much worried about graphics for portables. I want flexibility and quick-turn-on-and-play. I want to be able to pull my game off the shelf, put it in, and play. Download=fail for me.
3DS is looking to be $250, so that's probably as cheap as the NGP can possibly get. But I'm betting it'll be $300-400, easily.
While that isn't a complete dealbreaker for me, region-locking a la 3DS, will be if that turns out to be true. The lack of backward compatibility is already a pretty big turn-off.

Having a competent first person shooter at work for lunch breaks is a pretty tempting notion. I'll probably pick this up if the call of duty and killzone ports are received well. I'm surprised I have excitement for a new sony handheld when I have an iphone in my pocket.
" @MiniPato what do you plan to do with those analog sticks if you don't care about the games?????? Its the software that makes or breaks a platform "Is that a serious reply to my comment? I was expressing my happiness over the addition of a second analog stick through exaggeration.
Isn't a somewhat modern 4 core CPU going to generate quite a lot of heat? I wonder if it will get uncomfortably hot to hold the NGP while playing one of those games that utilizes all the power to get those PS3 level graphics during a long ride. If not the actual machine itself gets that hot, does it have vents blowing hot air you have to avoid with your hands, or avoid directing at other people while playing?
Also, I question how they could make this sell well if it's even more expensive than the PSP was. Nintendo used to rule the handheld market by creating cheap but reliable hardware using tried-but-not-top-of-the-line components, and I'd think the only way to outsell the 3DS would be to take the chance to release a cheaper handheld now when Nintendo took the unusual route of making an expensive machine, which many people will probably wait to get until it gets a lot cheaper.
The fact that it uses an ARM processor and an OLED screen (both of which are extremely low power components) put my worries to rest about battery life
I barely used my GBA slot on my DS.
I barely used the Xbox BC on the 360.
I barely used the PS1 BC on the PS3.
I don't think I'm alone in this either.
It's a bummer, but the added size isn't worth it, and you can buy plenty of games on psn. Or just use your current psp.
