Other M was awful, and it worries me about the future of Metroid

Like many, I was incredibly excited for Metroid Other M after the game was introduced at Nintendo's 2009 E3 press conference. Unfortunately, this excitement slowly turned to doubt, and eventually horror, as the game came closer to release, and more and more details were revealed. By the time the game came out I had decided I had no interest in ever playing Other M, but after reading about that scene (SPOILERS) and watching the video in which the X-Play writer who wrote their Other M review defended their review, claiming the game was sexist and ruined Samus' character, I decided I had to see what all the fuss was about and rented the game from Blockbuster a couple of weekends after it had come out. After learning my Wii needed to be cleaned before I could get the game to work and going to Best Buy to buy the Wii Cleaning Kit (effectively doubling how much I spent on renting Other M), I started the game and immediately hated it.

Customizable controls? What hack was in charge of designing this game?!
Customizable controls? What hack was in charge of designing this game?!
How could Nintendo let a game this bad be released under the Metroid name? The combat required absolutely no skill, allowing you to literally mash on the D-Pad and dodge any attack, and the game aimed shots for you, requiring the player to only be pointed in the general direction of an enemy for their shot to make contact. The controls were terrible, suffering from trying to shove more functions than were found in Super Metroid onto an NES controller, forcing you to move in 3D with a D-Pad (the reason Nintendo gave the Nintendo 64 an analog stick), and not offering an option to use a Classic Controller because according to Metroid series director Yoshio Sakamoto offering alternate control options means "you really are admitting defeat as a game designer". It took Samus, often seen as gaming's first female role model, and made her into an emotional co-dependent basket-case who couldn't do anything of her own free will when her former commander was around. (For more on this, read MenTaLguY's wonderful essay on the implications of Other M as it was presented) Gone was the isolated and moody atmosphere of past titles, instead replaced with constantly being given orders by a man who had no actual authority over Samus. Rather than being focused on exploration, the game just told you where to go, and you headed down countless linear hallways with the occasional big open room that still only had two doors in it. The script sounded like it had been poorly translated, but I'm pretty sure this is just because the script is terrible, and this terribleness is amplified by the uninspired voice acting found in the American release. As a result the numerous, lengthy cutscenes are unbearable, and players aren't even allowed to skip them. This ensures that Other M shares none of the atmosphere that made its predecessors so great. Even the music is lacking, or to be more specific, is flat out missing, with the catchy tunes of past Metroids replaced with ambiance in most sections of the game, a shallow attempt to mask the game's lack of atmosphere by creating an artificial one, quite fitting considering the Bottle Ship's purpose. There wasn't a single salvageable aspect of this game outside of looking good for a Wii game, which doesn't even come close to saving this game from being terrible.

I feel like I should explain now that I don't hate Other M solely because it's different, I hate it because it's poorly executed. The idea of a 3D Metroid that tries to take 2D Metroid's gameplay and move it into a 3D environment is great, but it didn't work out. Prime was actually originally going to be third person like Other M, but Miyamoto suggested to Retro Studios that they make it first person, and it was only after that change that the game really started to work. I love when games do something original, but I'd prefer a game that's more of the same and is good to one that tries something different and fails on every level.

The big thing I hate about Other M on a gameplay level is that it's about combat rather than exploration. Although Metroid Prime eventually told you where to go, it was still very much focused on exploration. Even when it showed you the location of the room you needed to get to it still took exploration to get there. There were plenty of branching paths and big open rooms with multiple routes and you had to figure out how to get through them on your own. It was an incredibly atmospheric game, and just walking through the environments was a thrill. Other M on the other hand never really has anything where you have to figure out your way through a room, and usually boils down to killing all the enemies to unlock a door. I give Metroid Prime a pass on having a lock-on even though I criticize Other M for auto-aim because Prime wasn't focused on combat. Prime was very much about exploring the huge world Retro created and figuring out how to get to your next objective. Even with lock-on Prime took more skill than Other M though because you had to manually dodge enemy attacks rather than just be pressing the D-Pad during an enemy's attack, and counter attack at certain points when facing certain enemies. It didn't take tons of skill, but it wasn't the reason I was playing that game. (Though the boss fights are all very fun and took more skill than picking off random enemies or space pirates) Other M on the other hand boils down to running down straight corridors or through small rooms, defeating all of the enemies, and then walking through a door to go and repeat that process. Combat is a part of Metroid, but it isn't its defining aspect.

