Oh, forgot to mention this, as well. Since there was talk last night about people wanting the Chie car design unlocked, I gifted the design to a bunch of Giant Bomb users on my friends list (and a copy of the full-fledged car to both mattjam and Pax as a thank you). If you didn't get it, or otherwise want me to send you a copy, fire off an Xbox Live friend request and/or a message in my direction and I'll send it your way.

My summary for this glorious night of Private Race Night goodness:

  • mattjam3000 stomps us all at Laguna Seca
  • Everyone loves hitting FlipperDesert's Asuka Langley-laden fenders at Tsukuba
  • Range Rovers on the downhill section of Fujimi Kaido are a terrible idea. ...a terribly good idea, that is!
  • Having toe in/out is a terrible idea for F200 rallies. Lots of old Corvettes, however, are not.
  • The parking lot area of that Benchmark High Speed Ring track is awesome for smash-up racing

With that said, I give you a selection of pictures!

While I didn't take a video of the F200 rally (yet), I do have this little bundle of joy from our smashing fun.

Hope everyone had fun -- I know I did. Now I've got to pour through all the North America replays and find similar bundles of joy...

@Renahzor: Funny you mention spec Miatas. I saw a build for a spec Miata racing class on another site that got really specific trying to transcribe SCCA regulations into the Forza world, putting Miatas at PI D296 after all the adjustments. It seems to be pretty entertaining to them, so I could shamelessly steal those specs and toss them up here when I get a chance -- it'd at least give me an excuse to buy a Miata in-game and try it out for myself.

F200 rally in general is also a fun event that I wholeheartedly recommend for any racing night. It was great fun last Monday with just four of us.

" I regularly play Live For Speed, arguably one of the most realistic sims in existence. "

Funny enough, Live For Speed and the various communities it has associated itself with over time are the very basis of my opinion regarding sim racers. LFS is a great game, and I enjoyed its multiplayer for quite a while before my pedals broke down a few years back. However, if you gave me the option to hop onto an S2 server and race with a bunch of hardcore folk, or jump onto a demo rallycross server with some casual people, I'd choose the latter every time. I certainly don't miss having to willingly give up positions without a fight because I grew tired of getting run over in turns or otherwise infuriating someone by trying to defend or fight for position. At least I can battle for position alongside more laid-back players in Forza 3 and not worry about extreme anger or disputes if we happen to bump into one another.

I will grant you the bit about less fanboys/trolls and more intelligence in sim racing communities, though. That's a standard more communities should strive to attain.

" In Live For Speed though, the cockpit view is FAR more immersive than the other views. Having 3 screens infront of you, with the in-game steering wheel disabled and your steering wheel sitting in place of it.... very immersive/realistic. "
Immersive, sure. Realistic, only in appearance. I always chose the view in Live For Speed where the car wasn't visible but the tires were, since one of the sensations you lose in a game is the feeling of where the tires and the boundaries of your car are, along with a bunch of other seat-of-the-pants sensations. If I had experience inside a specific car where I was already familiar with the sensations and positioning of everything in real life, cockpit mode would be more than fine. Since that's definitely not me, I'd much rather take function over immersion, and use the view that best gives me the feeling of my car's position (in my case, typically bumper or roof cams).

As for three monitor setups, be it 360 or PC, that still falls in the realm of "more money than sense" in my book, alongside those pricey racing seat setups.

" Ya gotta remember though, these guys are primarily PC "simmers" and generally play games full sim style, clutch'n'all. [...] Also i'd have to imagine they would look at the analog stick as more of a handicap assist, much like traction control or automatic transmission. Like i've said, PC simmers are fanatical people so to answer you're question, yes, simmers care more about the full experience [...] but they generally play with other simmers and that's where they find their own brand of competition. "
Seconding this, since I've seen it firsthand as well.

You're talking about a community that plays and mostly prefers games that extend no benefits or assists to players playing with keyboards or joysticks other than wheels. They call games like Gran Turismo and Forza 'arcade' racers, since the physics and controls (and assists! Heavens!) are more forgiving than their favorite racer. I'm overgeneralizing a bit, and I'll admit I'm biased because of things I've seen and experienced within sim racing communities in the past, but the truly hardcore sim racers you'll find in the PC community are a humorless, depressing lot that find fun in taking things way too seriously.

As for me, I'd use a wheel if I had a setup where I could securely attach and comfortably use one. I think fancier wheels with huge ranges of steering are exactly as Branthog describes, but a simpler 200 or so degrees of steering range makes wheels slightly easier for turning moderation than the tiny stick on a controller. Same with the pedals -- a fancy setup with a clutch pedal seems frivolous when you have no physical feedback/sensation, but a simple set of pedals allows a little more precision in the acceleration and braking input. Would a wheel make me definitively better than a good controller user, though? Probably not.

And don't get me started on the so-called "realism" of cockpit mode...I have my own views there.

@DJ_Lae: Holy crap, that's some beautiful work on the background there. Definitely take your time trying to recreate Ryan/Vinny/Jeff/Brad -- if you can pull them off successfully (which would be more than I could ever hope to accomplish in this editor), the paintjob would be beyond epic.

Sure, I'll join if this gets rolling. As a yank, I think I'm required to throw my hat in.

So, about those pictures and videos I promised...let's see if I can post them without creating a problem.

Well! That seems to work all right. How about a few videos, as well?

I'll just link that one in here, and drop links for the much shorter clips of the Minivan War right here: Part 1 and Part 2.

All in all, a pretty cool night of racing and chaos. If anyone wants to view the full F200 race in-game, the replay's in my storefront, tagged with 'GBDC'.

I recall seeing some of your stuff pop up when I searched for 'gbdc' earlier, so it probably works either way. I just figure it's easier to drop into the description, since there's a lot more room to type random stuff in there.

" PsEG, you are now obligated by law to put that Chie design on the storefront ASAP. "

It is, actually! You should be able to search with the keyword 'GBDC' and find it under designs. EDIT:Forget what I wrote here -- as of now, it should be absolutely free.

The only caveat is that I used a lot of purchased layer groups (most significantly the Atlus and Persona 4 logo) that I had to remove to be able to sell it. I don't know if you're able to slap graphics on top of the design, or if it's like Forza 2 and you have to wipe the design to edit anything. I also don't know if there's a way to provide unlocked designs to others yet, since I haven't toyed with that.

Rest assured, though -- if it's possible, I'm willing to give out an unlocked version of that Chie design to any Giant Bomb users at a price equal to or better than free. That way, others can slap on the same vinyls I bought or personalize it and make it their own.
