Despite watching the show when it began and collecting the cards I didn't actually play any of the games until after I had already stopped paying attention to it and the game was recommended to me by a friend. My first game was Sapphire and I started out with Treecko. Despite my love of Charizard, Sceptile always holds a special place in my heart. His False Swipe helped me catch many Pokemon.

Since I got a yellow Gameboy Color with Pokemon Yellow, I didn't have much of a choice. It had to be tha 'Chu.

Think it was Bulbasaur, but I'm not entirely certain.

I got Pokemon back in like 2nd grade or something cause my friend was playing it and I thought it looked fun. He had Red and picked Charmander so naturally I bought Red and picked Charmander. Not my brightest moment as a kid.

Friggin' Charmander

Yellow was my first Pokemon game so stupid Pikachu. Then I went to Silver where I chose Totodile. Went back to Red and chose Bulbasaur. Then Torchic, then Turtwig, then Tepig, then Fennekin.

Classic Charmander was the coolest.

Sadly for all of us whose first was Yellow, we didn't get to choose :(

I started with two. Umbreon and Espeon from Coliseum. To this day I still have them with me through transferring. Boo-ha.

When he mega evolves he becomes a dragon, sure. Vanilla Charizard is Fire/Flying.

I didn't say he is a dragon type I said he is a dragon. Just like Pikachu is a rat, squirtle is a turtle etc.

Charmander was hands down the coolest, especially because he became Charizard. And you had to beat Brock and Misty first with a fire pokemon so it was real dirty business getting those first few badges.

Charmander from OG red. I didn't know jack shit about the game then, so I ended up leveling him up way past everything else because I liked him/charmeleon/charizard so much. I hit a wall eventually. I think it's probably my favorite starter with squirtle coming in at a solid second. I don't think I ever pick grass starters...

First was Blue, went with Squirtle only because I knew the first gym would be weak to Water. For Y, I also chose Squirtle, I just like the Squirtle line a little more than Charmander or Bulbasaur.

Wow, a lot of original Pokemon players in this thread. Bulbasaur was my first.

Bulbasaur because I was a hipster 7 year old and all my friends had Charmander or Squirtle.

I rolled Squirtle the first time I played Pokemon. Turned out to be a good choice, since he's the only one that ends up WITH FUCKING CANNONS MOUNTED ON HIS BACK!

I always picked Bulbasaur because he was OP for the first two leaders, giving you a little breathing room to train other Poke's, so I never developed any kind of love for Charmander. In retrospect, I guess I was kind of a pussy for taking the easy way out the 20 times I started a new save, but too late to change that now.