Despite all of these flaws, most people saw no problems with the game, and it received good scores from most outlets, the only notable exception being the aforementioned X-Play review. However, sales weren't what Nintendo expected, and the company doesn't know why, implying that they see no problem with the game. This is what worries me. The original Metroid Prime was a fantastic game, and both of its sequels were great games, though I felt 3 started to get away from what I feel Metroid is. I'm not alone in my love of the Prime series, as the games were hugely successful in America and Europe, and Metroid Prime's success made what was previously thought of as a dead series into one of Nintendo's biggest franchises. Unfortunately Japan doesn't feel the same way, as none of the Prime games sold very well in Nintendo's home territory. Other M seemed to be Nintendo's attempt to make Metroid appeal more to Japanese gamers, ditching the Prime series' first person action and minimal cutscenes for a laughably simple character action game and a failed attempt at an emotional story. With Sakamoto in charge (a man who went so far as to say the Metroid Prime games were in a parallel world, or in other words non-canon, simply because he didn't have direct control over them.) and Nintendo seeing no problem with Other M both on a gameplay and story level I could easily see the series continue to head down this overly simplified and story focused path. I, and I'm willing to bet many others, would much rather see the series continue down the path that Metroid Prime started, or a true return to form with a new 2D Metroid in the same vain as Super Metroid. Until that happens, all I can do is pray for a true peace in space...

I liked Other M. I found it a logical way to bring the 2D style Metroid into 3D, so things like autoaiming and that (admittedly weird) dodge mechanic don't bother me. I don't associate Metroid instantly with Metroid Prime - it's not a game about skill, aiming or anything else first person shooter-esque in my book*. I associated Metroid with Super Metroid, and in that regard, I felt Other M was a very successful game. Really, the worst thing about it is that it came AFTER Prime. Which seemed to be the series where a lot of gamers jumped in. And that ended up defining Metroid for them.

I remember Brad, in either a Quick Look or Review here, mentioned it felt like an N64 game? I know what he means - this seems like the game that should've been the first 3D Metroid. It's practically a sidescroller...only it's not. But it's not an immersive, 3D adventure like Metroid Prime. It's a very "inbetween" title, so it is really unfortunate that it came out after Prime. That doesn't mean it's bad though, it just means it's different. You should keep an open mind for things like this. Different, new spinoffs are far more interesting than "annualized" sequels that do nothing more than deliver the same thing with a new coat of paint. Oh, and c'mon man...the "exploration" thing? They've been telling you where to go since Prime and Fusion came out. All "Metroidvania" games do that on their map screens now. You can't single out Other M for that.

The story was pretty bad though. Better than anything else Team Ninja's done, but still pretty awful. Stuck in that weird "melodramatic anime zone" (and not good anime, like Cowboy Bebop or Ergo Proxy. Bad anime, like Bleach or something). Her commanding officer, as both a character and game device, is awful. And of course, Samus' characterization makes no sense. I agree with most criticism leveled at that mess. But the gameplay? I'll defend that to the death sir. It was a fine 2.5D interpretation of what Metroid/Metroid 2/Super Metroid/Metroid Fusion brought to the table.

It just had that weird dodge mechanic.

* - not to mention, Metroid Prime had a lock on! All of them have lock-ons. Why do you have a problem with Other M "aiming shots for you" then?

I have a feeling Retro is going to be put back on the Metroid franchise for the Wii U.  They have shown Nintendo that they can make great games and the Prime trilogy was well done and critically popular (though only Prime 1 only sold well).

Other M does have me concerned for the future of Metroid. I really just wish they would make Prime 4, because ever since Fusion, Nintendo has proven time and time again, that they don't have a clue about what to do with the franchise without Retro's help.

The problem with Other M was that they tried to appeal to Japanese sensibilities but the thing is the Japanese aren't big into Metroid and never will be.  Of all the Nintendo franchises Metroid is really popular every where but Japan.   It was big mistake to go from Retro Games an American company to Team Ninja who are possible the most misogynistic developers in existence to handle the story of a strong female character who spends the majority of the games by herself relying only on her wits and skills to survive.
I'll be honest I liked the gameplay but the story ruined the experience.

@vinsanityv22: You bring up some good points, so I'll try to counter them as best I can. I'll be talking about the first Prime primarily, as it was the best and the only one I feel strongly about.

I don't hate Other M because it's different, I hate it because it's poorly executed. The idea of a 3D Metroid that tries to take 2D Metroids' gameplay and move it into a 3D environment is great, but it didn't work out. Prime was actually originally going to be third person like Other M, but Miyamoto suggested to Retro Studios that they make it first person, and it was only after that change that the game really started to work. I don't like annualized sequels either (the Prime games weren't actually yearly, but I understand your point), but I'd prefer a game that's more of the same than one that tries something different and fails on every level.

