Best of 2014

If there is something I'm going to remember about the year 2014 when I think of video games is definitely re-releases. I replayed alot of games in higher resolution and had alot of fun but since those games aren't new releases in 2014 I won't include them in my list. When you exclude games like Grand Theft Auto V (PS4/XB1), The Last of Us Remastered, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition, Metro Redux and more you realize that there weren't that many great games in the year. But of course there are some great games that I played in the year that make up my list for the year, so enjoy!

  • I absolutely adore the Mario Kart series and for 8 to come out and be my favourite entry in the series is an amazing feat. Nintendo took some bold decisions to change the game and all for the better! Mario Kart 8 is a finely tuned machine and is gameplay wise damn near perfect. The way Nintendo has finally changed the formula back so that the experts will win most races and stopped this nonsense of randomly picking a winner with its over powered items is so rewarding that I literally can't stop playing this game. Some of the tracks in the game are just absolutely amazing, both new entries and also re-imagines of classic tracks, and the music that goes with them is so rememberable. And also how Nintendo is handling DLC for the game is just great, amazing new entries for a low price surely is the way to go. Mario Kart 8 is a great experience however you play it, single player or multiplayer (locally or online), Mario Kart 8 is the best game of 2014 and my most played game in the year, great work Nintendo!

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns was a fantastic entry to the Wii library and revitalized the Donkey Kong series. I was very excited to play Tropical Freeze and was so pleased that Retro Studios decided to go for Donkey Kong instead of Metroid. The game didn't let me down but instead exceeded my expectations. The finely tuned 2D platforming was great to play and how the game dared to be extremely challenging was a huge plus for me. I just loved playing through this great adventure and when I thought I had cleared every challenge in the game to get a 100% completion the game surprised me with Hard Mode which takes an already very difficult 2D platformer and makes it almost unbeatable which is exactly what I wanted! Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a must play for all platforming fans

  • The NES had some of the best games in history with series like Mega Man, Ducktales and Super Mario Bros. Many fans have tried to make a game in the same style but in my experience no one has come close to the magic of the old games (Mega Man 9 and 10 were great but not indie titles). Shovel Knight however changes that, by fusing together different elements from NES classics we have a very difficult but satisfying 8-bit platformer. Like Ducktales you can pogo jump but this time with a shovel, like Zelda II you have an overworld with towns where people have both informative and rubbish to say. The platforming reminds me alot of Mega Man and Ninja Gaiden and the artstyle is alot like Castlevania. However the game has its own humour and manages to be it's own thing despite nearly everything in the game is made from elements from other games. If you haven't played Shovel Knight already you should get it as soon as possible, it's that good!

  • I had very little hopes for Wolfenstein: The New Order after the forgettable Wolfenstein back in 2009. But I decided to give the game a chance and boy am I glad I did. The New Order follows the Wolfenstein formula by playing very loosely with story and facts, now the Nazis have won the WWII and you have to try and bring them down. The game is pretty long, has alot of very memorable characters and is packed with fantasticly built enemies. As always you play as B.J. Blazkowicz but this time the character has depth and you actually get to know him. The story also makes you wonder just how far the Nazis would have gone in their extreme experiences with people if WWII would have planned out differently. If you are like me and prefer single player campaigns in first person shooters then you should play Wolfenstein: The New Order.

  • NES Remix was a breath of fresh air from Nintendo in 2013, how they played with some great NES games both by letting you trying to master a challenge from the original game or by remixing some different elements to make a completely new stage was very fun. NES Remix 2 does little to nothing new outside of having different NES games to offer. There are fewer games to offer this time around but better games overall. I really enjoyed trying to master every challenge and beating other peoples records. The extra game Super Luigi Bros. which is the original Super Mario mirrorized and played by Luigi was surprisingly good and was definitely worth a playthrough. If you enjoy a good challenge and love old NES games you should play NES Remix 1 and 2.

  • The inFamous series was very good on the PS3 and deserved more praise than it got. Sucker Punch clearly wanted to start the franchise again with Second Son which is understandable since Cole wasn't very memorable and its easier to get new fans by starting fresh. Second Son however is definitely a inFamous game, the games protagonist has super powers in an open world. But this time around there is alot more to do and you get more attached to the person you play as and want to see the story through to the end. Controls in the game are very tight and do a good job of keeping you in control of the action, and the action is good. The variety of weapons available is very good although it would have been better to get the last power in the game a bit earlier. I highly recommend Second Son both to previous inFamous players and newcomers to the series, it's a very good 3rd person action game that deserves your attention.

  • The FIFA series has been very good since FIFA 09 and has left Pro Evolution Soccer in the dust. However the series has been playing things a bit too safe for the last couple of years. With FIFA 15 being the first game in the series that could utilize the power of the new systems I had hopes that things would be different this time around. Graphically the game is stunning, for the first time the audience really come alive and the movements of the players is also really impressive. Gameplay wise there are alot of small tweaks and improvements but only hardcore players will notice alot of the changes. FIFA 15 is the best football game available but I really would like to see the next game do more.

  • I'm not the biggest fan of shoot-em-ups but Velocity 2X manages to make this stale formula very fun and interesting by having a warp feature and really push the player to try and beat each stage as fast as possible. There are also 2D platforming sections along the way that really freshen up the experience. I really couldn't stop playing until I had achieved a perfect rating in each mission. The sense of accomplishment when you have truly mastered both the shoot-em-up and the 2D platforming section of the level to perfection was amazing. I really enjoyed Velocity 2X and I can't wait for a sequel

  • Season 1 of Telltale's Walking Dead surprised the gaming industry back in 2012 and was one of the best games released that year. Season 2 is definitely worth playing if you liked the first season but it doesn't really hold up. At times I felt like the game was rushed, both the story and characters just weren't as interesting as in the first entry. Also I have to admit that the ending was a huge dissappointment but maybe my hopes were too high for this game. But nevertheless it's a solid playthrough just keep in mind that the first season is way better. There are some very interesting ideas and playing as Clementine is a breath of fresh air.