Prime did tell you where to go, but only if you hadn't figured it out on your own after long enough, and you could turn that feature off. Even then though it just gave you a direction to go in, and getting there still took exploration. There were plenty of branching paths and big open rooms with multiple routes and you had to figure out how to get through them on your own. Other M on the other hand never really has anything where you have to figure out your way through a room, and usually boils down to killing all the enemies to unlock a door. You're almost always just running down straight corridors or small rooms, defeating all of the enemies, and then walking through a door to repeat that process.

The reason I give Prime a pass on having a lock-on while criticizing Other M for auto-aim is that Prime wasn't focused on combat. Metroid Prime was very much about exploring the huge world Retro created and figuring out how to get to your next objective. Even when you were in combat though, you had to try a lot harder than you do in Other M because you had to manually dodge enemy attacks, and counter attack at certain points when facing certain enemies. It didn't take tons of skill, but it wasn't the reason I was playing that game. (Though the boss fights are all very fun and took more skill than picking off random enemies or space pirates)

I'm gonna work this into my blog post because I felt like I hadn't elaborated on why I think Prime works better. Thanks for challenging me on these points, I felt like the blog was missing something but couldn't wrap my mind around what for some reason.

Other M being awful ensured that another Prime game would be down the road. So that's cool.

This game is fucking terrible, how did Nntendo let this out the door. I can't believe people actually defend this shit. Even ignoring Samus as a character, what the fuck was that? What the fuck was that? It's like some mediocre anime.

Other M is a lesson developers need to learn from. Much of a character's personality that we, as players, connect with is performative. A lot of it comes through actions, and smaller notes, rather than sweeping monologues about their back-story. A character is built through a ton of different ways.

And for the love of god, don't give your beloved female character to the guys known for breast physics.

I never played Metroid: Other M and the reason for me is it just doesn't look appealing. Samus Aran has that stupid short haircut and shitty teenage attitude putting her thumbs down during one of those trailer cutscenes (my eyes instantly rolled). Game is too Japanese-ee (not a real word), a style Team Ninja probably sticks to but you can tell it wan't appealing to the western market but the Japanese. Also read ups leading up to the game's release didn't sell me the game, having to stand still to shoot just seems like a bad choice. Hopefully the next Metroid game either is a 2D side scroller for the 3DS or a dual analogue shooter for the Wii U.

@Wraith1: Yeah, it was actually written by Yoshio Sakamoto, series co-creator and director of every Metroid game aside from the Primes and Metroid 2. Apparently Samus as seen in Other M is the way he's always pictured the character. He's also a really creepy guy, and once said he was the only person in the world who knew the location of Samus' beauty mark. (Other M is the first game to feature it, located on one of her cheeks)

This game is fucking terrible, how did Nntendo let this out the door. I can't believe people actually defend this shit. Even ignoring Samus as a character, what the fuck was that? What the fuck was that? It's like some mediocre anime.
You don't want Hal to see this. He loves mediocre anime. Likes to call it "characterization".

I'm honestly surprised Halilnel hasn't arrived yet to show you people the error of your ways. You say "Emotional co-dependent basket case", He says "Strong, nuanced character with emotional depth". I'm not going to make any comments on the quality of the game itself, but it was never something that interested me.

I made a bunch of tweaks and additions to the blog, and now I'm pretty much happy with it. Probably should've gotten everything settled before posting it, but oh well.

I'm split about Other M.

Unlike most people, i liked the gameplay in the game. I can see that other people may not like it though.  They only did one thing wrong with the game, and that was Samus character and by extension large parts of the story. It bugged me a lot.
But i liked the game overall, great graphics, the enemies where fun. It felt like a Metroid game when you where playing, not while watching the cutscenes.

I liked Other M but I see your points, I didn't like it for a Metroid game and I hope this isn't the future but I liked it as a game.

I fucking loved it.

But then again, I love all sort of weird things.
It was far from awful tho, if you can really claim this game 'awful' you have not played enough bad games lately.

@TaliciaDragonsong: I generally avoid playing bad games, so probably. Other games being worse doesn't excuse it from being bad though. The game works and isn't glitchy or anything, but the combat system is bad and combat is pretty much the entire game.

@Taku128
Combat is easy, while boss fights were very intense and cool.

Could be what your own expectations and previous experiences are tho, I went into this game expecting a great experience as Nintendo franchises always deliver me, I wasn't disappointed.
I see Samus as a kick ass bounty hunter, and the combat made that believable, it was fun, intense and action packed.
It reminded me of Ninja Gaiden, only without the constant being murdered factor.

Still, enjoyed it immensely, totally worth my money and time.

You do realize I can read what you're saying and don't really give a shit what half of Giant Bomb thinks of me, right? Without restating my lengthy opinions on the game for the hojillionth time, I'll just say, yes, I love every moment of that game. I love it unapologetically and unironically. Glitches in the manner of its story telling aside, the game is, in essence, everything I ever wanted from a Metroid game.

Beyond that, I'm not sure how much I should say, because I know that my mere presence posting in this thread will cause ryanwho to start whining about my tastes and how I'm a retard for liking this game that is so obviously bad despite getting fairly decent reviews, including four stars from Brad. But let me leave off with a link to my own user review, if it has any chance of shutting some people up. (Though it probably won't.)

Other M was great. It took a while to get used to, but after a couple of hours, the control was second nature for me. Same with Samus' cutscenes. I thought they where cheesy at first, but halfway through the game I couldn't wait for the next one. The ending was excellent, and having an extra quest afterwards with additional cutscenes and a boss was awesome. Haters are going to hate. Oh well.

I wish all of these spoiled children could live in the era where a game of this quality was released once every five years. If you didn't like Other M, that's fine. Calling it something that Nintendo should be ashamed of really shows a lack of knowledge. It was a bold and innovative step.

Can no one in this thread read? No one said that over half of Giant Bomb hates you Halinel. Vortexus said half of giantbomb hates Ryanwho. No one said anything regarding how half of giantbomb feels about you.

And I didn't call you a lady. I was referencing a video. Just in case you were also confused by that, since my simple little joke seemed to cause so many people to be affected so negatively.

The quality of a video game is still an opinion, no matter how many reviewers gave it a good score. I don't think any less of you or anyone else for enjoying this game, but I personally hated it, don't care how many reviewers liked it, and don't want Nintendo to continue taking the series down that path. Just wanted to put together a blog explaining why I didn't like it and don't want the series to continue on this way.

What exactly about this game was bold or innovative though? It was basically Ninja Gaiden mixed with Metroid Fusion.

It's fine if you don't like it, but like LordelX said, it's overstepping to say that it's something that Nintendo should be ashamed of.

And while the game might not necessarily be "innovative," (that's a word that gets thrown about too readily at times), it did represent an experimental new approach to Metroid gameplay that blended traditional Metroid shooting and exploration with other elements. It is also a rarity among Nintendo titles in its use such elements as full voice acting. Metroid is one of Nintendo's biggest franchises beind Mario and Zelda, and Other M is the only game in the series that has used voice acting to the extent that it has. True, this is largely in part because Nintendo didn't do the majority of the grunt work on the game development, but the game does things that people have essentially been begging for Nintendo to do in games like the Zelda series for years.

I don't think I said they should be ashamed, I was more questioning why they could let a big game like Metroid ship with what I feel are very big flaws. At its core Other M was a good idea, a game that takes the 2D Metroid gameplay and tries to translate it into a 3D environment. However, the easiness of the combat and lack of exploration killed the game for me. Other M had the potential to be a game we both enjoyed, but some major issues for me personally are what got in the way of my enjoyment, and these issues go against what I feel is Metroid, which is why I can't believe Nintendo would release it.

Regardless of what you thought about the game, Nintendo took a big risk with Other M. One of the criticisms Nintendo usually receives with its franchises is that they stick to the same formula. "Pokemon games haven't really evolved over the years", "Twilight Princess was an awful lot like Ocarina of Time", and the list goes on. I liked the Prime series, but after the third game I wanted to see them try something different with the Metroid series.

A company still needs to keep the core of what makes that franchise though, otherwise they might as well just start a new IP. Metroid Prime did something new while still keeping the core of Metroid, and I expected Other M to do the same.

@Taku128: Metroid was never about difficult combat. Remember those cooridors in Super Metroid filled with nothing but cannon fodder? And enemies that might have been difficult were rendered harmless by weapon upgrades. The challenge was in the exploration and the boss fights, not in the general combat. I found Other M's difficulty to be on par with games like Super and Zero Mission. And the lack of exploration was nothing new, either, as the type of guided exploration that the game employs was first used in Fusion.

They can fix the flaws in another Other M and if enough people liked it they probably would at least try.  But I'm not Nintendo.
